The accommodations was excellent. We initially were not satisfied with the cabin we were given. The water pressure was low, the water had very little hot water, and the internet reception in the cabin was non-existent. However, once customer service knew of the deficiencies, they immediately found us another room which was an upgrade to one of their premiere suites and completely satisfied each deficiency. The food was very good. The staff did their best to accommodate Canadian style of cooking.[... read more] The privileged restaurant had outstanding gourmet meals. The grounds was very clean and well kept. Even after rain storms, their grounds staff were right on every leaf, mud removed from the sidewalks. Excellent. The maid service was second to none. Always a clean room when we came back to relax in the room. (Note: sheets were not changed daily. Not sure if this is normal.)

Ocean Blue and Sand: A bit disappointing
1) Immediately on arrival we were warned by numerous guests(around 10 people) that rooms were being broken into and money stolen. We were told safes were being unlocked and items stolen, making it seem like hotel staff were involved. This immediately put us on edge and we were forced to hide our cash in our room and carry it on us as much as possible.
2) The atmosphere was great, resort was absolutely beautiful.. however there were quite a few things that took away from the beauty.. local ven[... read more]dors were EVERYWHERE. They were harassing you to buy excursions as you tried to enjoy a peaceful drink by the pool, they set up a marketplace at night in the main area beside the a la cartes.. they were very aggressive and didn’t let you walk but peacefully even if all you wanted to do was eat supper. I can understand the vendors on the beach trying to sell you stuff.. but on the actual resort was a bit obnoxious.
3) We weren’t there 12 hours before getting roped into a Premium member presentation with the promise of free stuff. They had us inside for 2-3 hours after telling us they would give us a 45 minute presentation and then give us a free welcome gift.. we were naive.
4) The beach... very disappointing in my opinion. It is pretty small but the absolute worst thing is the unbelievable amount of seaweed that you have to swim in. The resort next to us put in a net to keep the seaweed out.. something they should really consider.. the seaweed made swimming at the beach almost unbearable.
5) The food was amazing.. buffet always had great amounts of good food and the a la cartes were fun themed and delicious.. there were however certain times of the day where you were unlucky enough that all of the food places were closed. This is not something that should be acceptable.. the buffet shouldn’t be closed at all in my opinion.
All in all not a bad resort.. but for a 5 star resort I was expecting a bit more

Ocean Maya Royale: A Winner!
We just returned from our 4th stay at Ocean Maya Royale, which is a clear indication of what we think of this resort. There are so many things we like about it. The size is perfect, easily manageable on foot. As older adults we appreciate the fact that there are no children. The grounds are beautifully kept and we liked the wildlife: deer, coatis, racoons, as well as the many and colourful birds.
We found our room very comfortable and always spotlessly clean, and anything we requested (such [... read more]as a rubber mat for the shower) was promptly delivered. Both pools are well maintained, and while we didn't use the "party pool" ourselves, preferring the larger, quieter areas, we could see that it was popular with a lot of guests, enjoying a lively good time. As for the beach, there was hardly any seaweed, thanks to the workers down there, and there was good access for walking and swimming in the ocean.
Food is an important part of any holiday, and the Ocean Maya Royal did not disappoint. The main dining room, La Hacienda, offers an amazing variety of choices at every meal, something to suit every taste. We especially liked the two dinners we ate at The Blue Moon. We were really impressed by the quality of the food there, as well as the excellent service. La Dolce Vita was very good too, and we also liked the Mexican dinner at El Charro.
We cannot say enough about the staff in general. Everyone we encountered was friendly, courteous and helpful, cheerful, smiling and so hard-working! It seems their mantra is "Todo bien?", and it always was, muy bien. We would like to mention and thank some of the people who stood out for us: Sara Lopez in the Privilege Office, Agustin Lopez at the beach, Jorge Casanova and the team at The Blue Moon, Vicente and Manual and Adrian in La Hacienda. You all, along with your colleagues, made our stay very special.
Would we return to the Ocean Maya Royal? Absolutely!
Would we recommend it to others? Definitely!

