Barcelo Maya
Was very nice resort well kept.
Very large in size and always had an open chair to sit near pool or beach.
Liked the design of main lobby with mall and great style of sports bar.
The night club on resort for adults was lots of fun and had good amount of people .

Everything you need plus more
Barcelo has everything you could want in a resort. You almost don't even need to leave the grounds. They have beautiful pools and beaches of course but additionally Barcelo has a bowling alley, gym, spa, mini golf course, mall and a haunted house. Hence, if by chance it rains there is still plenty to keep one occupied. Every staff member I interacted with was helpful and accommodating. Great place to spend a week or two!!

Wonderful stay
We were very pleasantly surprised by this resort! We travelled with our toddler and our 2.5 months old. It is beautiful well organized and gave us a perfect setting for a relaxing vacation. The possibility to move between the different Barcelo resorts inside is nice and makes it feel really big. Kids' parks and pools are really well thought and the beach is absolutely wonderful! buffets are really great and the waiters go above and beyond. The specialty restaurants are also worthwhile.
We did [... read more]not have the chance but being only 20 min away from Tulum it also gives you some nice outing options.
I would definitely recommend this resort !

Awesome vacation
The resort was kept clean, the food was great and the staff were friendly very happy with our stay! I’d love to go back in the future, the beaches were nice and the free water sports are an excellent bonus, we saw some really cool sea creatures while snorkeling.

Everything you want
This is my second time at this resort. Couldn’t ask for a nicer place. Very clean food is great. Can snorkel right out front of the palace resort is best. I will say one thing to be aware of and not sure if the tripcentral reps would even be aware of. The last few days of our trip a business convention arrived and took over one side of the buffet. This created a line up at the other side. We walked to the next resort over to eat. Overall a great resort something for everyone at the Barcelo Ma[... read more]ya Grand resort.

Good Resort
The Barcelo Maya Resort is a collection of resorts (5 in total) on a large property with lots of amenities, decent rooms, and good food overall. If you get a good deal on the price, it is highly recommended. There are a fair number of a la carte restaurants, most which do not disappoint depending on your preferences. The buffets offer lots of choice and of good quality as well. The restaurants close to the beach are okay, but get a little boring after awhile, since the menu is very repetitiv[... read more]e. There is a decent beach at the south end of the property which is protected from the wind and calmer than the northern end. However, it's quite shallow and still rocky a hundred or so metres from shore. The beach at the north end is much more windy, wavy, and rocky, however, if you like snorkeling, this is the beach to go to, although you may have to swim a relatively far out from the beach to find the reefs. We found it very clean, and the staff very friendly, helpful and courteous. We have been there twice, if that is any testament to the quality of the resort. We stayed in the Maya Caribe, which is probably at the lower end of the scale for the 5 resorts. If we were to go again, we would try to stay in the Maya Tropical or the Maya Colonial, at the northern end; they seem to be a bit more upscale with nicer property. Or the Maya Beach at the extreme southern end which, at the edge of the property, is pretty quiet. We found the Caribe kind of noisy.

Beautiful grounds, tired hotel room and mediocre food!
The Grounds at Barcelo are very well maintained and beautiful. The property is huge with four shared resorts or five if you are staying at the Palace. The rooms in the Caribe building Labra were very tired (unless you were in the row of Premium rooms at the end of the building that had all been renovated). The tile floor grout was black due to its age. The bath tub was all chipped in areas where they attempted to cover it with liquid enamel. I didn’t feel like the room was as clean as it shou[... read more]ld be for that level of resort. Having a balcony was completely useless because all of the balconies have a solid concrete wall surround so when you sat down all you were looking at was a solid concrete balcony wall.
Each property has its own buffet and we tried Beach, Caribe, Traditional and Colonial. There is a different theme each night at the buffet but I found regardless of whether it was Mexican, Spanish or Japanese the food was pretty much the same with a few exceptions. Very disappointed in particular with Mexican theme night as I was expecting a far better attay of Mexican inspired food. The guacamole is all mass produced and not fresh like you would expect being in Mexico.
We paid an extra $40 US to eat at the French restaurant at the Palace and it was not worth it at all. The food was ok. The waiter was fantastic but we were both extremely disappointed with the food.
We went to Xplore on an excursion one day and my 16 year old son said the food at the included buffet there was better than at the resort!
For an inclusive resort they have far too many things that are not included such as bowling, the water park, mini golf, wave rider and also a small little carousel in the Mayan Mall area that they charged to let the kids ride on. So much for all inclusive!
Undecided whether I would return to Barcelo. I would likely try another chain to see if it was better value for the money for an all inclusive.

