Sol Cayo Largo

This was a great vacation the rooms clean but the beds very hard, the food was as good as we have experienced in Cuban resorts, the staff was hard working and very attentive to our every need. The first day we had no water pressure but that was repair by the next day. the pools were clean and well taken care of and the ground were as well. We truly enjoyed the beaches and there was always chair and shade huts for us to use, the chairs were not covered with towels if nobody was there to use them. [... read more] We would return to this resort.

Amazing Beach

The rooms, as per other reviews I have read are a little dated. The room service was excellent. Water and beverages replenished daily. The food at the buffet was okay. Grilled fish and omelet bar were very good. The restaurant located by the beach was very good at lunch. The service and food at dinner was sub par. We had an ocean view room. Awesome Beach!

Booked online through Tripcentral agent Saskia Singh. Very attentive informative Agent before and after holiday. Thx. Saskia. Flight was with Cubana Air had no issues. Quick Airport service on arrival....10 min. transfer to resort big bonus. Excellent Holiday! It's all about the BEACH for me. Pristine maintained beach infront of resort, cristal clear turquoise water. Sand has consistency of icing sugar. Great for walking. Resort grounds, buildings exteriors and pool exceeded my expectations. All in good condition. Newly painted buildings new boardwalks to beach...all great. Interior of my room 2313 was basic but clean. Great maid service. Only minor issue was with water pressure and no water during certain hours a few times. Was an issue with some people. Only ate at buffet restaurant (breakfast + dinner) beach restaurant (lunch) both spaces great and open air. Food and service at both was OK sometimes good. Room for improvement. Comparing to Melia Cayo Santa Maria which has been consistently good on both fronts...3 1/2 vs 4 1/2 star though. Beach + resort grounds + buildings better Sol Cayo Largo. In my view. Interior of rooms + function, service and food noticeable edge to Melia Cayo Santa Maria. In my view. 6 times MCSM. Can't wait to go back to Sol Cayo Largo. First time trip to Sol, Cayo Largo, Cuba

Just back from our first trip to the Sol resort in Cayo Largo (CL) Cuba. The purpose of our trip was to spend some downtime on a great beach. Flight: Flight in from Toronto on Cubana Airlines was uneventful, with about an hour stopover in Santiago de Cuba before flying to Cayo Largo. The flight back from Cayo Largo was direct to Toronto. Staff/Service The Cuban people who work at the resort were wonderful. Very hard working and always friendly to us. Service was great and we had no concerns during our stay. Room We stayed on a second floor room near the back of the property. We still had a bit of an ocean view from our balcony and you could hear the waves crash in on the beach. The room had a comfortable king size bed with an additional single bed. A/C worked but we found it too cold so we used the ceiling fan or kept the patio door open to get some ocean breeze. Other amenities: Safe in room, TV (did not use it much), fridge, one bottle of water per day. Loved the vaulted ceilings. Water pressure was low at times for us, but always lots of hot water. The room was always kept very clean Renovations underway - pool swim up bar area was closed, lots of painting Beach The most beautiful beaches we have ever visited. Beautiful walking beach Divided into two areas, clothing and clothing optional areas, with the C/O area being very busy. Bar on the beach, in the clothing area of the beach The boardwalks were in very good condition and looked like they had been re-built recently. Red flag most days, but still lots of people swimming, take your ability into consideration. The waves were fun to swim in. All sand, no rocks, no jellyfish, no sea urchins anywhere. Loved the Iguana who was out daily Food The food was good throughout the resort. We ate mostly at the buffet, plus at both a la carte's Loved the band playing Cuban music at lunch at the beach grill daily. Pool the main pool was very quiet. We used it on our last day prior to departure. Lots of chairs and a good mix of sun and share areas to choose from. Loungers were in very good condition. Most people migrated to the beach area while we were there. Internet - did not use it. No comment, but available in the lobby area. Texting did work for our cell phone. Recommend: Exchanging money at the airport, it is a better rate than at the hotel. Getting a ground floor room if you have mobility issues. There are no elevators to second floor rooms. Getting a beach front second floor room if you like a direct view of the Caribbean sea from your balcony. The ground floor rooms are blocked by the sand dune area. We had a great visit to the Sol resort, met lots of nice people. Amazing resort

Our fourth time back, love the resort, staff are amazing and helpful and friendly. We have never had a problem with the food, there is always something you can eat we both managed to put on a couple of pounds, rooms are basic but adequate and clean. Hotel grounds and pool are kept up in good condition. work is ongoing through out the resort to keep it up to-date.

