Cute resort - some cons but does the job.

At first I was a bit put off by this place as my expectations were higher, but the place does grow on you. It’s a cute club and it has everything you need. The food could be better and I wish they had more options for drinks. I noticed that the bathrooms were always dirty and without toilet paper. I also wish the hotel staff were more knowledgeable to help tourists. For example, I asked if there was a free bus from the resort to the airport and the women at the desk didn’t know and didn’t  [... read more]care to help me. There were many instances were I felt pressured to tip and spend extra money which I didn’t have.

Love this place!

Wonderful staff! Hotel tries to go above and beyond and offer extras like beach parties, returner dinner, awesome shows and entertainment! Daily snack bar is so good...especially late at night:) Best part is everything is right on the beach!

We feel at home at this resort!

We have been to Club Kawama many times in the past 41 years. The staff are friendly and helpful. The grounds are beautiful, with lots of mature trees. The beach is amazing. The buildings are old, which we consider part of the charm. The food is good and plentiful.

My Home Kawama

As always I enjoyed my vacation with Kawama. I found the staff to be outstanding, polite and they are beautiful. This is my 4th time to Kawama and I absolutely love going there. I went to the returners dinner and was so amazed that Leida remembered everyone and stories about all. I will return again next year as always. Home away from home

Once again a fabulous time at Club Kawama. From the staff to the food to the beach to the entertainment to my single residence cabin on the beach, it was an absolutely fantastic week. My only regret was I didn't stay longer. Can't wait to go back.

Kawama oh mamma

I will be returning many more times. Great ; resort staff, safe property, excellent beach & pool.....plus fun nightly entertainment !!! Lots of variety in buffet which changes daily & amazing a la carte Italian resto. I'm low maintenance so it's a solid 4star for me. Red & white wine tho was not great but they redeem themselves in Italian resto.....

Affordable and good resort

The hotel staff was amazing..although the lobby was flooded by rain that couldn't helped. Our room was great but ofcourse the food could use an upgrade. Location fantastic right off strip. Pool was clean

Horrible resort

Rooms, beds, service, and food stuck. Beach is alright but that is the only redeeming factor. You couldn't pay me to go back. There are basic requirements I expect from a resort such as toilet paper in the bathrooms, functional toilets, functional sinks, easily accessible food, doors that have door handles and doors that you dont have to slam into with all your weight to get open. The service was horrible, with staff going out of their way not to help you. We talked to people who had been to this resort 5, 10, 20 times and I was shocked that someone would ever come back there. I couldn't lower my standards low enough. Just things like having toilet paper in the bathroom, such a simple thing, and inexpensive even in Cuba I imagine but they didn't have it. You had to stockpile it and carry it with you wherever you went, just in case. Super annoying. And when we would complain about to vacationers that had been there before they said thats Cuba, what are you going to do. Sorry but that's not cool in my book. Our toilet in our room didn't work, we told the front desk but nothing was done until our last day 20 minutes before we checked out. Our door couldn't be opened by our children because they couldn't push hard enough. Our bed was about appeared to 30 to 40 years old and within days I had back and hip pain. The wasn't good but it wasn't bad but I was ok with that as I had been to Cuba before and I was expecting that. What I wasn't expecting was a wait every where I went for food. This is the only vacation that I gone hungry on as I just didn't feel like waiting for food. And if you did wait and I Spanish person came they could cut the line and take the food that was being prepared for you and now you would have to wait longer. Super fustrating. I could complain about more stuff but if you have read this far you'll get the point.

Disappointing

A this price point, I had lowered my expectations substantially but I had not lowered them far enough. I had expected old buildings, bland food and bad beds but this was way worse. This resort is a serious state of disrepair.

Another wonderful vacation!!!

This was around 15 times to Kawama and we have no plans to change Resorts. Kawama is an old Resort, one of the oldest and while it is showing its age in some areas you really can not beat the staff and the ambiance of this old beauty. The rooms are slowly getting renovated, the pool is beautiful again and the food gets better every time we go. Yes there are issues, shortage of toilet paper in bathrooms.....there are hundreds using the facilities every day so yes it runs out. Buffet food, yes sometimes it is not warm enough or they run out....again many people are eating there so naturally it will be hard to keep trays filled and hot. It would also be so nice if people would pick up after themselves instead of leaving garbage laying around the pool or beach area, you would not litter your own property l hope. Also, when you are sitting having drinks or coffee in the bars, would it be too much to bring your glasses and drinks back to the bar so that the already overworked staff does not have to do. So many people make a mess and just walk away and leave it......come on people, show some respect. We are seeing so many of Kawama staff that are just exhausted from working so hard to make their guests happy, lets all try to be more compassionate to their feelings...... We can not wait to return to our beloved Kawama again and again......love our Cuban family and our home away from home.......