Great Vacay!
We are just home from one week at this resort and we didn’t want to leave. The resort was fabulous. The rooms were clean and spacious with outside sitting areas. The beaches were amazing and we were always able to find eight chairs for everyone. There are lots of pools and activities. Our four al la cartel restaurants were great too. Kyoto was my favorite. The staff were always friendly and helpful. We all really enjoyed ourselves and ended up not even leaving the resort. We will be back!

Lots to do for everyone
We have been to many All-Inclusive, as well as stayed off resort in Mexico and the Caribbean. This resort by far had the most comprehensive list of items to do, great snorkeling right of the beach, awesome children areas, bowling etc. There are a total of 5 resorts, which you have access to the facilities of 4, although most facilities are a copy of the others (just slightly different set up), it does mean you get a choice of the show at the theater for the night or the specials in the buffets. [... read more]Over the 4 resorts the area is large, however on the resort you are staying it is not that far from room, to beach to lobby/buffet etc and as each resort has everything you don't need to travel far. The food would be the one let down, no one got sick, but it is sub-par come compared to other areas we have stayed (even Cuba).
We would definitely go again - great service, no waiting for drinks, no having to save chairs, great beach

Great Stay
We've been here twice and this resort is fantastic (the whole complex). Food is decent but the beach and ocean are spectacular. You can snorkel right off the beach and see sea turtles, schools of fish, and some big guys too. Only downside is the lack of decent night time entertainment, but its certainly not a deal breaker. Resort is exceptionally clean and well kept. You won't regret coming here.

Very Disappointing!
We could have just as easily gone to Las Vegas. The buildings were all shiny and glitzy. Definitely nice but just not Mexican.
Positves: The food was plentiful. The drinks were good and at some bars they had premium brands. The beach was very nice. The room was comfortable and quiet. We were immediately checked into our room and they put my son and his wife across the hall. Staff was pleasant but not friendly.
Negatives: At check in we were not provided with any information about the r[... read more]esort except a map of the resort. When we entered our room there was an overwhelming odour of must and mold. I called the front desk and asked if they could put a deodorizer in and they sent someone right away. I would have asked for another room but my son had already unpacked and I wanted to be near them. It was better for one day and then the smell was back the next day. I asked for a refresh again and once again they responded immediately however once again it only lasted one day. We decided that since we were not in the room much and it was not hot we would live with it and open windows when we could. WIFI was only available at very limited 2 times during the day and only in a small area of the shopping mall. Not even enough places to sit.
We were given coupons to be used to reserve our meals at some of the special restaurants. We went to the guest services right away the next morning and we were not able to get our meals at any suitable dining times (either 5 pm or 9 pm) too early or too late. Went back a few times to see if there were a cancellation but we were only able to get one at the Mexican one and the Japanese one. At the Mexican one there were many empty chairs (more than 10 and no one came in to fill them. At the Japanese one there are supposed to be 12 chairs around the chef and he puts on a show. The fun in that was to be interacting with the other 8 people in the group but the 4 of us were alone. Once again a disappointing expereince. There was also an unpleasant altercation with our server and my daughter-in-law over the sake she bought for us. Really ruined the evening. So we had to eat all the rest of our meals in the buffet. There was lots of selections but all the food was either luke warm or downright cold. We started to just eat the food that was supposed to be cold. There was only 2 places to eat - the main buffet or the lunch only beach buffet. Very limited selection and once again COLD. I started to live on soup. There was another place called the Sports bar. It was mainly appetizers and snacks. It was a sports bar (surprise) and very noisy. There was no place to get a late night snack or drink because everything closed early (11 pm.) The beach chairs were plentiful and the sand was lovely however I was not expecting so many stones and rocks to get into the water. Water was clear and lots of fish swimming around. The water sports were too far away up the beach and mainly snorkeling. If there were any activities during the day we were not aware of them because we were not informed of anything. There was a main stage in the lobby of the outdoor shopping mall. They lasted about an hour and it was a surprise every day. They just set up folding chairs in the open hall. However the weather was very cold for 3 days and I had no winter clothes so sitting outside stopped many folks. We were thinking it would be fun to have so many activities available but everything cost extra. All in all a very disappointing week. Even if we had paid less it still would have been a failure but for the price we paid even a worse experience. We will continue to go to Mexico but certainly not this one!

