Very clean new renovated room. Food was average and entertainment was amazing especially on VIP party night. Friendly stay. Loved the VIP upgrade on the beach. The place is large, but there is a shuttle.

Occidental Punta Cana: Great Resort
Good Hotel All around. Air Transat looked after us in every way. Lots of great side trips to suite everyone. Local hotel staff were extremely friendly and helpful . Departed from Montreal which is a little annoying at Punta Cana as the reps on the bus going to and from the airport only gave you information in French. On the other hand it did save us $200 per couple.

Emotions by Hodelpa Puerto Plata: Visitors beware
Reception service was rude and unhelpful from the moment we walked off the bus. Balcony door didnt lock and on the joining room door there was no lock to keep the stranger beside us out. Musty moldy smell and stains on bedding. Many guests rooms broken into and floods on 1st fl rooms. Clean pool and towels. Bar service wonderful and friendly. Buffet service poor, spent alot of time searching for clean cups. Food had wide variety but very questionable. A le carte food was exactly same as buffet. [... read more]There was no pizza at the beach or night snacks like stated on the resort brochure. Vendors bother every moment on the beach which was very annoying since they don't take no for an answer. Nolitour agent was uncompassionate and had few answers to our questions. We had to figure things out on our own or by asking other tourists. Internet pictures are NOT what the resort is actually like and renovated rooms have marbles floors but thats all thats upgraded. This is not a place id go again for an all inclusive vacation. Take caution when booking this report because management was horrible.

Marien Puerto Plata Hotel: Good for price
The resort is not stretched out so little walking, large beach, line up at bars which is nice so people aren't budding. Buffet was not very big but always found enough to eat (served lobster tails one night). Room was decent size and fairly clean. People were friendly. Only 20 min drive from airport.

Occidental Caribe: Great Vacation!
Overall, the hotel is very nice but is in need of continued updates which I know are taking place. I would suggest paying the extra for an upgraded room, as the older rooms are very basic and not in the 'nicer' area of the hotel. The food was great! We enjoyed the following a la carte restaurants: Japaneese, Dominican and Seafood. All were absolutely amazing; food and service! We also enjoyed the pizzaria for lunch twice, and couldn't get enough of the burgers at the pool grill...D-lish! The str[... read more]etch of beach in front of the Barcelo is one of the nicest, with enough room for lounge chairs and people to walk along the surf. The main bar opens at 8am, offering specialty coffees...with Bailey's or Kalhua and they even had clamato for Ceasars!!! Yippee!

Grand Sirenis Punta Cana Resort: Good resort for families
Overall, the resort is a good one. Service is excellent at the bars and a la carte restaurants, ok in the buffets. Food selection is good in the buffets although the layout seems to create long lines like a school cafeteria.
We all really enjoyed the waterpark. There is always lots of shaded seating available at the pool and waterpark. Have to get up early if you want shade at the beach. The beach is long and beautiful. Swimming is restricted to a smaller area due to coral. (you can swim outside[... read more] this area but it may be hard on the feet). Watersports are good. We took a kayak out on the second day of our trip but the remaining days were red flag so this activity was cancelled.
The room left something to be desired. It was clean but badly in need of renovation. There was water damage in the bathroom, several times the toilet stopped working and the hairdryer only worked on low. Also, although we requested a room by the beach / pool, we were put in the building closest to the theatre which made going to bed before the show was over at midnight impossible. Not ideal for young kids who've spent the day playing in the sun.
Best parts of this resort, Japanese a la carte, pool, waterpark. Worst, the room.

Hyatt Vivid Punta Cana: Fabulous Resort
Dreams Palm Beach was one of our favourite resorts. We upgraded to the preferred club when we arrived. Best choice we made. Service was spectacular, staff friendly and accommodating The food at the restaurants was very good. The buffet was average fare, we've had better. It was all the little details the resort does for it's guests that made it great. Will definitely try to get back to this resort or at least another Dreams!

