The hotel, food and staff are great! The grounds are beautiful and the beaches are maintained and security is present.
Just watch out for the exchange rates in the jewelry store ( not managed by the hotel) as they quote you in US$ but charge you in Mexican pesos. This is fine but we got charged $100 US over what they quoted. Ask for the price in pesos and do your own conversion.

Barcelo Maya Beach Resort: Great resort
The beach at Maya Beach was excellent, very clean and seaweed was cleaned up everyday. There was only a little bit in the water. The rooms were a bit dated but clean. We had amazing service from all of the staff.
The a-la-carte restaurants were amazing with the exception of the Steakhouse (food was cold and service was terrible). Buffets were ok for lunch and breakfast. We tried the snack bars but food was not great.
The best bartender is located at the lobby bar and her name is Maria, sh[... read more]e makes the best drinks.
My only complaint was we had to have our room card reprogrammed over 15 times during our 10 day stay. Several guests were in the same boat as us.

Dreams Tulum Resort and Spa: Best Vacation and Wedding Ever
Fabulous holiday - 10 Days - Wedding group of 30 Family and Friends!
The Wedding info and advice at the end!
Everyone in our group of Canadians loved this resort! 04/20-30/2024 No complaints!
Everyone agreed it was beautiful and so was the beach!
The people that work there are so friendly, and at your service! They all seem to love to be there!
The food is off and on good. Never had a bad meal, but I do agree they could do better! I certainly did not starve, between room service - Omele[... read more]tte, Club sandwich, Quesadillas, Guacamole and chips, Cheeseburger and Fries, etc.
Restaurant - La Patio - Mexican - loved the Bario Tacos, and the Steak fajitas.
Restaurant - Teppanyaki - Japanese - People loved the Sweet and Sour dish, I loved the Beef Wok!
Restaurant - Portifino - Italian - We thought the Lasagna and NY steak were lovely
Restaurant - Bordeaux - our table didn't like anything, even the chicken tasted like fish, but our family at the next table served 1 hour later, and we arrived the same time, they loved their same meals.
The Steak and Lobster Tail Romantic beach dinner was lovely and Jose made it very special. It’s $350usd plus $50usd for an extra Lobster tail. 4 lovely courses, champagne etc. We were glad we did it!
The Tour that includes 4 tours in one, everyone that went said it was awesome! Including ATVing and see Monkeys, Zip Line, Cenotes - Cave snorkelling, and then 2 hot, but interesting hours, at Tulum! Best advice - pay the extra $25usd for ATV insurance. The best part everyone agreed was the snorkeling in the caves - Cenotes!
We did a 6 hour Deep Sea Fishing trip from Cancun, so 90 minute drive there and back! They said $150usd p/person, but then plus taxi, plus local taxes it worked out to @ $300 p/person, but that’s still cheap for the expierience. Take Gravol, as the waves are high, and the Diesel from the boat can be stinky! They catch the bait first, which was just as interesting, and that could have been the trip! We were lucky we caught 2 Trophy size Barracudas, over 50pounds, &56 inches! One person out of six was sick, so really make sure you are seaworthy!
The pool games are fun and loud at 12p to about 3p. If your room is the building beside the pool it can be very noisy, but we didn’t mind. At night it can be noisy too, as it’s beside the most popular bar - Sugar Reef Bar. Again, we didn't mind as it always finished right at 11:00pm
The Cocoa Cafe is lovely and the Preferred lobby and check-in is there too!
PREFERRED, was worth it to us, as we are older and have bad knees, so we could ask for anything and it was done for us. We felt like Rock stars, as my husband says! Everyone is friendly and very accommodating. Jonathan, the Preferred Concierge is Awesome, and so is Angel, the manager of Preferred! Their co-worker Angeles, and bartender Edwin were very friendly and helpful. Light healthy snacks are offered in the Preferred lounge. We will return to Jonathan and Angel - as well as Salvador on the Preferred Beach any day - WE LOVED IT!!
If you have trouble getting around, you would want to stay on the Preferred side of the resort, as they can get their golf carts down that side.
The Preferred beach is quieter, but the entrance to the ocean and the ocean floor are more difficult with rocks and shells. However, the Cabanas at $80usd per day were very nice, and more a treat for a day, as you get Preferred drinks and food and service.
FYI - I was afraid I would be very hot in general in Mexico, and that the humidity would ruin my holiday - I was very apprehensive! But the constant breeze from the ocean made a huge difference! Just stay close to the pools or ocean to stay cooler.
We will be back for sure!
I was a travel agent for 36 years, and this is, in my opinion, a well maintained, friendly, beautiful, organized, safe place to consider for a holiday! Nothing is perfect, but all the positives here, out weigh any negatives!
My understanding is that Hyatt acquired Dreams, and they have a plan to make it, and keep it at a higher standard. I think that’s why there were some negatives reviews, they may have been caught in the changeover! Enjoy! ?
WEDDING - we had Victoria as the Planner and she is unbelievably awesome! So organized and it’s like breathing to her. My DIL was very anxious, but Victoria made everything so easy, that my DIL was very calm! The wedding on the beach was gorgeous! I can’t imagine not doing it on the beach, as you are here anyways! The 4pm ceremony was perfect!
The reception was on the Sunset Terrace, which was beyond beautiful!
Perfection is all I can think of for this Holiday and Wedding at DREAMS TULUM!!!!! ! Best wishes! ??

