Great hotel/ great staff

my fifth time in the same hotel not fan of Cuban food but love Cuba and beach and people.. if you are not high maintenance and would like sun and beach and clean place worth it 100000 times enjoy and have fun cheers

Beautiful beach and grounds

Hotel is older. Need to get a room that is off the ground floor. Many many smokers here. Cigarettes everywhere . Food was fine and the hotel and staff are hospitable and experienced which means they listen and are helpful . We had a great stay and super week

Things have changed...

I was at this very resort in January of 2017, then returned in December 2017. I noticed that the resort was not as well maintained as in the past. The elevator was not working, and this was not communicated to us or anyone else at check-in. We were on the top floor which did not bother me other than when we had to carry our luggage to and from our room. We were there one week and it was never working. The railing on the spiral stairwell to the lobby (the only way there) was decorated with X [... read more]mas decor so that you could only hold on to one side. I felt bad for those with mobility issues as this was a major problem. It was a busy staircase and it was hard to get up or down. The outdoor stage was under construction. It looked like there was very little left to do, but it was not complete in our time there. For some reason, the resort decided this was the right time to renovate one of the restaurants. So the resources that could have gone to the outdoor stage and various other areas were put in the restaurant. So there were only two of three a la cartes available. We were told the Romantico was fully booked, but when we did visit that restaurant, several tables were left empty. More people should have been able to enjoy the only nice restaurant in the place. The shows were often in the lobby, which in such a confined space was just too loud. They are great when they are outdoors. The rooms are looking tired, especially the bathrooms. There were chipped tubs and sinks, and dirty grout in both rooms I stayed in. Beer and toilet paper were not replenished regularly. There was a major rainstorm while we were there, and our room, the buffet dining area and the pool bathroom all leaked extensively. Major streams, not drips. The palapas over the pool chairs were replaced with wooden covers that might be better for rain, but only offer a fraction of the sun protection they used to. Wish they were larger. More English channels needed on the TV. Loved the new smoothie station. All staff was great with the exception of the front desk. The beach and pool were great. If the price was right, I would return with the hopes that they look after a few maintenance items.

Great Resort for a week of Relaxation

Beautiful beach, Food was very good, Service was amazing, rooms were clean and spacious. Quiet resort, not much going on after midnight. We went for some night life but disco was always empty. Over all I would recommend this resort for people looking for a quiet and relaxing vacation.

Amazing resort !

Hotel was amazing, little damaged after hurricane but stuff really friendly, pictures on the website are probably made it 15 years ago, but overall still we had a very very good time. I'll recommend!

In need of major maintenance and repair !

If it wasn't for the great staff and beach area I would never even think about going to this place. Two elevators and none of them working. I was staying on the fifth floor and it was a terrible pain going up five flights of stairs at least four to five times a day ! This is not acceptable for a 4/12 stars hotel, especially when I saw a dead cockroach in the same area for three days ! Moldings in the room are barely hanging on and let's just say that the shower was not much of a shower when the  [... read more]you just have a minor drip of water pressure. The cafeteria has barely any air conditioning and the food is very bland not very creative and always a lack of fruit if not none at all. I was very disappointed with the conditions in this Hotel since I had been going there 11 years in a row, and the drinks in the lobby bar were terrible and often you were not served what you asked for. Very sad to say the least ! Oh yes one more thing, the exchange office was always closed, so you did not get the best exchange, since the Hotel reception was charging an extra exchange fee ! what a rip off !

Familiar place

I have been to this resort about 4 times and it has become like a second home to me. The staff all seem to be happy to see the guests and can not do enough for them. Never a disappointment. I usually come with family so we all know the layout and keep coming back to the Melia Las Antilles hopefully for a long time.

Terrible

Dear Sunwing,     My name is Stephen and my girlfriends name is Rowene We had the worst experience of my life with your company and the resort. The staff was the most incompetant unorganized people i have ever dealt with. Rude and 0 communication about the process of evacuating the huricane irma. We had asked to leave before the storm hit on wednesday and was told there is no possibility of leaving. This was simply untrue and you left is in distress and anguish for the rest of the w [... read more]eek. There was no running water, room cleaning or hot food for the remaining days. The rooms were atrocious and filled with ants and coachroaches. After the storm we left in a flooded room with not even clean blankets to sleep because they were used to stop the flooding. The food we were served was mystery meat sandwhiches left in room temperature for days on end. I wouldnt serve this food to animals let alone call it fine dining. The airport had us line up 2.5 hours before telling us that they cant check us out at the airport. 0 communication as mentioned above. We then had to reline up 2 more hours into wrong lines as your staff sat in circle and talked ignoring all upset passengers. This was circus of an airline team and unnaceptable. I feel really cheated by how poor this vacation was and want MY MONEY BACK! I will not be returning to Sunwing and telling all my friends family and social network of my experience.  I hope we can resolve this and have us fly sunwing in the future with an apology and full refund. Stunning Grounds

