We travelled with our daughter, son in law and two grandchildren (2 and 4). This is a beautiful resort. Very clean and friendly staff.
Food was much better than we expected - which was a nice surprise.
The kid's entertainment was great and they enjoyed the water park, ball pit and characters.

Cofresi Palm Beach and Spa Resort: beautiful resort
I really enjoyed this resort, lots of pools to choose from, lots of a la cartes, the grounds were beautiful. I did not have any issues with my room, although i heard others did not have hot water. The staff was amazing, always helpful and always a smiling face to greet you. The only issue one may have at this resort is the steps. We had someone in our party who had a knee issues. There were approx 85 steps in all from our room to the lobbly, not all in one go, spriatic but anyone who has a probl[... read more]em with stairs or steps would find this resort frustrating. I would go back!!!! It was nice not to have to fight for a lounge chair around a pool!!!

We were lucky enough to get one of the villas, and it was one of the best accomidations that we have stayed at.
The beach and pool areas were out of this world.also the food and the resturants were very good.
We were also apart of the VIP package, check in was very quick and explained very well.

Barcelo Bavaro Palace: Barcelo Bavaro Palace - better last year
We enjoyed this resort last year and decided to return again only to discover that several things had gone downhill since then. Our first criteria when going down south is a great beach and this one definitely has it. There was never a problem getting chairs at the beach and the Barcelo chain keeps the beach natural with lots of shade from palm trees as opposed to man made palapas. The beach itself goes on for miles and although there was a bit of seaweed at this time of year they are constantly[... read more] cleaning it up daily. The grounds are beautiful and very well kept.
We stayed in a junior suite in the 4000 block which is very convenient to the beach and main buffet. The rooms are nice and large with a hot tub on the balcony which we didn't use. The cheaper rooms are quite a distance from everything but would probably be convenient if you were a golfer. I would recommend a room that is not on the ground floor to avoid any insect or humidity issues.
The main difference we found from last year was that the service level was lacking. The hotel was less crowded but the service was very slow or non-existent in some cases, particularly at the buffets. This was by no means a fault of the staff who work very hard but the fact that they seemed to be very understaffed this year. Compared to the Barcelo Palace in the Mayan Riviera (we were there 2 years ago) it was like night and day with regards to the level of service .
We were able to get a la carte dinners every night which was a bonus, normally I believe you are only allowed 4 per week. The favorite in our opinion was Las Brisas in the adults only section and La Fuente (Spanish). The steak and seafood were ok, Italian not very good but the worst part of the latter three was the ambiance. I can accept the "cafeteria" look in the buffet but not sure why it would be the same in the a la carte restaurants. No one feels special eating dinner in sheet lighting. The food at the buffets is especially good at breakfast, pastries and breads are to die for. I wish I could remember the man's name at the omelette station - he was awesome.
We are not huge liquor drinkers although enjoyed some wonderful cocktails at the Carey bar but were greatly disappointed with the house wines in the a la cartes. We are by no means wine snobs but both the red and white house wines were basically not drinkable. It looked to us like most people were ordering bottles of wine in the restaurants, probably costing at least $60.00 a bottle. I feel that for the price we paid for a 5 star resort we should be able to have a decent house wine. Again, this was much worse than last year.
Compared to last year the wifi was terrible. We paid $45.00 US for the week, reported twice that it wasn't working. My husband tried to send an email once that took over 2 hours. If you have to rely on the internet I would not recommend going here. Upon checkout we discussed this with the reception who said that he would contact us but I am doubting that we will ever hear back from them.
Last year we found the clientele to be mostly Spanish which is understandable since this is a Spanish chain. No problem with that. This year the resort was overrun with Russians who I imagine believe they are superior to everyone else based on how rude they were. The bartenders are so busy and work so hard that they cannot be expected to keep track of who is next in line for a drink - that should be up to the patrons. I cannot count the number of times that a Russian shoved himself in front of me to order a drink. I read a number of reviews that had the same complaint. If the resort is offering some sort of discount that is attracting Russians they may want to re-think that strategy.
Overall we had a nice vacation but based on some of the things we experienced this year it is unlikely that we would return unless some of these issues are addressed.