Best Family Vacation

The attention by the Staff at Sol Cayo Largo made our stay wonderful. You cannot beat it for value. It is Cuba so don't expect Ruth Chris steaks or anything but the food was very good and enjoyed by all. Activities great.

Amazing resort

Everything was good, except every one from the stuff expects you to speak Spanish. No English just very annoying!The place is beautiful!!! The beach is beautiful! Food was good! And 24/7 bar, outstanding! I will go again, just I have to learn Spanish!

Very nice vacation spot

I did really liked the resort although a bit outdated, but the amazing staff and the breathtaking view of the beach compensate for that 100%. The only thing that was mildly annoying was the lack of fresh towel due to the washing machine being broken. What I loved the most there was the beach, and the people. Definitely will go again if given the right price and timing is right

Awesome Experience

The rooms were clean and comfortable, staff was friendly and helpful, and the food was delicious. The beach was beautiful, we had an excellent experience and would definitely consider returning for future trips. The releasing of baby sea turtles on the hotel beach was an amazing experience we will never forget.

Beautiful and relaxing as always!

The Sol Cayo Largo resort was like in our memory great!... We think the beach is the most beautiful of Cuba to our taste. We appreciated the little attentions as returning guests. Noel was very intertaining on the night of the repeat guests diner. The employees are in general very nice. Thanks to our maid, she really made our stay comfortable. Food was ok. It's Cuba.... We appreciated the climatised section of the buffet, it kept most of the bugs out and it was so hot while we where there [... read more] I don't think I could have eaten without sitting there. Bring your bug repellent! I wish I could remember the Pasta guy's name.... Great resort

Overall for the price this is a great resort. Beach is fantastic. Only real criticism is at the main desk they should have someone that can speak English as well. We'll definitely be coming back sometime in the future. .

Stunning

I had a great time at sol cayo largo cuba...the resort was beautiful,,,very clean..the people were very friendly,,for a small resort like sol cayo largo i found everything to be of my liking,,,excellent food,,,lots to do or if you just wantrd a relaxing vacation sol cayo largo is where to go,,,i would highly reccomend it to anyone,,,and i would love to go back next year,,,i would give it a 5 star

Wonderful resort

Great place all round excellent staff really looked after us very attentive, the holasun rep on site did not help me at all when I lost my phone at the airport, l had to drive back and try to find it talking to staff who spoke little english, anyway after an hour finally got the phone. Back, this was not a reflection on the resort, just the rep from holasun

The most beautiful beaches I have ever seen

The hotel is showing its age but the workers are doing everything to keep it up. If you are a stickler for details you might be disappointed. For me all the little small things did not change a thing. I had the best vacation ever. The staff are all great, I wish I had asked the name of the young lady at the desk because she went way out of her way to make sure we got the ideal room. People talk about "Cuban food" anyone who has been to Cuba does not expect a lot, that being said I have been to the islands 9 times and this was the best Cuban food I ever had. I would like to mention that the manager of the Ranchon restaurant needs to be retrained in how to treat guests. We made a simple mistake and he berated us like we were bad children. We had three beds in our room, two of the matresses were hard but the third one was just fine. The water was not running for a day, we expected this as I had read about it in another review. We were given a gallon of spring water to clean up with. For me the few hours with no running water was no problem at all. Understand this is an Island with limited water resources. Also every hotel on the island was affected by this lack of water. You can walk more than 3 kilometers on the beach, I did this every day. Bring water and extra sunscreen. I read a lot of reviews and I remarked that a LOT of the reviewers had been to this hotel many times, some as many as 15 times. We met a couple that have been coming from England for decades. Even with the small problems I hope I can go back again and again. I just loved my visit.

Wonderful!!!

We had all what we needed and more. Cozy room with superior ocean-view room. Every morning I could watch sunrise on my balcony. Beautiful beach! Friendly and helpful staff. Thanks to Eduardo from a towel service to provide us with fresh coconuts every day and doing crafts (papier-mâché) with my daughter. We had enough of choice of the vegetarian food. Beautiful night shows. Thanks to all staff from Sol Cayo Largo!

Gorgeous beaches!

Our overall stay was amazing! Such a beautiful setting and so relaxing. The fridge in our room never worked and the air conditioning could only be set at high. We never had any problems finding beach chairs or umbrellas. Food was a bit repetative but plentiful.