Week at Kawama!

Cleanliness: This was one of the cleanest resorts I have stayed at. The furniture, appliances, and other items may have been old (as are most things in Cuba), but everything was clean. I have never seen a cleaner pool (I have stayed at 5 Star resorts where their pools were not always as clean and had garbage floating around them). Staff: most of the staff were very helpful and kind. when they saw you they always smiled and greeted you. They did their best to accommodate our needs. Food: my [... read more] mom really liked the food. There was a lot of fish, lobster, shrimp, etc. I on the other hand was not a super big fan. Some of the spices/seasonings they put on their meat did not agree with me. That being said, their rice, beans, bread, pizza, fruit, and desserts (especially the rice pudding!) were all great. This resort has one buffet, two restaurants, three bars, and a snack bar. As well, down the road there was a great pizza place. Amenities: our room had a blow dryer that did not really work too well, a mini fridge that worked but then sometimes stopped working, a television with minimal channels, and a safe which cost 30 CUC to use (they set up your card for your room to unlock the safe). All of these issues we were pre-warned about in the reviews, so we were not the least bit upset. There was towels (I recommend bringing your own pool/beach towels and wash cloths), toilet paper was provided, but it is still recommended to bring your own because lots of the restrooms do not have any. The hotel itself did have a gym, pools, restaurants and a buffet, a coffee shop, bars, Wi-Fi for a fee and it only worked by the pool, there was a kid’s place. One thing I wish the hotel did have was a snack bar with more options (there was a snack bar but it had a limited menu and it took a while to get your food). Location: the location of Kawama is great. The beach was a 30 second walk from our room. There was a place right down the road to exchange your money. After a 5 minute walk you can get to where the hop-on hop-off bus starts and further down is the town with markets and restaurants. When we rode the bus we found the ‘fancier’ hotels further down were quite far from the town itself. Overall: I would for sure return to Club Kawama! It was not a five star resort, but the location was great, the staff were overall friendly, the price was fair, and it was clean as well as comfortable. I definitely would say this ‘3-star’ resort lived up to its ‘3-star’ status. The only way it could possibly get higher, at least from me, would be if they increased their snack bar options and upgraded their appliances in the rooms as well as got new beds (note: bring your own pillow, I am sure glad we did because their pillows were not great). As well, I wish the pool was open later (it closed at 6pm!).

Nice cozy resort with a character

I returned to Kawama after three months and I dont regret it. The beach is great, the ocean clean and warm, people working there are very nice, hard working, polite and accomodating to your needs. I feel home there. I cant complain about the food either. A lot of variety, the grill is a blessing fir omelettes in the morning and all kinds if grilled meats lunch and dinner. Leida is the best PR person. Good to see such a wonderful lady in that crucial position for the business. If you dont want to pay for beach towels or safe bring your own towels and suitcase key. Though nothing is lost there. We left things unattended everywhere. Security is awsome, my number one reason I chose Cuba in general. The resort is spread out, ask for bellboy service. The team is great fast and efficient. Oh and last but not least we did not experience any food poisoning or any other stomach issues on both visits there. I dont take this for granted given my experiences in other resorts or DR. Bring mosquito repellent. Have fun! Focus on the great things that Cuba and Kawama has to offer and not on what you are missing.

