I’ve been to varadero before, and hands down, you will not find a quality resort like this for the price. Food is the same everyday but thankfully you’re downtown! Lots of restaurants to choose from if you are bored with the food. Cleanest beach out of all the beaches! Great amazing staff- I’ll be coming back for sure.

Grand Aston Varadero Beach Resort: Nice new resort with lots to improve
The rooms nice and comfortable.
Typical food and beverage shortages, lots of cross contamination at buffet and vegetarian section full of meat dishes.
Check in was a disaster front desk doesn't speak English well. Was told to check in at 4, absolute chaos, staff would show room keys one by one to each guest, a patron decided to take the stack and call names. Our room was not ready till 5:30 and noone explained where the room was or offered to help. Go figure room 3518 is on the 5th floor.
Bu[... read more]ffet tables never cleaned, had to clean our own tables and find staff to bring cutlery and clean glasses. Dine early to avoid the chaos.
Could not make reservations at the a la cartes as they were full for the next 2 days and it was only a 4 day trip so missed that.

Melia Internacional: Great resort
We love our stay in this hotel, very big, elegant, nice room (only some issues with the drawers), nice staff, very close to the beach, nice pool, buffet was fine, I was expected less variety, but I was satisfied. I will recommend to my friends, and I would like to come back to stay more time in the hotel and take advantage of the different activities that they offer :) Thank you so much!

Roc Barlovento: Roc Barlovento
I've been to this resort about 6 times before but not in about 5/6 years. I was so disappointed it dropped in quality so much. Meat just seemed to be just fat and bones. Bars had only rum or beer, restaurants only wine mostly red. The staff was great resort was kept clean, you must love cats as there are many many cats , I love cats. Don't change your money to pesos they want Canadian, American or Euro's. I will not be going back!!

Iberostar Origin Laguna Azul: Would not stay here again
We just arrived back from this Resort last night. It is definity not a 5* more like a 2*. We love Cuba and its people. We were totally open minded regarding meals as food is rationed out amongst all the resorts with 5* getting best first and goes down the chain to lower star ratings. We stayed one week and when we checked into our room the mini fridge was empty. Went to front desk twice to have some sent to our room with no success. No pop either. For a resort this large, none of the elevators w[... read more]ere working. If you have small children or seniors travelling its a brutal climb. For two people we had one towel all week. We never saw any maids on our 4th floor all week. Most food were weiners cooked 15 different ways. No eggs or bacon the entire week. Lots of beans, sausages and hard biskets. Some fixings to make a salad. Decent desserts and ice cream is delicious. Ran out of coffee most days not to mention it was the same for drink mixes. One bit of advice..tip the staff. We tipped between 1$ to sometimes 3$. Front desk staff give you the impression that they dont want to be there. Restaurant and beach bar staff are amazing. Beach is ok but last week we had to listen to bull dozers digging on the beach for 3 days. Swim up pool/bar was being retiled, that left one pool for every one. We loved all staff except for front desk. Sadly to say that we will not be returning.

Paradisus Varadero: Disappointed
I have travelled to many countries (Europe, China, Mexico,DR, Jamaica and Cuba several times) so my expectations were realistic.
This was the first time that I treated myself to a 5 star resort.
Our trip organiser should have advised us to pay more for "Royal Service" accomodations which I presumed to be worthy of the 5 star rating.
The upkeep/maintenance of the "Jr Suite" assigned to us was more like that of a cheap motel. When we arrived at around 8 pm, the air conditioning was not in wo[... read more]rking order...condensation from the unit dripped from the ceiling and pooled on the bathroom floor...the blower fan made a loud clanging noise when I got it to work. (I recorded this on my iPhone) The heat and humidity in the room throughout the night was unbearable. Guest services said that a mechanic would be right over to repair it... this didn't happen. I tried to reach our tour organiser (Sunwing) but their offices were closed and the WiFi at the resort was not working (no Internet for the duration of our stay) so unable to access their website.
The following morning, attendants at "Reception" said no other rooms were available... When our SunWing rep arrived, I was told that there was nothing they could do and they were busy booking excursions.
At around noon, the air conditioner blower was repaired but this made the dripping from the ceiling even worse.
Finally, Guest Services arranged to move us to another suite. In this suite, the toilet did not flush properly (the tank did not refill unless the cover was removed and the float manually repositioned). Furthermore, the handle on the outside of the patio door was missing and there were no small towels, facecloths or shower mats.
As we were wanting to enjoy our vacation, we did not pursue the matter further.
Most of the pathway lights leading to both suites assigned to us were either broken or missing. This created a hazard because a large hole (3 ft deep) was left uncovered in the lawn and I narrowly missed stepping into it.
So, accommodation was substandard but the beach was beautiful, the workers friendly and the buffet food was good. Only one of the 3 onsite restaurants which we visited served tasty food. In one of them, the grilled fish was so salty as to be inedible.