The grounds are stunning and beautifully manicured. The hotel in general was well appointed ... could just use a little face lift in heavy traffic area (ie: paint touch ups) The room was very spacious ... beautiful view of the grounds. We could have used an extra couple of towels ... Daily service was very reliable. The beach was 'a dream' .... sand was superb. Cleanliness was very appropriate. Food - was more than plentiful/variety/..... Just great especially for Cuba!!! THE SERVERS WERE [... read more] VERY GRACIOUS, FRIENDLY, ACCOMODATING .... When meeting other travelers and asking lots of questions, we realized that we were definitely in one of the better hotels .... THANK-YOU The hotel responded to my personal review within 1 day .... wow!!!

Beautiful resort!

The beach was beautiful with soft sand. I think the beach was better than Cancun and my daughter said even better than Hawaii. The resort staff were very friendly. For service I could give 5 stars but there was one lady from the restaurant (juice section) that was rude. The room was clean with good airconditioning. The food was good but it could be better if there was some hot salsa (salsa picante). Overall I give 4 star.

Average resort

The rooms are outdated. There were a few things that needed to be repaired: a switch light was broken in a bathroom, sink was leaking and there were stains in bathtub. Only switch light was fixed. Also, the mini fridge wasn't restocked every day. We had to call twice. Location is great: beach is amazing as the pool area. Very spacey.The food at the buffet is great with a lots of varieties. Everybody could find something for themselve: fish, seafood, meat, pasta, pizza, salads, pickles, vegetable [... read more]s, and fruits. Romantico Restaurant a la cart was the best. Service is not the best especially at the lobby bar. They not friendly and slow. They favoured guests who tipped the most. Of course there are some exeptions. The bartender at the pool and beach area are much nicer and faster.

Resort is nice BUT......