Barcelo Maya Palace: Maya palace over premium at the maya beach
In the last year i have stayed at both the bercelo maya beach non premium and the maya beach premium oceanfront , given a choice the service at the maya palace was far superior then the beach resort. The only down fall of the palace resort is that you have to travel 3 hotels down to strikers sports bar to get drinks after 12 and food after 10 pm

Occidental at Xcaret Destination: Nice resort but has room for improvement
We enjoyed our vacation but the resort is not as good as it was last time we visited pre-covid. Rooms seem like they could use an overhaul. One of our party had a light that was broken. Our toilet needed a minor adjustment. Door locks were finicky and the balcony door didn't lock at all. We found that food has gone down in quality. Still good but it was amazing last time. Just decreases in premium items an inconsistent availability of items. Same issue with drinks. No access to top shelf brands[... read more] unless you pay royal member pricing. Last time we were able to get it by request. Last time we were able to get Victoria beer but this time only Modelo or Corona light. We had to buy Victoria off resort and bring it in.
Drinks were different at each bar. You can't order an amaretto sour at one bar and get the same at another. Bartenders were not trained the same.
We had two under 18 (15 + 16) with us and we were charged adult prices yet they were banned from adult pools even though they were better behaved than majority of drunk adults. If you are charging adult prices the adult pools should be regulated based on behaviour not strictly age. It's not like indecent behaviour is permitted in the adult pools.its purpose is to provide a pool where you aren't getting splashed or hit with balls etc. policing based on behaviour would be more fair.
There is very little for teens under 18 to do in the evenings. Since adult prices are charged there should be an effort to provide entertainment for this age group. Even the arcade was pay based and highly over priced.
Why not open the disco earlier for all ages and then move to 18+ after 11pm since it currently doesn't open till then.
Open the sports bar to all ages or provide access to games such has pool somewhere they can use.
The walking at this resort is extreme. Shuttles use to be scheduled here but this time it seems they were only available when a sales pitch came with it. Boats use to be available to the park also but now only available for the higher level resort.
These things were disappointing, but overall we had a great time. Enjoyed the park, the pools and the ocean. Staff are friendly and mostly helpful. No one went hungry and there was plenty of food items that were great. Pacos was the best, most consistent restaurant.

Occidental at Xcaret Destination: Resort is huge!
If you don't or can't walk miles and miles all day long do not go to occidental xcarat. The resort is so big that it takes to much time to get to one place to another. I also paid for a package that included a bottle of tequila and a fruit basket which I did not receive even though we asked almost everyday, we found that we had to do a lot of administrative work with Nexus. The light was out in the bathroom which we also asked to have replaced and no one came we had one light in the shower for[... read more] the whole washroom.
The drinks are sub par. No top shelf and only two types of beer Corona and Mondela so if you don't like those then don't go to this resort. We had to get someone to get us good beer from off resort. The food was good, paco tacos was amazing!
There are so many animals hanging about including iguanas of all sizes, deer, monkeys, snakes and scorpions! Unexpected scorpion! The bartender immediately took care of it for our safety. Decent place to go, it was clean but not the 5 star I was told about.

