Staff was very good here, especially animation team. Resort is very pretty and picturesque, room are older, but kept very clean. Food was typical all inclusive. Breakfast was the best, lunch very limited, a la cartes decent. If you go on a weekend, which we did, it is you and hundreds of locals. You can't get near the swim up bar, and if you do, good luck being served. Also any games or events, same thing, taken over by locals, and your lucky to get involved. Also mostly everything was done in s[... read more]panish, so big language barrier if you wanted to understand things. The other problem was the 3 cockroaches (one ran out from makeup bag in bathroom) we saw during out stay, so being paranoid we left everything outside upon our return. Bit of an inconvenience. I will say the staff is great at make you a part of most things, so that would be the biggest positive here. If you go, I would avoid the overcrowded weekends. This is our second trip in 6 months booked with trip central, and we have been very pleased using their service. Have recommended them to many friends, and will definitely use for next booking.

Occidental Punta Cana: Great for the price
I've traveled to the Occidental Punta Cana a few times in the last 6 years and I have to admit this hotel needs some work. The grounds are beautiful, the beach is great and the staff is amazing! The rooms and food need improvement. The rooms are ok but the bathrooms need to be renovated; the toilet and bathtub need to be updated (I think they are the original parts from when the hotel was built). The food in the buffet could be better, not much selection at all. If you don't want to be bored thi[... read more]s is definitely the hotel for you, between activities during the day and the disco Mangu at night, you're sure to have a good time.
-Great Hotel, excellent room service
-Room was being painted and smelled like paint upon arrival
-Beach was not quite the greatest becasue of the sea weed
-nighlty entertainment was lacking
-DO NOT GO TO THE 60 min time share presentation.
-You will get hounded for tipping the staff and/or locals for pretty much anything
-keep an eye on your money in the safe, we seem to have lost 70 dollars and our other freinds seem to have lost over a hundred

Bahia Principe Escape Ambar: Excellent Vacation!
It was our first time in Punta Cana. We had a fantastic experience at the Bahia Principe Ambar resort. Everything was exceptional, our room was beautiful, the food was great and the staff was very friendly. The only thing that could be improved is the organization of the trolly cart that you take to the Ambar from the main lobby. After traveling all morning it was a tad inconvenient that they didn't send a trolly as promptly as we had been informed & they needed to send a second trolly because t[... read more]here wasn't enough room on the first. Bahia Principe Explore El Portillo: Amazing Resort!!
We chose this resort because there was snorkeling right in front of the resort. It was amazing!! We advised the hotel my husband has limited mobility as he cannot stand or walk for more than 5 minutes and they gave us a suite very close to the lobby. It was perfect. Everything at the resort was super clean...service was amazing. Food was great! Loved every minute...we will be back. Thank you!!

Melia Caribe Beach Resort: Great family location
Loved the grounds - well maintained and clean. The place is huge so if you are not a fan of walking then you will be segregated to one area. We were close to the restaurants and did not mind the walk to the pool and beach. Food was very good. Lots of fresh healthy selections and wide variety to choose from. The Thai place was the best! We ate there two nights in a row. Loved the Peacocks although be warned they are very loud in the wee hours of the morning. Rooms were decent - a little outdated [... read more]but in good condition. Fridge restocking was hit or miss. If you are late raisers then you will find your room is bypassed on the morning tour and might not be cleaned until later in the afternoon. Buses were a huge hit with the kids. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Did not have any experience with time share people. Pools were great - packed so get there early if you want a lounger