Barcelo Maya Caribe
The hotels grounds are beautiful. The 4 resorts, Beach, Caribe, Colonial and Tropical are all within easy walking distance of each other. Fifty percent of the staff are friendly in that you were greeted with a hello as you walked by. The pools are great. The kids play structures are second to none. Awesome! The food is good, but often repetitive. Guest services are very helpful. The free WiFi is terrible. It is available for 3 hours per day and you have to go to the mall area to access it. If yo[... read more]u want WiFi access, I suggest buying the package for the week, about $40. Otherwise, it's $9/day. Our check in was a disaster. It was further complicated by the fact that the desk clerk did not speak English very well. We have been to other similar resorts in the area, and our overall experience was much more satisfying.

Large Resort
The resort was large not much to do. All the advertised activities are at an additional fee. The resort does not accept cash anywhere not even at the stores/shops.
The food is a serious disappointment. The food is holding this hotel back from a fourth or even fifth star. I would not return.

Amazing resort
No complaints. This was an amazing resort. There's so much to do, swimming, in pools or at the beach, working out at the gym, playing basketball, mini putting, bowling, there's clubs for the nightlife, there's a sports bar to watch games, and soooo many drinks. I had a great time. The trip was too short. I look at forward to coming back.

Excellent Resort!
Excellent resort ......if it weren't for the Dolphinarium. Very very sad that such a large resort chain refuses to become a World Class Leader in the tourism industry by not only going to great lengths to protect green sea turtles but also dolphins. Instead of a dolphinarium which continues the degradation in human intelligence in terms of environmentalism and the protection of animal species, why not provide demonstrations/shows teaching the Barcelo patrons about the land and aquatic species in[... read more] its' surrounding areas? The world is starting to take notice and become aware just look at the huge drop in attendance at SeaWorld thanks in part to the movie Blackfish. Its disgusting to see people waiting their turn to swim with a dolphin, the dolphins being forced daily to perform and behave in tremendously small pools. At the end of each day you will find all the dolphins lined up with their noses resting of the pool's edge facing the ocean which is only metres away. So very sad. Upon reading the Barcelo's in room informational booklet the espousing of how they are protecting the environment by only washing the sheets every third day. Really?! Dismantle the futile Dolphinariums, and watch the Barcelo resorts really stand out as World Class Leaders in the travel and tourism industry.....
The above makes me so angry but I also very much need to mention about the dive company Dressels that is on site here. My husband and I have been to other Dressels many times before and each time we dove with them they have been wonderful but I have to impress upon you that this Dressels location is THE best one! The entire crew there, everyone from the managers to the equipment guys all are top notch! Our 11 year old son just completed his open water PADI certification there and WOW we/he treated like royalty and we felt like we were a part of a family. Nina was our son's dive instructor. She THE best dive instructor we've ever come across (my husband and I both have our advanced open water and have more than 10 years dive experience at many dive sites including Roatan, Cozumel, Cayman Brac, entire Yucatan peninsula and soon Curacao). Nina was extremely professional and knowledgeable and really related to kids well. We hope to one day be able to dive with her again! This Dressels was absolutely perfect for those wishing to get their open water certification - highly recommend! Even the building itself was very clean, open, huge cleaning tanks, boats very clean, boat crew amazing etc. etc.
So the resort itself now. Its massive. There is an enclosed 'mall' to walk through with various touristy shops with a very small casino and a haunted house (?) which was weird. Your all inclusivity doesn't go very far as everything fun is extra $$$. The bowling alley, awesome, costs $15 per game for instance. Want to play pool? Ya that's also $15 per game. Don't even know what the haunted house cost. The only extra thing that we did was the Flowrider which my surfer/snowboarder husband and son wanted to try...and loved. That was $15 for an hour. We did not go on any outside excursions as we had gone before and again, all of these 'tours' are very Disney'esque' and very over-priced. The food everywhere we tried amongst all 3 hotels was amazing. So much food!! Our 4 a la cartes were: Spanish, Japanese, Seafood, Steak house. The only one that was just okay was the Spanish one but ALL were excellent!! Our favourite was the Japanese with the Tepanaki show. The rooms were okay, nothing fancy but clean and adequate (room fridge always fully stocked). We stayed in the Sahil section of the Caribe hotel. This was a perfect location because of its central location to everything and proximity to the dive shop which was our primary focus on this trip. Have to also mention the service and staff at this resort were all excellent; very friendly and very hard working. Would we go back? No. Never again will we stay at a place with a Dolphinarium which is extremely unfortunate because of how much we loved diving with this Dressels location.
