Spent 7 relaxing days at this beautiful resort. The staff were amazing, food was great, rooms were clean! Beautiful beach walks every morning. Definitely recommended. Hoping to return before it turns into a family resort :)

Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada: Beautiful grounds, great staff, still suffering post- pandemic.
We spent three weeks between November 22- December 13 and enjoyed the vacation. The staff is wonderful and extremely helpful. Rooms are clean and quire well equipped. The renovated showers do lack pressure but we never wanted for hot water. Food was good and varied in the buffet. The a la cartes were satisfactory but we returned to the Japanese only once with friends. The resort was not crowded except on weekends when local residents were there. Plenty of loungers on the beach. Pool area was alw[... read more]ays active and plenty to do. Our only complaint was the inconsistency of drinks at the bars. No two bartenders shared drink recipes and regular brands were either not available at every bar each day or were substituted with local brands.

Iberostar Waves Costa Dorada: Plenty of shade!
This resort is absolutely the best resort we have ever been to for the availibility of shade. There are plenty of loungers to be found in the shade at the pool and also at the beach. There are also spots between the beach and pool offering plenty of shade for anyone who needs to limit the amount of sun they get. Also plenty of sun spots for the people who love the sun.
Our room was old and kind of run down however kept clean. It did not matter to us as we are not there to be in our room much w[... read more]ith such a nice beach anyway.
The food was a little repetitive off the main buffet but was edible none the less with nobody going hungry and if you did it was your own fault.
The grounds are well kept with plenty of trees and walkways and all the time you are on the grounds you get a beautiful view of either the mountain or the beach....what more could you ask for!
We spent a majority of our time lazing in the shade on the beach enjoying the cold drinks and cool breezes off the water. The beach is nice and sandy with only a bit of seaweed washing up that is quickly picked up.
Just a small sidenote.... one of our fav drinks to enjoy is the long island ice tea. Anyone who likes them knows that there is a wide variety of how they are made however we have finally found the right bartender to make them at this resort. Elvis will make you the perfect ice tea that tastes delightful and you will never know it has booze in it hardly. Be careful though as they are packed with booze lol
This is a good resort at a good price with lots to enjoy. Many people come on here and complain about resorts not matching the flashy 5 star resorts they have been in other locations but then also paid 3 times the price for them so lets be fair. We have been in the travelling game for awhile now and this resort is on our list of resorts e would return to.

VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort: Great Price, Great People, Great Fun!
Our experience at VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort was great! We arrived November 28th and stayed for a week. This was our first time to this resort and was very pleased.
We found the rooms, resort and beach exceptionally clean, the food was good and there was always plenty.
The resort is compact and easy to get around. There is a nice pool, super comfy lounge seating around the bar and a swim up bar. At the beach, there is a bar area that's covered and provided shelter from the occasion ra[... read more]in, and a restaurant at the waters edge where we found fries, wings, hamburgers, pizza, hot dogs, soup, chili and nachos and a salad bar. We booked dinners at all three A-la-cart restaurants. We had beef tenderloin, glazed ribs, mango chicken breasts, fish dishes, caesar salad, pumpkin soup, etc. All of it was very tasty.
We did not opt for the VIP added expense and found everything we needed. Those that did, mentioned that the VIP lounge was nice, but you could not leave that area with your brand named alcoholic beverages. There are plenty of loungers, and those with VIP did have drinks served to them and had day beds on the beach, but other than that, it was hard to justify the added expense.
If you're looking for night life and evening entertainment this is not your resort.
For the price, we were exceptionally pleased with our choice.

Sunscape Puerto Plata: Disappointed with Resort
The grounds are well landscaped and taken care of but so are many of the resorts. Room was very clean but dated and housekeeping was great.
Food was disappointing. Too much by way of their local dishes. For instance bacon was never out at the buffet. If you asked for it they would personally bring you some from the kitchen. They could have had more wait staff on hand as service was slow in getting a coffee, drinks etc. Disastrous experience at al carte restaurant (Gohan). Waited for over[... read more] an hour to just get 1 course of a 5 course meal. Ended up leaving and found out later guests did the same and not only at this restaurant but other al cartels as well. It would have been good if they had activities on the go, ie beach volleyball, bingo etc. but nothing.

VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort: Really nice small resort!
We just returned from a week at the Gran Ventana. This was our 3rd time there and there were no surprises. Those 1-star reviews that are posted are ridiculous. These people must have stayed at another resort. Very friendly staff and check-in was quick. A la cartes were very nice. The food at the buffet was not exceptional but it was very good. Lots of variety. It was very busy but you could find a lounger at the beach any time of the day. There were special events for the return guests and there[... read more] were a lot of return guests. That speaks for itself. Everything is very close by. VERY clean everywhere. We had some very small issues with the room and they were fixed in minutes. There is a small shopping mall, a 5-minute walk from the resort. Free WIFI in the room and in the lobby. This resort is a good value for your money. Would definitely come back again.

Sunscape Puerto Plata: We had a Great Time!
We recently got back from a two week stay (Nov 14- 28th) at Sunscape. My first impression on entering the Sun Club for registration was not great, building looks very old. We were registered fast and very friendly, then taken by a little cart to our room. Our room was lovely, great location, ground floor, terrace, and super clean! The grounds are gorgeous, the buildings are older but you can see they are doing all they can to dress them up. They were starting to paint the one pool when we [... read more]left. We thought the food was great! Lots to choose from , and varied every day. Perfect size resort. The drinks in the Sun club part were awesome, the other bars were okay as well. The biggest thing I would like to say was that everyone who worked there was so friendly, I mean genuine, not fake friendly. We have stayed in the DR many times, mostly Punta Cana, and five star, and the people they have hired make the resort one of the best. It was one of our better vacations, and Air Transat was good as well. Entertainment was not really very good, not much to do that way. The beach was beautiful. We would stay again.

