Occidental Punta Cana: Great resort
Just got back from the Dominican on Tues. March 28, 2017. We stayed at Occidental Punta Cana. Although it rained every afternoon we still enjoyed our trip. We ended up in a non-renovated bldg. #10 which wasnt fancy but the location was the best if you enjoy music. We were facing the pool, lobby, buffet, restaurants and theatre. Therefore we didnt need to leave our patio to hear the nightly entertainment in the lobby and see the nightly shows. The Michael Jackson show was the best i have ev[... read more]er seen and I've seen a lot of them. He was spot on. The beach was beautiful, the food was exceptionally good at the buffets and restaurants. You can get a chair at beach or pool any time of the day, The only complaint was there were no sun huts anywhere. If you want a renovated room request any bldg from 14 up. #12 is the worst. Very clean resort and maids were very pleasant.

Casa Marina Reef Resort: Amazing resort! Great value!
Food was good, resort was beautiful, and there was a lot of activities. Resort is steps away from a Canadian owned bar in town with very friendly staff. Watching the waves crash against reef was entertaining all week. The servers don't smile, but I wouldn't either if I made $20 a week. Would recommend this resort to couples, families, or anyone that is looking for great value. Front desk staff are rude, but your not there to speak to them, your there to enjoy yourself, so don't let them get to [... read more]you. **4.5stars**

Barcelo Bavaro Beach: Superlative
We arrived March 19 for a week stay. 2nd time at this resort.
Pros- I have never understood anyone who complains about the food at these all inclusive resorts. I particularly love the buffet food, especially at Barcelo Bavaro Beach, you get way more choice over the specialty restaurants. We did eat dinner at 2 specialty restaurants and found the service and food average, but nothing compared to the buffet offerings, it is just marvellous!
Some reviews called the rooms "old or outdated". I t[... read more]hought them not to be. The Colonial style architecture of the buildings to me are pleasant to the eye.
The beach being in a bay, along with the reef make the waters quite calm. During two fairly windy days other resorts did not allow their catamarans out, where as because of more quieter waters Barcelo catamarans were sailing. One drawback however is the " water sports" are at the other end of the resort , therefore it is a5 minute walk.
If you walk or take the trolley train to the " Barcelo Palace" , you are in for a real treat. Entering from the main entrance, it looks like a concrete eyesore ( even though it has a coral veneer) , yet once inside you are truly inside a Palace with shops, restaurants and other entertainments.
Cons. They charge you for wi-fi services. I can't remember.
Any other resort in Punta Cana that has charged us for this service!!!
The Barcelo resort is the last along the beach before you enter a national park. My wife and I have twice in the past hiked along the parks beach several miles untill we get to another group of resorts. Now there are two "local tour operators" who have piers on this beach. You can get past one pier, but there is stream that is spewing out raw sewage ( that's what it smelled and looked like) into the bay, making it impossible to go farther!! To bad, because I can't get the smell and image out of my mind! It has ruined a beautiful beach

Viva V Samana by Wyndham: Enjoyed our vacation
The resort is lovely. We chose it for its being adults-only and small--144 rooms. Also, it's about 20 minutes by bus through gorgeous hills and views of the ocean to arrive from the Samana airport.
The room was on the small side but clean and attractive. Daily the fridge was re-stocked with pop, Presidente, and water. The bathroom had been updated and was pleasing with the glass shower stall. Our king-size bed was comfy. On the balcony were two wicker chairs with cushions. I think mo[... read more]st of the rooms would have a sea-view. We certainly did from our room in Building B, which is behind the buffet.
Food was just satisfactory even in the ala cartes. This was quite a let-down. The wine and 'champagne' were dreadful.
Beach towels were plentiful. The beach had sun loungers pulled up to near the shore so people were very close to one another. However, many people didn't mind being behind, and some even moved their sun beds to the grassy area. No palapas are present, which is sort of problematic since everyone has to move their beds to stay either in the sun or shade from the palm trees. Hence, the over-crowding. The pool was only four feet deep but was nice. A few Bali beds there are reserved early by people.
We had a good time but it just isn't the resort for us.
I must commend Kim Hartlen, our travel agent from Bedford, NS for being just fantastic! She is a total professional with a friendly touch. Despite my having to ask her some simple questions over the course of a few weeks, she was always polite and patient with me. We already have our next trip booked through her! 😀
We just spent a wonderful week at Barceló Bavaro Beach Resort, 18 - 25 March 2017 and I thought I'd pass on my impression of the resort.
First, the beach is amazing. Absolutely beautiful white sand beaches with plenty of lounge chairs and lots of palm trees to provide just a bit of shade. While there is no Beach Bar, the Pool Bar is easily within walking distance. We were within 50 feet of the bar and right on the beach so got to enjoy the sun and sip on those refreshing daiquiris and pina[... read more] coladas! There are sections of seaweed along the beach but for the most part it's all sand. Even got to enjoy some snorkelling - I like to just relax. While no coral reef within swimming range, I still managed to see a few fish including a ray and an eel. I was happy and we did a snorkelling excursion to really enjoy the wild life around a reef.
Second, the rooms are nice, clean and comfortable. The furnishing aren't the most luxurious - I would rate the rooms as 4 Star - but they worked and that's all you really need. Beds and pillows were super comfy and we although we only booked a standard room, we still had a lovely view of the ocean and the pool. The rooms were also nice and quiet which suited us just fine. Basically, people were at the Beach Resort to relax and enjoy. The sister resort, Barceló Bavaro Palace, was much busier with kids and lots of family activities.
The food was good. Buffets had a large selection and we never went hungry. Bear in mind, a lot of the food is going to be different from what you're used to back home. It has a different flavour for a number of reasons so don't be surprised if your steak or burger tastes a bit different. They also tend not to use a lot of spice because they have such a wide group of people to serve. We went to the Santa Fe Steakhouse, the Golf Course Restaurant and Chef Gourmet. The Gourmet was by far our favorite! The place was beautiful and the service was impeccable.
Service generally was very good. Spanish is the native language here and not everyone speaks fluent English so sometimes we didn't get exactly what we asked for but everyone tried and they were all respectful and polite. I know I wouldn't have done nearly so well if it had been me doing their job!!
Overall, we had a great week and got to soak in the sun and relax, which is exactly what we had planned to do!