Bahia Principe Escape Ambar: Nice Resort
I've never done a review before but decided I would this time around. It's a bit long but, in my opinion, fair. You can be the judge.
I stayed at the Ambar side (Older side and Adults only). Overall, it was a nice resort and the grounds were well kept.
Arrival was a bit rocky as the bus dropped a bunch of us off in front of the Esmeralda and told us we would get a cart to take us to the Ambar. After waiting 25 minutes, I had to go to the front desk to inquire what was going on and only then di[... read more]d someone come shortly thereafter. I tried to inform the front desk at the Ambar of the issue and it was dismissed like no one understood what we were saying and no apology was made.
Entertainment: Since this is an adult's only side, they should have had more activities and music playing. The music in the foyer kept skipping (need new music and/or CDs) and entertainment was quite limited.
Pool: Very nice. This was the only place with music throughout the day, except when an entertainer performed in the lobby.
Beach: It had a lot of potential but the seaweed was quite bad at that time of year (June). If you weren't out there early, you didn't get a hut and/or chair. Same for the pool. When on vacation, in my opinion, I don't believe I should have to set an alarm to get up just to complete this task. Obviously, this is out of the resort's hands.
Food: In the buffet, good but not great and a bit on the cold side. Desserts had potential but, due to mass production, well you know, it didn't taste that great except for the ice-cream, jello, tapioca and fruits :). I also loved the seafood pasta station at the restaurant close to the pool. That's pretty much what I ate for lunch for the remaining three days of my stay.
A la Carte: Great experience and top notch service!! I would go back there again and only go to the specialty restaurants each night for sure. I ate at Don Pablo, El Olivio and Bella Italia.
Junior Suite issues: Liquor - I stayed in a Junior Suite wherein liquor was supposed to be provided daily, it also said so on the flyer in the room, but I had to call continuously to request same and also for soda. The phone didn't work properly (had a lot of static which I called about but nothing came of it) and had some issues with the tv.
Liquor was a bit on the weak side. Most mixed drinks tasted like medicine, except the little bottles put in your room, Kahlua, Baileys and their local rum, Mama Juana, which didn't have aphrodisiac qualities claimed but did give you a good night's sleep so that's why people dissappear.... :)
The rooms were very clean. A huge cockroach did show up to say hi, which wasn't good, but I guess you can't avoid these things in the tropics....lol (when I should be crying).
There were no mats in the room at all because the floor got quite dusty throughout the day.
Beds: Harrrrd. Even with a mattress topper, it was still uncomfortable.
Customer Service/Staff: I must say that Albania M. (front desk) was a wonderful person to deal with. She did her best to accommodate and assist in whatever way possible and her English was quite good. This is how customer service should be.
As for the staff, that's where the problem set in. At this resort, I understand that Spanish is their native language but, given that soooo many people come from overseas, I felt ignored or dismissed as they couldn't understand my requests because I didn't speak Spanish, especially the buffet and when calling the front desk. For example, I asked for gingerale and got gin and tonic (which would have been ok if I drank that). I get the impression from this resort that, if I didn't have a tip all the time, the service and follow-through lacked. Most times, I was the one who would have to call back, after quite a bit of time had passed, and usually by then they would have forgotten, so make sure you follow-up continuously.
Value: I've been at numerous hotels in different places, but I would not pay what I did to go back there. If there was a deal - perhaps.

Zoetry Agua Punta Cana: Almost perfect
If you are looking for tranquility this is the place for you. This resort has many great aspects. The food and service was amazing. Although our butler (Carlos) was not helpful the staff ( Omar and Stephanie) more then made up for his neglect.
The resort was half full during our stay June 14-21 2015. Roughly 100 guests. I believe the staff out numbered us. It has a good mix of ages. From late 20's newlyweds to coupes celebrating 20th wedding anniversarys.
The beach is good. Alot of trees on th[... read more]e beach, creating roots and twigs in the way while walking. Not a huge deal, however i have had better.
The food was amazing, many great restaurants to choose from. No reservation required or use the 24 hour room service. Being able to have full access to all the sisters resorts is a huge selling feature. You can visit any of the other 4 and have all inclusive to drinks restarants and show times.
If you want peace and quite you could not ask for a better setting. I will return one day just hope the place does not change.

Bahia Principe Explore Esmeralda: Our first time and now we're hooked!
This was our first stay at the Gran Bahia Principe Esmeralda and we're definitely coming back. The resort is clean, beautiful and just steps from the beach. It was nice to not have to take a shuttle to the beach. The two pools are big and not too busy as they are exclusive to Esmeralda guests. There's also an adult-only whirlpool in between. The buffet and A la carte restaurants are very good, but at peak times they may be under-staffed. Food selection is huge and should satisfy everyone from yo[... read more]ung to old. Casa Marina Sosua Trademark by Wyndham All Inclusive: Good value for your money
On arrival we got a dirty room and after complain we were transfered to a much cleaner room facing the beach. The grounds are gorgeous. There are two beaches and the large one seems to be calmer. The food was good with a decent selection of fruits. The entertainment was not always entertaining. There are 3 pools, but one was closed. The large pool was really nice.

