Great place

this hotel more than met my expectations. Rooms were basic ( its Cuba ) but very clean. My maid Alina was wonderful, good English, very helpful and a pleasure to get to know. All staff except for maybe the ladies at receiption went out of their way to make my stay a good one. I am a senior lady and travelled alone without ever having concern for my safety or wellbeing in this area of Cuba. If you like spicey food you aren`t going to get it but what is there is very good, lots of selection and  [... read more]plentiful. Take bug spray there`s mossies and sand fleas ,but if you spray yourselves its not a problem. Great resort,great weather, great beach, wonderful people what more do you want.

Bien situé près de la plage et de la ville pour faire le tour des kiosques d'artisans, s'assoir sur une terrasse avec une bonne bière et manger ailleurs qu'au buffet de l'hôtel (on a vite fiat le tour après quelques jours).

For a 3 1/2 star hotel ..it was good

the grounds were very nice and well maintained. The maid service left something to be desired. The food was quite good ,,but repetitive. Overall, we would not hesitate to go back. The dining room waiters were excellent and the bar service was very good. The Mexican ala carte dining room was not Mexican and the food was not very good. The Mediterean restaurant was much better.

grounds and beach beautiful...thanks to ricardo who always worked so hard to get our beach loungers and didnt always expect a tip...heads up staff...that works...most staff amazing, Lobby bar was the exception...only friendky guy was joseph...thanks joseph...others would be talking amongst each other while you waited...not professional at all. The AC in our room was dripping buckets of water when we arrived and toilet leaked....the room above also leaked...but got it all fixed with the except [... read more]ion of upstairs leaking...thanks to the maid Annia...Beds were comfortable...fridge froze everything...no controls on it.. beach bar was good although i found it somewhat rude that yusef would ring a bell every time you tipped...didnt like the idea you had to pay 1 cuc for a beer in the can food overall was quite decent...service could be improved...more staff is needed, ditch the straws as they make a mess of the beach and resort pool bar had great service...kudos to the maitre dee the games were awesome....regla you are amazing....night entertainment excellent... Canadian exchange was a little specious....heads up Barlavento....exchange rates should be posted every day... over all a decent resort...i will return

Would definitely go back

The food and service were superb at the ROC Barlovento resort. The beautiful gardens were always immaculate and staff very very friendly. Rooms were comfortable and always clean. Would definitely return!

Unbelievable Staff! - ROC Barlovento

Beach was beautiful, staff was by far the happiest, friendliest and accommodating I seen. The nightly entertainment was great as well. A few issues with the room, we didn't have a fridge and our in-room hair dryer didn't work, but we didn't complain at all, and im sure if we did we would have been immediately accommodated by the staff. All was great, and are most likely going to book the same resort again on our next vacation to Cuba

Location is the reason to stay at Barlovento

This was my 3rd time staying at Barlovento. I like to stay in this area of Varadero. You are able to walk into the centre easily as well as cross the bridge and grab a taxi to other areas of Cuba. Our Cuban friends can easily visit us on the public beach beside the resort. There are good restaurants nearby and the canal to wander along. To me this makes staying at the Barlovento a good choice. The resort has been updating things. The buffet has made some welcome changes and I did notice [... read more] an improvement. New chairs and shade shelters around the pool are nice. The A la Carte reservations are waiting for you when you arrive. I changed our times and the number of guests easily by visiting the Customer Service desk in the lobby. The resort keeps the same staff year after year. I was really happy to see so many familiar faces. Many of the rooms have been renovated. Unfortunately, we did not get a renovated room. The bed was a back killer and the pillow on the nasty side. Our toilet kept running unless you jiggled the lever...just so, I often took off the tank lid and manipulated the flapper myself. The air conditioner dripped water for a few days. Room cleaning was hit or miss. Only one bottle of water per week. Only one small bar of soap per week and the body wash and shampoo reservoirs were not refilled when they were emptied. One day our full garbage can wasn't emptied. We did tip and leave gifts for the maid, so can only assume that some of the issues were hotel policy. The bar and wait staff were great once they got to know you, but the first day or so it was hard to get their attention. I would probably return to Barlovento because of its location. It is a nice compact resort on a lovely beach, walking distance to everything.

Roc Barlovento, Varadero, Cuba April 09- 16, 2017

Our trip to Varadero Cuba was not good. It was Amazing!!! The room was nice, the beds were comfortable, always fresh towels. The air conditioning worked well, the refrigerator worked well. We had hot water, We watched "Showtime" late at night. All the staff were very friendly and accommodating. The swimming pool was nice but the beach was simply breathtaking. The food was better than expected, no tummy troubles at all. The live entertainment at night was so much fun, everybody got to dance wit [... read more]h the performers (if you were brave enough) Short walk to the flea market, cheap cab ride to the "Beatles Bar" where we spent 5 out of 6 nights. All in all it was probably the most fun I've ever had on a one week vacation. We already want to book a 10 day trip in November.

Beautiful Resort

My 11 day stay at the Roc Barlovento was AMAZING, the grounds of this resort was always cleaned , ashtrays in very corner of the resort therefore no cigarettes butts on the ground which i found this very very good and clean. The Resort is adapted for wheelchairs which is a + and it is an Adult Resort and alot of French Canadian speaking people. The food was very good alot of varieties , 2 resturants a la carte (mexican and mediterrean-fusion). There was also the Ranchon near the Beach which was Bar BQ each day and they also had ice cream cones. The beach was Amazing to walk on, always kept it clean and also lifeguards to help out. I have been going to Varadero for 14 years and always at another Resort - this Resort the Barlovento was great and I would go back for sure.