Arrival: We were greeted with smiling faces and a fresh drink upon arrival. Check-in was very quick. Rooms: The room we had overlooked the pool area which was quite nice. We could hear the music in the evening from the terrace. Our maid, Ines, did a great job keeping the room clean and refreshing our towels. When we would see her, she always made a point of asking if we needed anything. The beds were roomy and comfortable. Bar fridge was restocked daily. No issues with bugs or critter [... read more]s. There was never any issues with water. Always available and the right temperatures. The room could do with a little update especially the bathroom tub and ceiling Food/Drink: We always found something to eat at the buffet. Selection was similar each day, but plenty to pick from. The pasta chef, Michel, went above and beyond trying to find a sauce spicy enough to satisfy a guest that was standing in front of me. Impressive! The ladies making the morning smoothies and cooking the omelette on the right side were very good and always greeted me with a smile and good morning. Smiles go a long way. The Italian restaurant was very good with professional service. We, too, enjoyed the Cuban/Seafood a la carte. Did not try the Mediterranean a la carte. Guests have the option of trying all three a la carte. We did not have to wait long to book either of these restaurants. The snack bar beside the pool bar was pretty good. They had a menu, offered small buffet and serviced burgers, fries and sandwiches. Occasionally they had calamari available which was pretty good. The Mojito drink is very good there. One of the servers' speciality (don't remember her name) We were disappointed in the drink selection. Not many to select from at the beach bar nor at the pool bar. No menu available. So when asked for a particular kind they either didn't make it (ie. Banana Mama) or didn't know what it was. The last day couple days we did get one of the girls to make a concoction (Pina Colada slush and melon liquor). It was very good. Early in the day were the best slush drinks. By mid afternoon it was mostly melted and made drinks more liquid like. At other resorts, you can sometimes get a better drink from the lobby bar. Not at this resort. However, it was a nice place to sit and relax in the evening either inside by the bar or outside on the terrace listening the live entertainment. The bbq at the beach bar was very good too. The chef was very friendly. Grounds: The beach was beautiful. Perfect for a long walk or run from one end to the other. There were lots of chairs and shade available. Lots of fun playing volleyball, jumping the big waves or just relaxing. They didn't play the music too loud even when sitting beside the hut. The down side of this beach was the pack of dogs that hung out further down the beach. The first morning on a run I was attacked by two of them. They came charging at me viciously. Screaming for help, I tried to keep them off me with a water bottle I was carrying. Eventually I backed into the water when they decided to back off. It wasn't until the dogs backed off and I started up the beach (in the water sneakers and all on) that a worker from that resort came down telling me the dogs would not hurt me. It was because I was running. It certainly didn't appear that way. Had it not been for the water bottle I think I would have been dealing with dog bites! That same day we had a meeting with our Sunwing rep. I told her about the incident. She advised not to trust the dogs and it would be reported. Unfortunately that did not solve the issue of the dogs. I attempted to run on the beach two more mornings and saw the dogs on the beach again. Being aware of their existence, I would turn around and race back to the Melia Las Antillas before they had a chance to catch up with me. Not only were the dogs on the beach in the morning, there was one of them that ran up and down the beach during the day doing it's business anywhere. So be careful where you step! One early evening we saw the pack of dogs on the beach. One evening there was a dog on our resort. Laying around on the chairs beside the pool and chasing the cats. It followed us back to the lobby. I reported this and told them about my incident with the two dogs. The lady at the desk said they would report it to security who would have someone come get the dogs. Obviously they didn't take the too far because we continued to see them. This incident alone has made my decision on not returning to this resort or any resort on the Tainos Beach. I was very surprised by the service on the beach by some (not all) workers. Each morning there was a man on the beach sitting in a chair. Quite often I would get my own loungers. Drag or lift them through the sand to the hut. One morning one guy leaned against some loungers right beside the loungers I was lifting and dragging. It wasn't until one of my friends started to look for pieces to repair the chairs that he helped. He had not issue taking the tip that was given to him. However, there are a couple workers that are very helpful. There is no bar service on the beach. Suggest you get a hut near the entrance up to the bar. And there is no bathroom facilities. You have to continue the walk pass the bar to the pool bathrooms. The pool area is very nice and clean. Entertainment doesn't really start until later in the day. Nice and quite in the morning. There are lots of loungers available. Staying away from the swampy area would be suggested. Sometimes get the smell of sulphur from there. The hammocks are a very nice touch to this resort. It's a relaxing area in shade. We didn't try out the hot tub but it looks very nice. Entertainment and Facilities: There was great entertainment on the terrace after dinner each night. Nice place to sit and listen to the live band while sipping an after-dinner beverage (or not) or even kick up your heels. This was followed by a show over behind the pool bar. The shows were similar to shows at other resorts. One difference was the water show in the pool. That was a very nice change from other resorts and very entertaining! A WOW! Worth the watch. If your evening wasn't over by then, you could head over to the disco beside the Italian a la carte. The pool side entertainment daily is very good. The hosts are very enthusiastic (chow, chow Mickey Mouse). They are very good at remembering who you are if you get involved. The gym has the general equipment. Although the hours on the door indicate 9:00-17:00. You can enter anytime using your room key. There is a switch box on the back wall beside the ladies washroom (where there is a sauna located). This box runs the lights and the air conditioner. This is something one of the other guests showed me on my first visit. It became very helpful on mornings when I was the first to arrive. Overall: We had a wonderful time with our friends and fantastic weather. Unfortunately we do not plan on returning to this resort or dog infested beach.

Nice resort

Very clean resort. Same food all the time at the buffet, nice staff. Buffet tables were slow being cleaned off and made ready for others. Beach nice but had to get up early for shade. Need more huts for shade. Need more entertainment and music around the pool. Rather quiet. We had a wonderful maid. Our flights sunwing were late both ways. There was a great show by the poolside, we had an overall nice experience there.

Great getaway

We had a great vacation the resort was beautiful .Being an older resort it was very clean and comfortable . The staff were amazing. The food was good lots to choose from and the fresh cooked fish was excellent. We had the best Pina Coladas ever. We took 2 day trips and enjoyed these .The entertainment was great .It was just what we needed.