Cofresi Palm Beach and Spa Resort: Awesome Time in DR!
We had an amazing time at the Cofresi! Food was great, lots of options. Try the Italian and the Brazilian a la cartes and they were both fantastic. Lots of other comments mention a smell, which was only noticeable when walking past a sewer so this did not bother us. Yes, there are lots of stairs (all the better to burn off all the food and alcohol in my opinion), the resort is not very friendly to those with mobility issues but there are shuttles and alternatives to the stairs if required. Sunscape Dominicus La Romana: Great family vacation.
Going in I had read some pretty bad reviews of this place that were posted after we booked so my expectations were not that high. The resort turned out to be great and the people were super friendly to us (and especially to my 9 month old daughter). Overall we had a great week but it's far from the best resort I've been to over the years.
Pros:
- Room was great. A/C blew very cold. A big plus!
- A la carte Restaurants we very good and service was excellent
- Loved the outside plaza setup[... read more] with the bar and coffee bar vs a huge lobby. Way better than most resort lobby bars.
- My daughter absolutely loved all the birds by the ponds (ducks, geese, etc). Made out week
- Water was relatively calm (and all the colours you would expect of the Caribbean) and was perfect for taking our daughter for a swim without big waves crashing on us.
Cons:
- Food in the buffet was always cold
- Beach is very crowded
- Hard to find a chair. People put towels out to save chairs all day. Most of the time we barely even saw them being used. Resort has a policy against this but NEVER enforced it.
- The water sprinklers smelled like raw sewage when you walked by them
- Despite all the signage around the resort being in English it was difficult to find English speaking staff at most of the bars
- Long beach walks were out for us. Tried a couple of times but the beach was rocky and full of trash to the south and was at a 45 degree angle to the north making for really awkward (especially carrying a baby). This isn't specific to this resort. All resorts along this strip had the steep beach. We walked past them all (Iberostar, Dreams, Catalonia etc)

Grand Bavaro Princess: The resort was amazing
Everything about the resort was exceptionally clean.....rooms, restaurant, grounds, pool area, etc... the only down side was the foil smell coming from what we believe was the septic system outside our rooms! This was more pronounced after a rain fall.

It's a great resort. A little bit like paradise. A lot of different restaurants with great menu's. Less to complain about. If they try to fix the issue immediately. Sometimes a bit unorganized but I think that's Dominican Republic lol.

Catalonia Bavaro Resort: it's alright
Tiny bathrooms, with even smaller showers, could barely fit 1 person. The food was alright, nothing spectacular, the beach was not what I expected, I was disappointed, the resort is nice over all none the less, the staff is good except for the lady at the casino, she hated her job and it showed. There are little events during the day that can be fun to do to kill some time but definitely not a party atmosphere resort. Would not recommend as a resort if you've been to other great ones, but would [... read more]recommend as a first time down south trip. It's not bad, it's just not great, nothing 'wowed' me from it.