Resort improving

This was our 4th trip to Sol Cayo Largo. The weather was great, a little windy and the tides were higher than usual. staff were outstanding, food okay. The resort is doing modest upgrades. All the talk by staff are expressing good things to come to the resort because of the Americans they accept to be visiting soon. I was told while exchanging some money that very soon the US dollar will be 1 for 1 in all of Cuba. Had a great time and will be returning in the fall.

It's all about the beach

The hotel itself is getting a little tired despite having a fresh coat of whitewash over the previous decorative painting. The grounds are becoming more beautiful with time as plants continue to flourish under the care of the gardeners. The further you walk down the beach, it continues to pile up. Another complaint I have about this hotel is an inability to control inappropriate behaviour on the beach. There was an enthusiastic (male& female) couple insisting on displaying sexual behaviour indiscreetly on the beach, all times of day. Maybe a lifeguard could be employed to keep an eye....

Overall Good

Location on the beach was good, but the Sol Pelicano further down the beach has the best beach in that area (less wavy and windy). Staff are generally helpful and the food was good for Cuba (from what I hear). Rooms are quite dated but hotel grounds are very well maintained compared to the Sol Pelicano. Would recommend this hotel if you're going to Cayo Largo.

Great place to relax and do Nothing

If you are looking for a place to relax and sit by the beach or by the pool and only to do this, then this is the place for you. Beach is beautiful, pool area was nice. There was only one day we couldn’t find a place on the beach to sit in the shade, not problems any other time. There is not much else to do other then relax. Like I said, if you just want to lie  [... read more]around, this is perfect! We were there from Jan 28 to Feb 5, 2016. Weather was amazing the whole week! ROOMS: These are average. Do not expect high end. If you are one to spend time in your room or need a good bed, this is not for you. Bed is a typical worn out sprint mattress. But if you’re just using it for sleeping, it does the trick. Room is very out dated looking, but that is just the decor. Rooms were clean from everyday use, but could use a serious scrub down and a fresh paint job. Bathroom is nothing you write home about. Again needs a good scrub down. You have key cards to enter your room and another key to open your safe. There is a small bar fridge (not stocked). Hair dryer worked great. TV worked and was clear. You have 2 English channels (Discovery and CNN) Our ceiling fan works, would wobbled like crazy and looked like it was going to fall off. AC was a bit confusing. Not sure if it is like this in every room though. When we got there, the AC was turned off. We looked all over the room for a switch to turn it on, but nothing seemed to work. We noticed on the wall that there was a little plastic holder that looks like it would hold a remote, we figured that was for the AC. We were going to go to the front desk to ask if this was missing. As we were leaving, right by the door there is a covered panel box. We opened it up and noticed one of the breakers was turned off, we switched the breaker and the AC turned on. We left for supper and when we came back, it was a bit less muggy but not very cool. We left it for the night thinking that maybe this is what the AC was like. After 2 days, the AC finally started to work. Our room was cold. Sometimes we would have to turn the AC off because it was so cold. So if you don’t think your AC is working, it probably isn’t. FOOD: This was average also. We never went hungry, we always found something to eat, but it is very repetitive. Buffet open 7:30-10:30am(breakfast), 1:00-3:00pm (lunch), 7:00 – 10:00pm (dinner)- For dinner they have 4 stations. 1) Grilling station. They have pieces of meat (chicken, steak, pork, sausage, etc) out and you tell the cook which meat you want and the grill it on a grilling plate. 2) Pasta Station. You tell the cook what type of pasta you want (2 or 3 precooked types) and you pick the ingredients that you want in your pasta (Onion, garlic, pesto, olives, ham, sausage, capers, etc) and pick what sauce you want (tomatoe, meat or alfredo) This mix it all together and cook over a hot plate and serve it to you. 3) Fish station. Same idea of the grilling station, just different types of fish. 4) Main Buffet station. While we were here it was either fish or a roast (beef or pork) that is cut and served to you. In the main Buffett for the sides is where I had the most trouble with. Didn’t recognize most of the dishes and are not brave enough to try. There was very little fresh vegetables but there was some fresh fruit. There was a bread table, lunch meat table, cheese table and dessert table. There ice cream was really good! The buffet was closed for lunch for the week that we were there, so we ate from the pool snack bar. For breakfast, they had an omelette/egg station where you pick your ingredients and they make you a fresh omelette. They also had a fresh crepe station. They had some left over food from the night before, and some more traditional breakfast items (hard boiled