Bahia Principe Explore Turquesa: Great experience
The resort was immaculate. Room more than met expectations. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Food, entertainment and amenities certainly didn't disappoint. If you didn't enjoy yourself, it wasn't the fault of the resort. It was our first all inclusive vacation but won't be the last. Thanks to Brian and staff at trip central. I'm happy that I found your website. Thanks

Viva V Samana by Wyndham: Wonderful vacation
The viva wyndham Samana is a smaller resort which is exactly what we wanted. It has been beautifully restored. The grounds are well kept and lush. The rooms have plenty of space and storage all have some kind of view of the ocean. The bathrooms look great but are narrow. The showers are very good which to me is important especially after time in the ocean. The beach is great for walking in either direction lots of privacy lots of beautiful homes to look at . The food is good there. There was som[... read more]e items that were very good others not so much.. after a couple days you find what you like best.. you certainly won't starve. They are generous with the drinks they have top shelf liquor and a decent white wine.the service in the restaurants runs from good to awesome. The man who runs the smaller lunch area the turns into the Mediterranean restaurant in the evening is fantastic. He really helped to make your time there a wonderful experience. Look for Santos! I would definitely recommend this place to people who want a relaxing friendly personalized experience. It is the type of place where you can do as little or as much as you want!

This is a great resort. Only 10 months old and very modern. Rooms are bright, clean and spacious. Food was excellent. no reservations needed for a la carte . Pools are salt water and always very clean. Beach is fabulous but we had big waves our whole stay. Drinks were good and the service was excellent. Would definitively go back. Thanks to Genesis and the whole staff.

Barcelo Bavaro Palace: Amazing time at a beautiful resort
Overall the resort was beyond fantastic. There was a lot of walking from the rooms to the restaurants and buffets but there was covered paths everywhere so you could stay cool and out of the sun if you so desired. A little disappointed that there was not free wifi, but that said, it was nice to put home completely behind us for a week. Also, if you go to this resort, make sure you make reservations right away at the various restaurants. We waited a day and had a really hard time getting into[... read more] places at a reasonable time for a family with kids.

Emotions by Hodelpa Puerto Plata: Worst Resort I Have ever been to
I am not one to complain about resorts I stay at. I have been to 2 Star Resorts in Cuba that are better kept than this one. This Resort is Rated as a 3 Star and is lucky to be a 1.5 Star. The Resort is in huge disrepair. There is basically minimal staff on hand. The first room assigned the bar fridge poured water out of its rusty interior when I opened the door. The air conditioner sounded like a lawnmower and did not cool the room. The second room the bed was like 2 boxsprings piled upon e[... read more]ach other. the mirror fell off the wall when I touched it. The food was even WORSE!!!. There was no selection trays of shredded cabbage and lettuce. The meat looked horrible and what they called chicken DID NOT LOOK LIKE CHICKEN. ( I don't like to think I may be eating cat) . Open trays of mustard and mayo cover only with a piece of saran wrap which appeared to used over and over again. After the first morning I asked for Air Canada rep. to get me out of there please and switched to another Resort. Thank God he was able to. The Rep called it a 2 Star and I would not even give this resort that.