Amazing as always

This is our 7th trip to club Kawama... there was a time it was starting to seem a bit bad but it has taken a complete turn again for the better and reminded us why we fell in love with this place on the first trip. Staff is friendly and caring. Food is good and fresh and beach in the most beautiful

Amazing Trip

My husband, a couple of friends and myself go to Varadero Cuba every year for the past 5 years. We stay at Club Kawama it’s a 3 1/2 star resort but close to town so easy to tour by foot. Every year we find or do something new and meet with old friends we’ve met or make new ones. In the past 5 years we have done the Jeep tour, skidoo’s, Bettles bar, we found a local bar that was amazing but was closed this year. Found a place 2 years ago that had amazing cheap food but was lost to a hu [... read more]rricane last year and this year we ventured on a glass bottom boat that also let you snorkel and see lots of underwater wildlife. Nice place but bad ending

This is and good hotel with a nice amenities and services, but the responsible for the group (Hola sun) was available only for the first short meeting and last day we were waiting for the bus to return to the airport. It was supposed that the bus will pick up us at 5:10 (according to their information), we were at that time 5:10 (as the employees in reception can testify) but nobody pick up us., The stress was awful. We try to contact the responsible but was not easy, 3 times we talked [... read more] to different people of Hola sun but not solutions. In panic, we had to take a taxi and pay 35 Convertibles Cuban pesos to arrive to the airport. We almost lost the fly. we were the last two passengers to be registered, they gave us separate places in the plane. How come the responsible can forget two tourist in the hotel and never ask for them? I will recommend the hotel but not the Hola-sun company.

Nice vacation

Location is good. Rooms okay. No hot water for showers. Food was what we expected for Cuba. Nice restaurants near by if you don’t want to eat at the buffet. Beach is beautiful. Bring bug repellent if you are prone to bug bites. Sand fleas attack. Always umbrellas and chairs on beach. Overall we had a good vacation. Good value for money we paid.

A very special resort

If your looking for opulence, fancy food, and entertainment, then keep looking. But if you’re looking for clean, friendly, fantastic location, great price, small village feel, good food, then this is your resort. I can understand why people go back multiple times. We really enjoyed our stay and the staff were superb!

You must try this resort!

We just returned from Club Kawama and agree that this was one of the best resorts we have stayed at in Cuba. Pros - within walking distance to the hop-on-hop-off bus. The ticket is 5 CUC for the entire day. excellent pricing for vacation food excellent. Always fruit and raw veggies during the whole meal. In most resorts you need to go when the buffet opens in order to get any raw fruit or veggies. meat and maybe even fish seems to be marinated-yum! blood sausa [... read more]ge excellent!- we have never seen in any other resort. desserts as good as homemade and of great variety. Ice cream like you will never taste in Canada! homemade fresh bread daily. butter at breakfast. cats are not allowed into the buffet area. electrical outlets for Canadian hair straighteners, cellphone chargers, etc. front desk ladies are very nice and always smiling. Josone Park in the town makes the BEST pina coladas! 3 CUC each. you can feed the chickens, roosters and ducks with your pineapple that they put on the rim of your glass. Scooter rental to rent within walking distance - 25 CUC/day horseback riding available at a price off resort. paragliding, jet skiing available but not on resort. dolphin show worth watching. Do not buy from resort. It is 15 CUC each on site. Just rent a scooter or take the hop-on-hop-off bus. Find out when the shows are and take the bus or scooter. beach massive and clean 3 pools, so you will never be without a poolside lounge chair. It is not a party resort, which is what we like. There is always somewhere that you can sit and read that is quiet. So if you’re looking for a young person’s party resort, this is not it. Go to Barcelo Solymar. At lunch, there is a place that grills fish or meat for you on the spot, along with a rice dish that is served in a styrofoam container so you can take it anywhere! Awesome idea!!! Cons - first room(standard room) was mouldy smelling so we upgraded to a superior room. $20/night for upgrade. Worth it though. One superior room was mouldy smelling-in the old but very quaint building opposite the pool. front desk gave us 61 CUC for $100 but the Cadeca just outside of the resort gave us 68 CUC for $100. front desk charges $2 for internet card - Internet kiosk just outside of the resort charges $1. lobby bar makes the WORST pina colada no rum that we have tasted in Cuba! Overall, the pros outweigh the cons. A very friendly resort. Do not be fooled by the bad reviews. We decided to try it, and were very pleased with our vacation overall.

Home away from home

This was my 3rd trip to Cuba in the past 9 months and I am so glad I picked Club Kawama this time. I have finally found my home away from home. I enjoyed every part of my 14 days there, the beach, pools, staff, entertainment, food, and room were all above what I was expecting and prepared for. I will absolutely return to Club Kawama for all of my future visits to Cuba.