Casa Marina Sosua Trademark by Wyndham All Inclusive: Casa Marina
It is an older resort but the rooms were good and the ammenities were great. On the weekends the resort was packed with locals which they put xtra police and lifeguard on to control the noisy Dominicans. It was a challenge with the number of people there, but they handled it pretty well. During the week the resort was great, less noise, less people, always a seat at the pool and the beach. The weather the second week had rain every night and sometimes during the day. Everything on the resort was[... read more] laid out in a way that you didn't have to walk far and there was enough pools to for everyone to be spread out which was great.

Casa Marina Reef Resort: Great Value for Money
Just came back from 12 days staying on in a Garden view room on the Reef side of the resort. This resort is about 75% renovated, with most of the first two buildings (rooms starting with a 2) not having been updated yet. Our room was not updated, but it was clean and the king bed was very comfortable.
The resort is very large, and the terrain is a bit rough with stone pathways that are uneven. Walking in flipflops on the stone was hard on my back personally. But I found that avoiding the stone[... read more] pathways and taking short cuts through the other newer buildings when on my way to the buffet or beach helped a lot.
Housekeeping was wonderful, but there was sometimes a shortage of towels. They would all be in the laundry and we ended up without a bathmat or a hand towel a few times. But fresh pool towels were always available, unlike some other resorts we have stayed at.
FOOD: Unless you are on the Select side of this resort there is not always food available. We found that the paperwork that the front desk gave us did not have the correct times for when the buffet was open. So if you want food on demand you might want to book Select. Buffet food was good. You will always find something good to eat, even if the selection isn't huge. If you are a coffee snob, book Select. We were surprised to see that at the buffet they made big pots of instant coffee and it was very bad. Considering the DR is famous for it's coffee this was disappointing. There was a coffee machine at the first beach bar but it was broken the whole time we were there. I really hope they fix this and upgrade the coffee in general. They can't be saving that much money using instant. There were two a-la-carte's available, Mexican and Italian. We had Italian twice and Mexican once and they were both very good.
Staff were mostly very nice. There were of course a few rock stars, and a few we preferred to avoid. The bar staff are great and try to be fair and serve people in order. The wait staff at the buffet had a strange system where one person seats you, another will set your cutlery place setting, then another pours your water, and another asks if you want anything to drink, then a different person clears your plates. So this ends up making for a very impersonal experience and at times we felt quite overlooked (no one would come ask for our drink order throughout the entire dinner) and this I think reduces their opportunities for getting better tips as it made it hard to get to know staff. Even in the a-la-carte's they mostly operated like this. We have had much better service at other resorts? But the staff is working very hard, I think it is just how they are trained and how the management operates the place. I think this could use improvement. If they had smaller sections and smaller "crews" in each section they could pay more attention to their tables.
WIFI is crappy. Don't get it. Walk a block away to a Claro (big red sign) or an Altice (blue signage) store. Those are the two main phone companies and they will sell you a SIM card for 100 pesos (about $2US) and a data plan for the duration of your stay. We bought a $6 package that gave us 10Gb of data for 14 days and we had service wherever we went all over resort and off. Then you can communicate with people back home over any app like messenger or whatsapp etc. Whereas wifi is $25USD per device per week and you have to be in a few specific locations to get it to work. There were packages for $3 so if you are there for a week you'd pay $5 instead of $25 and get to use maps and other apps while you are off resort.
Other pro tips. If you are on Reef side and like going out for breakfast. Walk down the stairs to the public beach, take three steps around the corner of the rock wall and then go up the stairs to the Waterfront restaurant. There you can get the best service, bacon eggs toast hash-browns and amazing coffee for around $3-$5 and its so nice there, and relaxing and the view is just amazing. Great for a treat day and cool photo op spot. They have a full menu of other stuff too.
Jolly Rogers bar is a fun spot to check out in the evening between dinner and disco time. They are about 3.5 blocks away and they have special events like Karaoke and Bingo and its just a really fun vibe. Great staff and inexpensive food and drinks. Free wifi, just ask your waitress for the password. Great chicken wings! There is a small Playero store 3 blocks away from the resort that is a small grocery store to pick up snacks etc. And there is a Pharmacy right beside it that has vitamins, drugs and other stuff. And we found another grocery store a bit further where we bought coffee to bring home for much cheaper called Super Pola. It was around 10 blocks to walk there. There is a huge Playero (it's like a Walmart) on the highway as you drive in on the bus to the hotel, but it is really expensive. You can find things cheaper almost anywhere else.
Casa Marina was perfect for what we needed. An inexpensive getaway in the sun. I hear the Select side is very nice, so if you prefer five star make sure to book over there. We called ourselves "genpop" and poked a bit of fun at our friends who were staying on the other side because we were not allowed over there. But we all mixed on the beach and at the lobby bar at night. Good times. Made some great friends. We would most definitely return.

Emotions by Hodelpa Puerto Plata: Very nice resort
The resort was good, grounds clean, beach nice just too much people trying to sell you stuff everyday! Food was ok for the most part. The Lunch and dinner buffet was pretty ok, they only had chicken on Sundays which kinda sucks. Breakfast was underwhelming like they had the same breakfast items every single day no change at all . They only had coke and 7up as soda options

Senator Puerto Plata Hotel: Great value for $
Solid 4 star hotel. Restaurants were delicious especially steakhouse and Italian and so were dishes at 2 snack bars. Pizza Pup also yummy. Standard room dated but clean, lots of hot water and everything worked. Staff very hard working with much thanks to Felicia who booked all our dinners. Beach was windy with rocks so bring water shoes. No fish to see. Biggest complaint bars should have cocktail and drink menu. Overall very enjoyable vacation.