Sandos Playacar Beach Resort: It was OK...
Was excited to go back to a resort we enjoyed 1 yr ago but Disappointed. Had requested a king bed, not main floor, not poolside. They gave us the king but on main floor by the pool entrance. Told us we could pay to upgrade to a suite, declined an additional $1300 USD. Room was tired, toilet didn't flush & took 4 hours for someone to fix it. Food and drinks were good, lobby staff not helpful at all. Brazilian and Italian a la cartes best restaurants. We stayed in adult only select section. Catalonia Royal Tulum: Amazing Resort
Our trip to Catalonia Royal Tulum was amazing. The food is excellent, the resort is clean and what to say about the staff....they were ALL amazing. Le resort a su gardé un beau cachet des pierres de la sité des Mayas et de la forêt. Le pont qui relie les Villas à la piscine et buffet est simplement magique le soir.
Tout est propre et bien entretenu.

Catalonia Royal Tulum: Great resort
The resort was fantastic. Food was great. The staff is amazing and the rooms were nice and clean. I was disappointed to find out upon my arrival that the buffet is only open for dinner on Saturdays. You need to make a reservation for the restaurants and if they are all booked up you have to order room service...which sucks when you're hungry. I would have liked a place where I can go eat after 5pm. Also, I found the entertainment to be lacking.

The resort was clean and well maintained. Staff are wonderful and definitely made the trip that much better.
Staff: GREAT
Room: GREAT
Food: GREAT
Bar Staff: GREAT
Entertainment: Not so great
A la Cartes: Not so great
Beach: Not so great
Entertainment staff is almost non-existent and when they were around they really get the crowd going so I am surprised there is not more. The a la carte meals and ambiance are great but many of the restaurants are not open, or have staggered schedule[... read more]s if they have wedding parties. I did not like that you could not reserve your a la cartes. I am not on vacation to wait in a line. The beach is terrible but I didn't go for the beach so it didn't bother me in the least.
The mojito bar was so nice and a great place to go after dinner for a cocktail.
I have to say the staff surpassed all my expectations (Carlos, Bettyna, Blanca, Jose, Gio, Alex, Javier, and Camal). Thank you!

Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda: Terrible Resort
Very disappointing experience. The staff at the checkin counter did not care about the customer experience and were very entitled to say “this is what you get”. The concierge was not helpful at all. The check-in was delayed by 1.75 hrs and the room was smelling sewer with little black flies all over. We had cockroaches in the night. The vacation spirit was ruined by the staff we encountered and the smelly room. The restaurant staff were good and courteous; pool was ok; unclean beach.

The Fives Beach Hotel and Residences Playa Del Carmen: The Fives - A Family Resort
In general our family of 4 enjoyed our 2 bedroom accommodation vacation.
We did a private ATV/Snorkel/Cenote tour with Cancun Adventures booked at the resort. Would definitely recommend if you are looking for a smaller more intimate experience. Worth every penny or peso!!
Please refer to the following information that we read before our trip and paid for this "VISITAX"
Upon leaving Cancun and boarding our flight - I asked a WestJet Rep - when do we show our QR Code? He told me "It is NOT [... read more]MANDATORY". So, basically our family paid approximately $100.00 Canadian for nothing.
My recommendation - DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM...AND DONT PAY GOOD MONEY FOR NOTHING!
Canadian Passport valid for your intended stay. Entry requirements are subject to change. Visit www.tripc.ca/MXO periodically before your trip to ensure you meet the requirements for your departure date. For visitors to the state of Quintana Roo (Cancun, Cozumel, Mayan Riviera, Costa Mujueres, Tulum) it is mandatory to pay a visit tax (VISITAX) before arrival or upon arrival and obtain a QR code as evidence of payment. Please visit www.tripc.ca/visitax for cost (approximately $18.80US per person per stay), details and to pre-pay
Also: please note - if you are travelling on the weekend - the Cancun Airport is very busy, (so I was told by an official). If you have to "Bag Drop" - you will be required to stand in a que with 100's of other folks even though we had previously "checked in". This lineup took approximately 2 hours to get through. We arrived at the airport 4 hours prior to our departure. LEAVE YOURSELF LOTS AND LOTS OF TIME!!
Other than the hic-cups of Airport Travel in general - you can't go wrong with a trip to Mexico. The Mexican Culture and people are by far and large delightful.
The Fives is a great place - GO!