Playa Vista Azul: Excellent choice!
My husband and I visited this resort April 30 thru May 11. It was an excellent choice, highly recommended. The food was excellent, the animation was great - there are lots of activities going on a the large beach and main pool and the infinity pool has a one million bucks view. There were minor inconveniences: we needed to get up at 6:30 to grab breakfast and reserve a place in the shade at the main pool or the large beach (we were told the small beach shade was already occupied by 6:00 AM). The[... read more] resort seemed full. The shower has very hot water and you need a PhD in engineering to figure it out and get some OK water. However the resort is very clean, well maintained (probably because it's new). The tennis court is on a roof, quite inconveniently located, because the balls can get lost. We liked the gym, it was well equipped and not busy at all. The a la carte restaurants were not very good, the buffet was better. We tried them all, twice. In our opinion, Privilege is not worth the upgrade (only benefits are better drinks, an extra bath tub in the room along with a sofa instead of an armchair, and a better view, plus access to a seafood restaurant). It is a great place overall and we would come back for the food, infinity pool and animation.

Hotel Roc Casa del Mar: Beautiful resort
7th time to Cuba. 1st time to Ocean Casa del Mar
Pros: Beautiful resort, wonderful staff, excellent service, lovely beach and pools, clean, good food, best Michael Jackson show I’ve seen.
Cons: Ground level pool view room not available. We’re moved into a ground level NO view room; patio door did not lock, safe/coffee machine/hair dryer did not work, loud weird noises coming from ceiling outside of the bathroom ALL night long.

Playa Vista Azul: Definitely not a 4+ star!
We stayed here for 14 days from Apr 26th, 2018 - May 10th, 2018.
The property is in a beautiful spot, and the grounds are kept up well. The rooms are not cleaned properly. The bedsheets in our room were changed after 3 days at the resort and never again. The toilet was never cleaned (by the hotel staff). The floor was mopped and the bed was made every day. We saw the woman behind the bar wipe the top of the garbage can off with a cloth and then use the same cloth to clean the bar! The cooks wo[... read more]uld drop something on the counter, and just grab it with their fingers and throw it into the buffet bowl.
The buffet is about half the size that it should be for the amount of people at the resort. Being Cuba, I didn't expect good food. That is very true. I have definitely had my share of chicken and rice.
We did not spend any time at the pools, as it seemed to be a big party all the time. Not really our thing.
A few of the staff at the resort really stood out as great hosts. Of course its not hard to stand out when the rest of them are just plain rude and constantly seem to be very annoyed that you have a question or request.
The coffee is not very good at all. If you want a decent caffeine drink order an espresso with milk. They were great.
Everything in Cuba is very expensive. It will even cost you a CUC to use the washroom at the airport!
The ocean was rough the entire time (probably just the time of year) and there were very few fish to see while snorkeling. As with anywhere, go early and put a towel on a chair at the beach or pool.
While fishing on the rocks one morning, a grounds keeper started fishing next to me and told me very aggressively to leave. I did not and luckily nothing happened.
We did an excursion to the Bay of Pigs for some snorkeling. Excellent trip. It cost 56 CUC each and we had to stop at a croc farm on the way. The croc farm was very lame, but worth the trip to Bay of Pigs.
We also hired a guide and driver in a classic car to go to Havana for the day. Our guide, Fernando, was extremely knowledgeable of Havana and the history. That trip cost 75 CUC each and was worth the trip. We saw and learned a ton about the country.
Overall, we relaxed on the beach and got away from our busy lives for awhile, so a success.
We will not be going back to this resort, we would not recommend it, and we will not be going back to Varadero.

Ocean Maya Royale: Enjoyable resort
Rooms were very nice, entertainment staff was exceptional. All staff was very friendly and helpful. Enjoyed the pools and excellent dining, especially appreciated the “ no reservation “ policy at restaurants. The buffet did not keep up with refilling the selections very well at times and the daytime construction along the walking paths was not very attractive. Especially enjoyed Hamlet, Luis, Yessi and Gustavo on the entertainment staff, the hibachi chefs, our bartender Ollie and the persona[... read more]ble staff at the Mexican restaurant

The pool was great also with some activity daily and also at night there was always something from a musical play to just music. They had vendors come in one night if you wanted to shop. Valentin El Patriarca Varadero: Just an okay resort!!
The grounds, pool, public building were all good as were the rooms. This is the worst resort I have been too, they would run out of wine or beer at the swim up bar and the mixed drinks were poor. The beach was full of debris from the ocean....not appealing. I didn't think some of the staff were very friendly even with tips. Sorry for the bad review...but us girls did have a good time.