Bahia Principe Escape Ambar: Beautiful grounds and room
We were very pleased with the room and grounds at the Luxury Bahia Principe Ambar Green - this is the resort we were at - not the Ambar Blue. The room was really spacious and the bathroom was huge and always clean. The staff always left us lots of coffee and water - and once we had to point out the fridge wasn't replenished...we never had to ask again.
The food was mediocre - it was almost impossible to get HOT food - everything was lukewarm - even straight from the kitchen. There was always [... read more]a good selection of options to choose from. It was difficult to get slushy style drinks - strawberry daiquiris were impossible to get a good one.
We had a hard time getting any staff that had a good grasp of the English language so there were barriers when trying to get drinks made and food. Even getting a glass of ice needed a translater.
The majority of the staff was friendly and always happy to help if they could.
The biggest plus about this place was the cleanliness of the grounds, rooms and common areas.
My hubby and I were at this resort from Jan 26-Feb 3/17, I have travelled throughout the Caribbean as well as on cruise ships so this is not my 1st time out of Canada. I hope this will give you a well rounded idea of what the resort is like. We had a great time but remember you create your own experience no matter where you are!
There was lots to do, you can book tours with the travel centre right at the resort or stay, relax or be entertained nightly with the nightly show.
Let me break it do[... read more]wn for you.
LAYOUT
The resort is massive, you can walk or take the shuttle buses within the resort. The resort is on multi levels with lots of stairs and walking paths. Make sure you don't take the shuttle with the men with safari hats they are very pushy to get you to buy into the resort. If you do, just stay your ground and tell them you are not interested and only want a ride to your destination. We stayed in the convenience block 204-015. It was a couple of sets of stairs away from the lobby, buffet and next door to a pool.
ROOMS
Very clean, our maid Rosa took good care of us. Our tv broke and she had it swapped out within hours. We had a couple days of hot, lukewarm and cold showers but there was always lots of water every day. We shut off our air conditioner to avoid the musty smell coming from it by taking off the cover and fiddling with it. We slept very comfortable with only the ceiling fan on. Being on the ground floor the room stayed cool.
FOOD
There was lots of it and I never starved - I actually put on weight. Being lactose and gluten intolerant there was always ample food to chose from- fish, chicken, beef, pork, veggies, fruit, deserts as well as breads, pasta that I couldn't eat. The waiters/waitresses were always eager to please.
POOLS
There are many pools, more than you will probably swim in. It was nice to have an adult only pool (and a kids only pool) a pool by the beach and a pool by our room. Every pool had a bar/washrooms right there or one very close by. There was no shortage of lounger chairs; however, if you want a bed in the VIP or 'common areas' as I call it, you will need to get up earlier than I ever did!
BEACH/OCEAN
The beach is not huge but you can always find a spot on it. The yellow (caution) flag flew every day so there was small rolling waves and the water was stirred up and not clear but the water was about 80c. We walked down the beach to the rocks by Ocean World and the water was always calm, crystal clear and bath temperature. If you find the right path,
(about where the public beach starts, the water is crystal clear and light turquoise in colour between the seagrass) the water is shallow and you can actually walk out quite far into the ocean. In some places it looks like you are walking on the water from the beach while you are about 30 feet out in the water. The other end of the beach was also nice to explore on the rocks. There are several shops along the beach so take some money, massages are $30/hr or at least twice that on the resort. If you wear water shoes so you can walk around the rocky areas at either end of the beach. The area is filled with sea urchins in coral, small fish, crabs and the water is only knee deep. What a great experience especially for someone who doesn't want to snorkel.
Like anywhere, don't leave your valuables open and unattended- tourists like that stuff too! Most of all a smile and a good attitude will take you farther than your money ever will.

Blue Bay Villas Doradas: It's a solid 4.5
I grade based on if I would go back and the answer is YES. Staff is excellent and just a great entertainment crew. It's small so you can get to know fellow guests. Restaurants are not 5 star but the buffet has good variety every night with theme nights. Yah you pay for Internet and the in room safe and $10 to refill the mini frig but no biggie. Never a line for anything. All in all a great value for the money

Dreams Onyx Resort and Spa: Great Vacation
This hotel surpassed our expectations, especially for a brand new resort (only 3 months old).
The grounds were beautiful, and will only improve over time as the palm trees grow in. The different swimming pools were also great! We had a swim out room on the ground floor.
The actual hotel buildings were modern, and the rooms were extremely large.
The beach was great, some waves, but also some calm parts. Lots of shade on the beach and lots of palm trees. Sand was golden in colour and ve[... read more]ry fine.
No mosquitoes to be seen anywhere. We usually get bitten, and not one bite on this trip!
The staff were all excellent, friendly, and very helpful.
A true 5* experience.