Royalton Riviera Cancun Resort and Spa: Great in some areas, need improvements in others.
Hotel
In terms of the hotel itself, it is nice and clean. The resort itself consist of the Royalton Riviera Cancun and the Hideaway at the Royalton Riviera Cancun (Adults only) section which are directly connected with one another. You can explore both the Hideaway and the Royalton Splash as I did not encounter anyone checking to see if you are in the right section. However, everyone is given seperate bracelets to differentiate the section that they are in. If you want lounge chairs by the po[... read more]ol or even near the pool, you have to get a towel and place it there to reserve it. If you do not, you will find that there are no chairs for you to sit in other than the very few that are out in the open with no cover whatsoever.
Food
The food at Gourmet Marche (Buffet), Hunters Steakhouse, and Taj (Indian) was above average. At Zen (Teppanyaki Grill), you are mostly going there for the show rather than the taste and quality of the food. However, you have to line up at 3:00 pm on the same day to ensure you have a reservation at at the Chef's table. Otherwise you will be ordering from a seperate menu in a seperate table. Personally, I did not like the food at Agave (Mexican) and Grazie Italian Trattoria (Their pasta was subpar but their pizzas was delicious as it was cooked in a wood stone oven). Keep in mind, the wait for your food can take up to 45-60 minute at Hunter's Steakhouse. I would recommend trying the gelato from the Scoops Gelato and Caffe Lounge as they had multiple flavours (Coffee, Mango Passionfrust, strawberry, strawberry with cream, pistachio, pina colada, lime).
Room
The beds were very comfortable due to their Dreambed mattress. Despite advertisting it, they do not refill our minibar every single day. Therefore, you have to request it with guest services in order for them to refill it. Their rooms are a bit dated in the sense that the mirrors are a bit rusty and their toliet can require multiple flushes. There is that sewer smell from the shower, but I did not mind it as it is a familiar smell in hot and humid countries.
Transportation
If you wanted to travel to downtown Cancun or anywhere in the hotel zone (Cancun), you have no choice but to use their hotel taxi which I have been quoted $65 USD one way. Uber does not work as the resort is right outside of the border of Cancun. It can get very expensive if you plan to make multiple trips to Cancun. Even if you were to try to walk from the front of the hotel to the front gates of the hotel, it would take approxiate 45-60 minutes for you to do so. The road has no sidewalks and there are signs advising you against doing so due to wildlife living in the mangroves. However, it is not a problem if you plan on staying in the resort for the entire duration of your stay.
Summary
Although the food was above average and the room itself was quite comfortable, I do not think I would return as I like to travel outside of the resort and sightsee. $65 USD for a one way trip is way too expensive and the lack of alternative transportation options to leave the resort made it feel like I was trapped within the resort.

The initial arrival to the resort was a bit of a wait.
We were able to check in but had to wait about two hours for our room. Understandable as rooms are not usually ready by 3pm, however our flight time was early and we arrived just after 1pm.

Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun: Great resort for families!
The overall experience at the resort was good especially if you have kids. This resort caters a lot of the entertainment at night towards kids. It has a lot of pools so over crowding isn’t usually a problem. There is more than enough bars and a la carte restaurants but beware not all the proper information is given at Checkin regarding reservations. The laser tag, bowling and trampoline are not included and are quite expensive so be cautious of that. The resort is only 18-20 minutes from cancun a[... read more]irport so that was great. There are a lot of drink options but it’s best to ask for a drink menu as when we asked the servers what they recommend, some were dumbfounded. Our room was great and cleaned well everyday, no complaints there. Another tip is to pay the resort tax at checkout not Checkin. The shops on the resort are not cheap and the next closest shopping would be 1hr away at playa del Carmen. It’s hot so I’d recommend bringing a hat.
The Iberostar Parisio Maya is a beautiful resort. They are extremely environmentally forward with no single use plastic anywhere on the premises. The grounds are beautifully manicured and the food is amazing. This was my 19th trip to the Iberostar and I’ll keep going back!!!