Melia Caribe Beach Resort: Beautiful but less family oriented than expected
The rating I gave was based on all aspects of the resort because I dislike when I read reviews that are negative about everything when only one aspect was not favourable. So I'm going to review different aspects of the resort before mentioning our experience with our first room, which, along with the behaviour of some of the patrons, was the only drawback to our vacation.
Beach/ocean
Probably the most beautiful beach I have ever been to (including Cayman's 7 mile beach). Perfect sand. Great to [... read more]walk in, never too hot. Lots of lounge chairs. Fortunately, not too many smokers on the beach (we only moved once because we were involuntarily inhaling smoke, instead of the beautiful ocean breeze). Very safe, lots of security guards and not many beach vendors. If a breeze is blowing from the ocean you can even find a spot where you can't hear the blasting music from a pool or a beach speaker. There were some seaweeds in the shallow part of the ocean but they did not prevent me (and many other patrons) from swimming. Water was very calm and warm- my 9 month old loved it too.
Resort / restaurants
Beautiful finishes and material throughout the resort: cherry wood, marble, natural stone, onyx...The grounds of the restaurant were immaculate with lots of exotic birds. There's a train that runs throughout the resort: it's a pleasant 10 min walk from the main building to the beach otherwise. I thought that taking the train takes as much time because it stops so often.
Many restaurant options - no need to make a reservation which was great and very unlikely all other all inclusives that I've been to. We tried the American Grill, Hacienda (texmex), Thai and Dominican restaurant, all of which had decent food. The main buffet (Marketplace) had a lot of food options at all times and was my favourite. I thought the food at the beach grill (Grill Agora) wasn't as good as the Marketplace buffet but that was my personal opinion. Overall, there were so many food options that unless you have a chef at home who cooks 10 different equally delicious meals every night, you should be able to find something you'd like :)
The only downside to the restaurants was that some patrons did not care about the dress code. It would be nice if the "no shirt, no (especially wet) bathing suit, no service" policy was reinforced during the day (not fun to sit on a wet cushion at lunch time) and if people showing up with tied-up beach dresses and beach shorts at a la carte restaurants in the evening were turned away. It really takes away from the beautiful ambiance of a nice restaurant to have patrons looking like that.
Transfer from the airport/check in
A very comfortable, short ride from the airport. We had a very smooth check in, and were given an upgrade to a beautiful jacuzzi family suite, which unfortunately, was also very close to a very loud lobby bar.
Other patrons
There was a mix of Spanish, Portuguese, German and English speaking patrons (U.S. And Canada mostly). Some of the patrons were considerate, others unfortunately very rowdy which is not something I expected as we purposely booked in what we were told was the family-oriented part of the resort (not the adult-only). We had to move a few times on the beach not to hear drunk adults yelling at each other in the middle of the day. I was disappointed to see that some patrons were there for a frat party.
Our room
6034 room (jacuzzi suite) is very nice but very loud: the first night the music and loud cheering went on until 2am. We asked for a different room in a quieter section but were told that we were in a quiet area?! and the loud noise was not an everyday occurrence in the area we were in (right next to the main building). Unfortunately, it was. One night the music didn't stop the entire night and I woke up at 3 am to people yelling 'shots, shots, shots'. We eventually insisted on another room and got one for the last 2 nights. Room 4514 was not ideally situated (the first room on the ground floor of a building so everyone walks by it) but we appreciated being able to sleep for at least the last 2 nights. It is unfortunate that we were misinformed about how loud the first room was and that we did not get another room right away, it would have made a world of difference.

Zel Punta Cana - All Suites: Amazing Family Vacation
This year we decided to kick off our Summer vacation in Punta Cana. This was our second trip to DR. We opted for the Reserve Paradisus Palma Real due to the good reviews it had. We we were there from June 5th to June 12th. All I can say is that this resort is the best resort we have stayed at.
The staff is very friendly, pleasant and respectful people. They were always attentive to our requests and always made sure we had everything we needed. This resort has the best staff we've ever experienc[... read more]ed.
The food is really good. The Gabi Club buffet is kind of small, but you will always find something delicious to eat. Our favourite restaurant was the Hydro Grill next to the main and kids pool. We also tried the Aqua restaurant which has an elegant/classy ambience. The food there was excellent. There's also the steak house, Rare which was delicious. We also tried Fuego which was okay. Our least favorite restaurant was the Mexican restaurant. The food was edible, but wasn't that great.
The facilities and pools are really clean. The rooms are spacious. The rooms have the set up of a small apartment. Wi-Fi is also available throughout the resort so this is also a plus.
My only suggestion for this resort is that they need to update the reception area. It doesn't have the feel of a high end resort. Some of the furniture there needs to be upgraded.
I would like to thank Freddy for helping us with our a la carte reservations. This was truly appreciated by my family and I. I also like to specially thank Yaneira Saldaña for been such a sweet person. She always had a genuine smile to offer. And truly cared about customer satisfaction. She always made sure we were taken care of while eating at the Gabi Club. It was a real pleasure meeting her. We actually felt like we were leaving a family member behind when we said our goodbyes to her. We missed her warm smile. We really hope to see her back.
Thank you to the Reserve Palma Real for an unforgettable Summer vacation. We will definitely be back in the future

Bahia Principe Grand Bavaro: FANTASTIC
Absolutely stunning resort. Easily satisfies all types of groups including families and party groups. Buffet was great but the a la carte restaurants were my favourite! The service was great to. Dont shy away because of the size of the resort because they have buggies that run every 2 minutes to take you from the point A to point B. Also, with the size of the resort comes more things to do because everything is on site (casino, club, kids water park/pool, jungle gym, basket ball courts and a gym[... read more] just to name a few that we used). Sunscape Puerto Plata: So-so in low season
This was our second visit to Barcelo. Staff were accommodating and as friendly as our stay in 2013, however, the resort is in need of an overall sprucing up. We upgrade to the premium (adult only) section which allowed some children for whatever reason, and the poolside service, cleanliness of loungers can be improved upon. This was not an issue in 2013 Low season should not equate to lesser amenities, lesser food choices. The cost of our vacation wasn't less because we traveled in early June. O[... read more]ur room was cleaned thoroughly each day. The buffet offered less variety and much repetition however the service at the beach buffet was great and dishes prepared fresh on request. Beach vendors were a major annoyance and interruptive. Overall, it was a pleasant vacation, but we would not recommend low season.