Friendly resort

1st time at this resort. Food is good, BBQ at lunch near the beach is good & fun. Bacon every morning, fries at lunch & diner, always a choice of fish, pork, chicken & boeuf, vegetables include carrots, peas, potatoes, good dessert... The pasta cook is a show to watch when he flips the sauce & pasta in the buffet area. Staff is friendly (not so at Reception desk) but you have to talk with them don't be shy to ask. Some people put their towel on chairs around the pool very early in the morning but nobody uses the chair during the day... Nice beach with lots of huts. Lots of mosquitoes in the room & lobby. The ground is clean, toilet paper & hand paper towel on the resort - rare in Cuba. Location is right at the beginning of main street, easy to walk to the market and restaurants near by. I enjoyed my stay and would not hesitate to go back to this resort.

Varadero

The good outweighed the bad. Food was very good and a large variety, the animators extremely pleasant and fun. A show every night. Close to the airport I consider this a plus. Beach nicest I've been to in Cuba. Negative is the mal-function in my room. Fridge, dim lights, no lights in certain areas to get to my room, no balcony, no decent view. No complimentary water battle asked 3 times.

Amazing Food ,Service and View

The hotel was under renovation but the staff were able to keep the hotel clean and the noise to a minimum. The housekeeping staff were very efficient, friendly and made me feel very welcomed. The front desk staff were excellent and knowledgeable about different venues and shops. Don't believe every thing you hear about the food in Cuba . We enjoyed a variety of foods all seasoned to perfection. Amazing Friendly Resort

Had the best trip again to this cozy resort. Rooms are clean, friendly staff, grounds were always clean. Great buffet with good variety of food, and bbq everyday was amazing. The beach is always beautiful and the new beach bar is a plus.

Beautiful Resort very friendly and best beach ever.

This is an older resort, small but very friendly, and clean. Grounds were always clean, and there were many upgrades done since my last visit. Rooms are clean, and if any problems arises, they are very quick to fix the problem. Food was good, and a bbq every day was awesome. Beach, as always beautiful, and clean. The new beach bar is a beautiful addition. The resort is located within walking distance to market and bank/banking machine, and good restaurants. Our Favourite Resort

Have been to Cuba over 30 times and have stayed at Roc Barlovento many times We find this hotel very clean, great staff and the better meals of many I have stayed in over the years in Varadaro. Fruit selection; coconut ice cream; baked goods and breads .Made amazing sub sandwiches for lunch with their tasty cheeses and cold cut selections. Have stayed at the 5 star newer resorts at the end of Varadaro but prefer the closeness of the beach.flea markets; restaurants; fishing etc. with this re [... read more]sort being only .three levels high.- no elevators or far walking. .Love the daily barbecue close to the beach if you simply want to put your cover-up on and remain outside under a great large hut. -next to the beach. We especially like the location. My husband loves to fish so he brings his retractable rod and simply walks across the road every morning to fish with the locals. The locals are very accommodating with giving /selling you shrimp for one peso as bait. If you would like a change and night out simply walk the next block to the right to Kiki's for great pizza. or the left across the road for lobster. One of the pools is being renovated and I am hoping that they consider putting steps in this pool - as this is an adult only resort. Many guests are older and I noticed a few struggling to get up the ladders in the larger pool. Many updated rooms with flat screen TV's. Our room was close to the lobby. .second level ..overlooking the pool. We did not mind...but the rooms around the pool can be quite noisy up until 11:00 with the entertainment close by. Entertainment was the best I have seen. I am also hoping that they re-open the coffee bar adjacent to the bar in the lobby...may have been closed due to the season as this takes the wait time off of the bartenders trying to serve drinks only Public Relations - Katia was amazing. A very sincere caring lady.. always wanting to make your experience great. Always seem to return to Barlovento due to all the above positives of this resort. My favourite resort in Varadaro at this time....

Pleasant Small Resort

Staff at the ROC Barlovento were very hard working, and very helpful and pleasant. The bedrooms and the Public areas, indoors and outside were kept clean, and the staff seemed content in their jobs, and the Resort running relatively well. My only problem was the noise level from the Pool/Entertainment area, but the Sunwing Rep helped me change my room to one that was very quiet and pleasant overlooking the Tennis Court.

Great resort

We had requested a quiet room with balcony with our travel agent. When we checked in were assigned room 2009. It was quiet but no balcony and was in the older section and to be honest it needed an update - old furniture, etc.and dark, which made it a little depressing. Went to front desk and requested a change, showed Sunwing magazine page that said we would be in a renovated room with a balcony or terrace. The front desk was very accommodating, we couldn't move that day but we could move to  [... read more]room 245 after 12:00 the next day. Very happy with the new room, not quite in the evening as it was overlooking the pool and stage area, but that was ok because we went to the evening shows. During the day we were at the beach, which is great. Lots of space and trees if you wanted shade.

Excellent stay

A very good resort, clean, friendly staff and the food was good. The beach is amazing. The best I have ever seen. The entertainment during the day and at night was excellent. The location is also excellent, a walking distance from the market. Be sure to ask for the renovated rooms. I recommend this resort and will not hesitate to go back.

Great resort

Hotel, Grounds, Beach, Rooms are well maintained, The location of the hotel could not be any better.. Shops, restaurants and markets all within walking distance from the resort. Service was excellent and staff very friendly. Food could be a bit improved as there was lots of repetition. Entertainment was just right for adults. certainly will stay at the hotel again.

I'd go back

Food was above average for Cuba, same food, limited variety, but tasted better. That's Cuba. Grounds well kept, people very nice. Resort has keeps cats, all spayed by a Canadian veterinarian....I thought that was amazing, being an animal lover. Bring cat treats if you go. Beach is stunning. Downside: the room. AC got fixed the day I left....toilet needed fixing the night I arrived at midnight but they got it done within the hour. Shower quality....terrible.