Barcelo Solymar: ..
My partner, and in-laws just came back from our recent trip to Barcelo Solymar, Varadero Cuba. Let me start by saying our travel agent Jim O'Neil was wonderful, if I had a question he was an email or a phone call away with the answer.
Now- Onto the review of the trip.
We went to Cuba Tuesday January 23rd - Tuesday January 30th 2024.
We arrived at the resort and got checked in in no time. The staff were for the most part friendly at arrival. My partner and I were put into room 1148 and my in-[... read more]laws were put into 1144. We walked into the room to our surprise the rooms were AWFUL. The sheets looked like they were just remade from the last vacationers, someone else's hair was on the pillows, the sheets were covered in stains, the floor looked disgusting. I walked into the bathroom to check that area out - all around the shower was covered in black mold, and inside the shower looked absolutely disgusting. Our safe didn't work, and the light's didn't turn on. I checked on my in-laws and their room wasn't to far off from ours. So of course I went to the front counter and complained about how the room was. Now- I am fully understanding I am going to another country that does not have the luxuries we do, so I wasn't expecting perfect, but I was expecting the sheets to be freshly cleaned at least.. After complaining about the room- My in-laws, partner and myself were upgraded to a private villa suite closer to the ocean, which turned out to be beautiful. I was very happy they accommodated us to be together.
So- The first night, they ran out of soda drinks, Vodka, and white rum. They only had dark rum left the very first night we were there.
It took 3 days to receive a beach towel because the laundry machine was down, which meant the sheets in the room never got changed either during the entire stay. Housekeeping cleaned the room every single day, but don't expect anything except 1 big bottle of water left in your room. We were only provided 1 bath towel each for the entire stay. Some days the bath towels we're exchanged for new towels but we had to make it known we wanted fresh towels. We asked for a few extra towels but didn't receive any. The food.. let me tell you- I travelled to Holguin last year around the same time as this trip this year, and we had more variety last year for food than we did this year. This year we did have Chicken, pork and beef every single day- but it was every single day, every single meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). they did have eggs in the morning, but no bacon, the bread was used from the dinner before and placed out the next morning. The chicken, beef and pork were provided for breakfast as well, just re-heated from dinner the night before. We had to choose our 2 a-la-cartes right away, so we chose Italian and Mexican, Italian was awful to say the least. The food was cold, very small portions, overall it was disgusting. Mexican on the other hand, was delicious!!.
As the week went on, the drinks didn't get any better, we had 2 days of Vodka, and white rum- the rest of the week was dark rum only, as they ran out of everything else. They do not have Slushie drinks, so anyone wanting a slushie drink forget it, because they don't have anything slushie at all. Pina Coladas are powder, so they were thick and gross. They didn't have coffee in the buffet, bring butter if you're wanting butter because they only had butter for 2 days.
The resort, don't get me wrong, is beautiful, well maintained compared to the Occidental Arenas Blancas that we were connected to. That I wouldn't pay even $700 for. Their pool was algae filled, the food was even worse and lacked then our resort. I felt bad for the people that were staying at that resort, infact alot of them came over to Barcelo Solymar to eat our food, which meant very long lines for anything coming off the grill. As stated above, Barcelo Solymar does have a beautiful resort, the beach was absolutely beautiful, the ocean was amazing, the pool was wonderful, but without any of those- this trip would have been by far one of the worst. We made the best of it, but I will not return to this resort or Cuba infact for a long time until things change there.
Again, I am aware I am going to a country that is far different from where I live, so I don't expect perfect- I am the last to look at everything in a negative way, I try to see the positive and remember that Covid made Cuba take a very hard hit, there-fore I feel bad for Cubans because I know they could have beautiful places with more to offer, but they are badly suffering. I really would not spend the money for this resort. This resort is easily a 3 star resort, and I wouldn't pay over $900 for it for what you receive while you're there.