Bahia Principe Grand San Juan: Booked it based on the grand Bahia PrÃncipe in Jamaica experience last year
Unfortunately, this was the worst, and because it was a Bahia PrÃncipe, the most surprising trip I have ever experienced.
I have been to the BP in both Tulum Mexico and Jamaica....love loved them
I booked this quickly through an agent because it was a BP and I depended on the quality.
My first room had a mini fridge that was old so the compressor sounded like a truck and there was construction and dust immediately across from my room entrance.
I asked to relocate and requested 'any' room as[... read more] long as it is quiet.
They located me across from the main pumping station for the site and the maids service area. This change required 3 trips to the front desk and waiting until after 3 pm. and when I got to the room, there were NO towels, period and no mini bar. Wallpaper was peeling, shower glass was dirt!!!
They moved me again, I OFFERED to pay any upgrade fee for this THIRD move. I literally said I was desperate for a four star quality room!
They insisted that I was correct to complain and they wld move me again
So the THIRD day I had to go to the front desk four times to make these arrangements
9, 2 pm, come back at 330 they said, then come back at 630. At this point I went back to my shitty room and literally broke down and cried out of frustration.
It took two more phone calls and the final room was ready.
So
Get into 2250,
Cannot have a hot bath for two reasons
Drain in the tub is broken and the water pressure is like a dribble, (room was great, clean, towels, in good order)
Air conditioner remote did not work.
Called desk
They sent repair guy, he agreed the remote was not working....he turned off the at and said he would fix it the next day.
That never happened
Then the storm hit
I lost all tap water in my room for 24 hours
The next day, extensive flooding on site and the main swimming pool was closed due to SEWAGE contamination.
For my last two days, not allowed in the pool or swimming at the beach due to rough water and debris. I was allowed to take out a paddle board ONE day of my entire trip.
I went alone on this trip for the first time and am so glad I did not subject anyone else to these conditions.
I start a new job next week and this was a quick getaway to recharge.
I travel south twice per year between Jan and May
This was the worst most stressful, horrible experience I have ever had. A four star?, absolutely not.
My trip dates were March 19 to March 26 2017

Bahia Principe Explore Punta Cana: Beautiful and Huge Resort
We loved the Resort, It`s very big. Once we got used to the location of everything, navigating was easy. Beautiful beach and sand.
Just a couple of negatives. Not too appreciative of all the vendors trying to sell you stuff on the beach, but they gave you room once they knew you weren`t interested. We actually bought a couple of things from them.
Most of the staff were great and would do anything for you, but a few bartenders and waiters were not very friendly. One waiter in Buffet w[... read more]as very rude.
The only other negative was the bugs in the evening in the lobby area. Couldn't see them or feel them, but could see the results in the morning. Nasty and very itchy.
Everything else was excellent. Very beautiful gardens, sitting areas, great food. Very clean Resort. I Loved the fact that there was so much to do. You could be very busy at the main pool, go and relax in peace and quiet at one of the quieter centrally located pools or go to the beach (where we spent most of our time). There was something for everyone. All in all, we loved the place and would definitely go back.

Positives: Lovely grounds, good variety food and drinks, excellent service by staff and clean resort.
Negatives: Rooms are old and outdated and there is low water pressure in the showers. You have to get up very early to get a lounger on the beach or the pool. You won't find anything available past 6:30 am.

Riu Bambu: Ok resort - 1st time in punta cana so hard to compare
The hotel was clean and the staff were very nice and hard-working . Beach was absolutely beautiful. Lots of chairs and choice for pools as well.
Some features that made it just ok for me were that for a family of 4 I found room to be pretty tight, beds were twins. Also our room was a long walk from pools and restaurants. My husband and I did get sick and think it was something we ate. Food was plentiful but I am picky ..and I did not like too many things. Got tired of buffet and seeing same th[... read more]ings all day. Italian and steak house were good.first time in Dominican but have been to Mexico several times and Bahamas. VH Gran Ventana Beach Resort: Great week at Gran Ventana!
Just got back from 7 days at VH Gran Ventana. Literally cannot complain about one thing. The resort is beautiful, spotlessly clean. We had a superior room which was more than sufficient, clean and well maintained. Mini fridge stocked daily with pop, water and beer. When we wanted diet pop we called and it came quickly and after that we were given diet without asking daily. Buffet was excellent as far as all inclusives go. Tons of variety. Little bit different daily. Tasty, hot and fresh. Beach is[... read more] stunning, clean and lots of space for long walks in both directions. Staff are so friendly and helpful.