Ocean Riviera Paradise: Very clean and nice resort!
The general area is quite nice with very friendly staff. Shops and amenities are pretty good and food generally was quite good with lots of variety. Their steakhouse and Italian restaurant was our favourite overall for dinner. Their Japanese restaurant wasn’t very good to our taste as we have plenty of very good Japanese choices in Toronto so our standard is rather high. The teppanyaki “show†was entertaining but food was salty there. Their gym was nice and the pools were good since there [... read more]are adult only pools and a kids water park as well. The beach was a bit disappointing as it had a ton of seaweed daily and a large part of the beach had rocks and uneven footing making it a challenge to enjoy it fully. This forced most people to be inside the pools rather than on in the sea.
Initially we tried to book exursions in the lobby thinking they would be the best but we found a very good quality scuba dive package from inside the resort called “DIVE IT†which was much better value. Overall a very good experience and would recommend it.

Valentin El Patriarca Varadero: Great Resort with a Perfect Beach
I spent 9 days at this resort in April and was very pleased with everything. The people were very kind, the resort is clean with beautiful grounds. The beach is amazing with white sand and an area just down a bit that has many different shells. The food was delicious in the buffet and at the 'a la carte' restaurants. Great beach and pool entertainment. I didn't go to the nightly shows so I am unable to comment on them. It is an enjoyable bus ride into Varadero because you get to see all of the o[... read more]ther resorts on your way. We had a pool view room and we loved the location. (#1415) Our chambermaid was very nice. The exchange of towels was difficult to coordinate because we went to the beach before our maid was there to change the beach towel. Minor detail, it was a great vacation in every way and the resort is great, too.

Hotel Roc Casa del Mar: Decent value for price.
May 1-8 , 2018 stay
Beach was as beautiful as expected with tons of shade available and lots of seashells to collect.
Pools were nice and good temperature.
Weather wasn't the best but May is the beginning of the rainy season in Cuba but the price we paid (under $1000 per person) was very reasonable.
Rooms were basic with hard beds and leaky air conditioners but had fantastic, large walk in rain showers. Unfortunately maintenance and cleanliness was not the best here. I believe this i[... read more]s due to lack of funds and products for repairs and I can only assume that staff have not been trained to clean outside areas. It is a shame because seeing staff walk by broken glasses and not pick anything up for several days is not nice.
There was a tourism event which included a beach party in front if the market area beside us and the next day the beach was covered with litter- especially empty plastic bags which I was told contained tshirts for attendees. Many of these ended up floating in the ocean. We picked as much up as possible but again... Sad that the workers from that event didn't clean up the mess and even sadder that tourism attendees left litter everywhere!!! Take care of the environment and the beautiful beach that Cuba offers.
Buffet- not much variety and most food was slightly warm or cold but you could always find something to eat. I found the staff were pretty good and friendly.
A la cartes- ridiculous system of waiting in line ups each day to reserve a table and I never saw more then 5 tables filled in each restaurant at a time. Menu options were very limited in every a la carte and at least 25% of items were "not available". Lol.
Drink options- poor!!! Even a la cartes didn't offer more then the basic wine, beer, a few spirits. Had no clue what a margarita even was in the Mexican a la carte.
Coffee shop was the best part of the resort and offered the best drinks.
24 hour snack bar wasn't open much at all. I guess off season means hours are dependent on the mood of the day.
Flies were bad a few days we were there. A fogged went by once each evening but clearly, this time of year requires more fogging.
Money exchange at the hotel- i exchanged money 4 times and the 2 times it was a guy, everything was fine, but there was a girl who messed up the exchange both times. Best case scenario, she's incompetent but I truely believe she purposely tried to scam me. She pushed the money at me and said thank you 3 times and was trying to rush me and I didn't go and counted that she shorted me 4 cuc. The next time, she counted the coins on the other side of the glass in piles of 5 and when she pushed it through, I started looking at it and she tried to pass off one pile of 5 coins as $1 cuc and they were actual $0.50 cuc coins. She stammered and said, oh someone put the coins in the wrong slot. However, it's odd that she counted 5 of the $0.50 coins in a pile and didn't notice. So,.... My advice is to count your money and look at each coin before you leave regardless of the line up!
Bus trip there and back- good service and drivers.
I wasn't overly happy with the resort but for the price, it was decent.

Playa Vista Azul: A little disappointed
Expected more after reading the star rating. My husband and I always enjoy Cuba beaches, but this was overcrowded and not enough shade. Also, disappointed that there was only one large pool for the amount of people. We found favoritism, if you pay big bucks you will get better drinks. I found some areas where they served water down wine. Will choose another resort next time.

Playa Vista Azul: AMAZING!
The hotel was beautiful, the rooms were perfect, the pool was great, the beaches were a bit far (the larger one) and the small beach was quite tiny and so much seaweed which was a little disappointing. We thought that would be cleaned up daily. The food was much better than expected. The staff was friendly and we had a great time. We will recommend this resort to everyone!