Selectum Family Resort Varadero: Wonderful experience
Selectum resort is clean and most of facilities are new. people working there is kind and friendly. When we have troubles about the door lock, technician came to fix promptly. One thing not satisfied is the fruit from the buffet has only limited options and no apples, orange or bananas etc. I suggest the resort can increase the level of buffet and kids program. Overall it is very value of money for my stays.

Blau Varadero: Great resort
The hotel had beautiful rooms on the non ocean view side. The food at the A lcart restaurants was good considering it’s Cuba! The main buffet is typically busy and it’s important to get there early for a better selection of food. The grounds were well kept and they had hot dogs and burgers everyday at the beach bar no French fries though! Great chocolate and vanilla ice cream everyday.

Melia Marina Varadero: We got by!
We had a few deficiencies to deal with upon arrival. We had "The Level" privilege package but with elevators being out it was 6 flights of stairs for every meal with a bum leg. The resort was nice, needed more attention though. Learned that this was last resort to reopen post covid so all the other resorts hired the best people. Melia Marina got what was left but they tried hard. A couple stood out, Joanna and Vladimir, our concierges. upon checkout, our bus ride to the airport was a no show and[... read more] cost us USD $50 for a cab to the airport. Blau Varadero: Wonderful resort
The Blau was a wonderful place to spend the week. The staff were very friendly no matter what part of the hotel we were at. The food was delicious, some repetition but that was to be expected due to supply shortages that Cuba faces . There was plenty of activities and entertainment throughout the afternoon and evening. A great place to stay!

Grand Aston Varadero Beach Resort: not for us
hotel was very noisy, understaffed, not one of the nicest beaches in Cuba. Food was mediocre, often low end foods.
However the rooms were lovely, new, everything worked.
Not nearly enough loungers or shade by the pool or beach.
Not five star at all.

Starfish Jibacoa: Starfish Jibacoa resort
On first seeing this resort it seems a little tired and in need of a refresh, but once you are there for a while you come to realize it's a nice little, quiet resort. The room was in need of an update, but it was always very clean, and the lovely lady that cleaned my room always left a cute little towel animal on my bed! The beach is wonderful, no fighting for lounge chairs, great sandy beach with good snorkeling. The pool was warm and clean, and quite often empty which was nice for a morning[... read more] swim. The food is ok, but you don't go to Cuba for the food, I never went hungry. There were some days where there was no milk, but my friend brought powdered so all was good. The staff was exceptional, always friendly and accommodating. Good wifi in the bar and reception hall. If you are an animal lover, there are lots of cats and some resort dogs to love. Overall I had a good experience here. If you are more into a fast pace resort with music, entertainment, games etc, I would suggest going next door to Memories, which is a more higher end resort, also more costly. For me this was a good experience for the price I paid.

Selectum Family Resort Varadero: Absolutely Amazing
This hotel / resort is absolutely beautiful. I just can’t say enough about it. So clean and modern, no shortage of food. The staff is always friendly and willing to help in anyway. The only downside if the beach is very rocky but I heard that they are planning to fix that. We are already planning to return same time next year.

Valentin El Patriarca Varadero: Alegance section : A definit must!
The personnel assigned to the Alegance section of the resort was amazing!!! Caring, attentive and helpful resolving issues, if any.
A private pool, bar and restaurant make a big difference if you're looking to escape big crowds and loud animation!
Note : The following star rating will be relevant solely on the Alegance option.