eggs, ham and pineapple, Bacon (or what they call bacon)in the main buffet station. They had a cereal section with milk and fruit. The bread section with the toaster. Pool Side Snack Bar open 11:ooam – 6:00pm. This was food that was made to order. Very limited menu items, but were very good. They had Pizza, Pasta, Hamburgers, Chicken, steak, and pork sandwiches. Pizza was amazing, I like the hamburgers and the husband liked the chicken sandwich. Gets very repetitive when you eat it everyday though. Beach side Buffet – Open 11am – 3pm (then turn into an a la carte 7:00-10:00pm) We only went there once and didn’t like anything we seen so we didn’t stay and went to the pool snack bar and very came back to try again, so I can’t really give a review. International A La Carte – We were told that you get 1 a la carte meal. You can see if they have room when booking to book a second one, but you are only guaranteed 1. We choose this one. It was ok. Nice change from the buffet, but far from fine dining. I had the gnocchi (very good) as a starter. Husband had the seafood cocktail (he didn’t like it. Wasn’t a fan of the mayo sauce the shrimp were in). Doe the main we both had the pork with citrus sauce. Pork was over cooked and didn’t taste any citrus in the sauce. Potato mash tasted like it was from a box. Veggies were just ok. No dessert. SERVICE: If you are one that likes to me waited on, this is not for you. There is no pool side or beach servers. You must go to the bar on your own. There is a small bar at the beach. One bar at the pool, 1 bar the at disco (open 7:00pm to 2am) and a bar that is open 24 hours by the theater. Drinks are served in a SMALL plastic glass. So bring something for your drinks or be prepared to walk back and forth a lot. I wasn’t a fan of any of the drinks. I don’t drink beer, I’m more into fruity drinks, and they did not have any here. Their Pina Coladas were terrible. If you don’t like too much booze, make sure you tell them. They are 3 parts rum to 1 part mix. The servers are very friendly (especially Noel in the snack bar) Just don’t expect to be catered to. HOTEL: The grounds are very well taking care of. The room are far from the ocean, so the “Oceanview rooms” aren’t really that great. Yes you can see the Ocean, but very far away. Front lobby if very nice, 4 seating areas and about 8 high table and chairs to sit at. This is where you wait for transportation of to get WIFI. There is a booth for your tourist providers (Sunwing, Transtat, Air Canada. Etc) this is where you book your tours. To your right is the main buffet. You the left of that is your international A La Carte and Disco. The Disco is very small. Has one bar with a wrap around bar top. 2 pool tables and a small dance floor (maybe 6 x 6) Not much to see. In the middle there is a big booth and that is where you reserve your A La Cartes. (from 4:00-6:00pm) To the left of the lobby you will find some bathrooms and a little shop where you can buy a few souvenirs, alcohol and some toiletries and snacks. Outside of the store, there is a 24 hour bar and little patio (not very big) and beside that is the Theater. In the middle is the pool. There are 2 pools. One has the bar which has a swim up bar and volley ball net. It starts at 1.3m and gets to 0.3m at the bar. In the middle of the 2 pools is the hot tub (which was not working the week we were there) The other side has a little area for the kids and just another open pool for swimming. At the end of the pool there is the Pool side snack bar. To the side of the pool there is the towel shop and some games. There is also a little souvenir shop in the back on your way to the beach. There are 3 walkways to the beach. One on the far right leads you to the nude side of the beach, the middle one leads you to the beach buffet and bar and the far left just to the beach. The is a Tennis court behind the theater as well as a clinic, pharmacy and spa back there also. ENTERTAINMENT: During the day there is no entertainment. At 3:30pm the Entertainment crew comes to the pool, does a 3 mins dance and then leaves. 1 or 2 will stay behind and try and get a volley ball game going or some pool exercises. Don’t count on these people to have fun. Their Showtime starts at 10:00pm. They are ok. Nothing to crazy. OVERALL IMPRESSION: This resort I found had a lot of older vacationers (60+ years) which may be why there isn’t much entertainment or activities to do. We are 33 and 35 so we couldn’t really relate to anyone else. To give you an idea, I was unfortunally on that time of the month and at the store at the resort only had 1 single tampon, yet had a whole section for adult diapers. Also, I would say close to 75% of the people there were Italian. Because of this, the staff and entertainment crew spoke very little English. It made it very hard to participate in anything when you don’t know what they are talking about. It was also very hard to meet friends with the language barrier. OTHER TIPS: If you can, try and have a few CUC when you land for tips (if you like to tip) we didn’t have any until we got the hotel and exchanged and felt bad because we couldn’t tip. Advise to the women, when landing at the airport, if you have to use the washroom, make sure you have some toilet paper as there is none there.