Nice Resort

Staff very friendly as usual for Cuba. Small resort so not tons of walking which is nice. Elevator access which is great for when your tires or for those who have difficulties walking. Grounds were always well kept and pretty. The surrounding water within resort was cool they have a shark that swims around and eats the algae. That was neat. The rooms are a great size and lots of space. Maids were prompt and friendly. I personally didn't like the Italian restaurant. But other then that there is [... read more] always something to eat. our room was stocked with 3 bottles of liquor (but not right away had to ask for it) not a big deal. And we were suppose to alway have two beers restocked and kept in fridge thy never happened The only suggestion or complaint I would have to say is that they do need more entertainment durin. The day at the pool. There was very little and nothing that exciting. Been to other places in varadero and entertainment knocked this place out of the park. But over all a great place for the money, very clean and pretty grounds. :)

Great mother daughter vacation

We just got home a couple of days ago. Had a wonderful time. Our check in was very quick. The front desk staff were very helpful when we asked questions. The staff were friendly. We had an oceanview room which we loved. The resort is clean. We did find it does need some repairs but that did not bother us after all it takes time and money. The walk way to the beach is nice with a little bar and bbq there where you can sit and get a drink and a sandwich. The grounds are nice. The thing we liked was everything was central. Not much of a walk to get to the restraunts or beach. We sat at the lobby bar at night and enjoyed the music. There was lots of food so anyone who says they were hungry is just too picky. We love Cuba and I have been there 11-12 times and would keep going. The resort has friendly staff and is clean and I would not hesitate to recommend someone going there. I feel your holiday is what you make it and if you don't like it don't go back. Overall we enjoyed ourselves and have nothing bad to say. I'll probably go back as I loved the grounds and staff.

Quiet, Serene and Calm with a Breathtaking Beach

This hotel was, basically, for the 'older' crowd--the rooms were adequate but dated, clean and the mattresses were, surprisingly, comfortable. We were lucky to get a ground floor room facing towards the pool area but centrally located. The entertainment in the evening was wonderful at the Outdoor Stage and some excellent live musicians sang and played in the varying restaurants. The pools were refreshing--but it was the beach that was the best thing of all--white sand,could look for shells along the shore for miles, lots of Cabanas for shade, decent beach chairs--and an aqua ocean as far as the eye could see--warm water until evening, people swam until the sun went down. The resort staff were welcoming-- -and we changed our money in the hotel to pesos, no problem. The only thing that always seems a hassle on most resorts is the fact that if you wanted to be under a Cabana for sure by the ocean, you had to put a towel or book on your chairs by 7 or so in the morning--lots of Cabanas but also everyone wanting some shade...We did get out on the Catamaran that was free for a short time but the fellas there were mainly looking to sell you a snorkeling trip to the reef and were reluctant to take you far--if at all. We enjoyed the sand, sun, entertainment and drinks--all definitely 5 star!

Great for 60 and over

Pretty resort, large palm trees, pond, great swimming pool, shallow and about 5 feet. Lots of chairs surrounding the pool. They could use more palapala at the beach for shade. Stayed in the cheapest room and the bed was good, showers hot, bathroom fine. Entertainment show almost every night, very professional dancers, excellent. Ballet/synchronized swimming show came in pm and evening. Live music every day at lunch and most evenings. Most staff good. This place has a lot of people from Canada,  [... read more]Italy, and Germany who are over 60. Perfect for this age group. Not for young people. I enjoyed my time there.

Amazing Family Vacation.

Exceptional location, meals, and atmosphere. The grounds were well maintained and cared for daily. The food was plentiful and extremely appetizing. Incredible selection during each meal and the a la carte meals were appealing visually and gastronomically. Rooms were spotless, mini fridge was stocked daily and no issues with any parts of the accommodations. The adults only was truely a plus and not just a section of a larger resort but was actually a true adults only resort. Check in was quick an [... read more]d efficient and room location was as requested upon booking. We would definitely consider this resort for any repeat visit to Cuba.

Great staff, amazing beach

We stayed at the Melia Las Antillas in Los Tainos Beach. We really enjoyed the "feel" of this resort with several buildings around a central pool. The strength of this resort lies with their staff, always friendly, smiling, helpful and sometimes playful. Food was varied with three on-site restaurants included in the price if one wished to have a change from the main dining area. They also served BBQ at lunch. All in all, we found the food quite good knowing this is often a complaint of visi [... read more]tors to Cuba. Live shows were staged each night and a wide range of music was played in various locations in the hotel ranging from Cuban beats to classical ... all in all a thoroughly enjoyable stay.