Bahia Principe Escape Ambar: More of a 2 rating than 3
“More like a 2 than a 3â€
3 of 5 starsReviewed 3 days ago NEW
We stayed in Ambar 1 Jan 30 - Feb 13.
First the pros - beautiful beach and water for the most part. Seaweed was very bad the first few days but the remainder of the stay the seaweed was minimal.
Carlos, the assistant manager is stellar. Eddy, the bartender was a doll.
All the remaining staff were polite but reserved. Nothing wrong with that. Guess we're used to Mexico where the staff are more outgoing. With the exception of the [... read more]lobby staff, English speaking staff were rare. I speak a little Spanish but when I had an issue, I tried to conveying the problem to some of the cleaning staff and the two staff looked at each other, shared a joke and laughed.
Now the cons, and there are many.
Our air conditioning didn't work. We called the front desk three times and each time we were assured it would be fixed but it was a mediocre fix at best. Most nights I slept on the sofa under the fan.
Horrid sewage smell in the bathroom. Again we complained and the bathroom smelled like bleach so I believe they must've poured some down the drains.
Some days the minibar was filled and some days it wasn't.
Our patio door did not lock.
Some times we got hand towels, sometimes there were none and we had to call room service. Only once did we get washcloths.
One day we had half a roll of toilet paper, the next day we had 4.
We only used the tub twice as hot water was non existent in the evening. We were told that the boilers were being fixed. The last morning of our stay the shower water was so hot that it was tough to stand underneath the spray of water. We couldn't adjust the temperature.
In order to get a front row beach chair with shade you have to get to the beach before 6:30 am. The first few days were very windy so we resorted to the pool. Same issue there and plus it is some loud there!!!
Within two days my dh had tummy troubles. Being seasoned travellers we are well prepared with Imodium etc. I got hit with the same thing a few days later. It was my birthday and I spent all day in bed (and mostly in the bathroom!). All I can say is thank goodness for gravol suppositories! The rest of the trip I ate sparingly since I consistently felt off. Typically I never get sick so I thought this was telling of a resort issue. We discussed this with other guests and only ONE other couple did not have similar sick days/gastrointestinal issues. We spoke with a fellow who said two of his group were hospitalized.
This leads to the food. We are used to the all inclusive resort food so no surprise that overall the food was mediocre. Our best time was at the Sante Fe and Ambar 2 buffet. I think overall that quality control is an issue. The resort is too big and trying to serve too many people. This latter part was very apparent in Don Pablo restaurant. The food was good but we felt rushed to eat and get out as quickly as possible. The Ambar 1 buffet seemed to have a lot of flies on and around the food. And the cold food didn't seem cold enough and the hot food not hot enough. The last week I survived on bread, plain pasta and the little candies at the exit.
I believe the liquor is not premium. Oftentimes, when we asked for a piña colada they would make them without alcohol and when we asked for rum they'd add the equivalent of a teaspoon. The best piña coladas were in the Ambar lobbies. Although there is coffee in the rooms, you couldn't find "real" coffee early in the morning.
In the end we had an okay time, mostly because we enjoyed the beach and beautiful water. Would we go back? Most likely not.
We've stayed in 3 stars and we've stayed in 5 stars. Bahia Principe Ambar is not a 5 star. For the price we paid we expected better.
Room Tip: We stayed in Ambar 1 building 67 overlooking the pool. It was always quiet after 6 pm but noisy during the day

Sunscape Coco Punta Cana: “If you like to eat don't go here.â€
Check In/Check Out - if anyone can explain why it takes literally hours to check in a busload of expected guests who have to reiterate every single piece of information already given when reserving please contact me directly. The complete lack of efficiency in this process astounds me. I have travelled to 18 countries and have never been faced with this. Unbelievable. There is absolutely no need for this other than you are in the DR and at their mercy. Complete disrespect to the guests.
Room - [... read more]How does that go - Forgetaboutit. We were "upgraded" to a junior suite. Ok, so we got 2 chairs and a table that made it a suite. We called immediately upon arriving in 12205 - no toilet paper. They did bring it. The sliding door would not lock. They sent a repairman who couldn't repair it and told us someone would fix it the next day. I called the front desk and asked for a different room as I did not feel safe in a room where the door would not lock. "No rooms available". I even asked for a hockey stick to block the door - apparently ice hockey is not big in the DR! Who would have thought that:) No one ever came to fix the door. And no, it is not up to me to remind them of their inefficiencies. Isn't this what a service log is for?
Hot Water - we had no issue with this at all.
Beds and Pillows - OMG it could not possibly have been any worse.
Balcony - there are heaving tiles that are incredibly dangerous in room 12205. I didn't bother reporting them as nothing would have been done to correct the issue.
Housekeeping - I tipped our Housekeeper on Day 1 to keep lots of bottles of water in the room. Fresh towels daily, 2 rolls of toilet paper. She was perfection.
Refrigerator - did not work.
Grounds - lovely, very clean, mature vegetation, washrooms cleaned regularly. The walkways are uneven and crumbling in some places. I spend half my time in a wheelchair and it was very difficult negotiating.
Beach - seaweed can be expected but is cleaned up as quickly as possible by the groundskeepers. We had a half day of torrential rain and the beach was cleaned within a couple of hours once it stopped. For those of you who complain about anything to do with Mama Nature, I suggest you speak directly to her.
Reserved Chairs - in all the resorts I have travelled to and a couple of cruises this is standard operating procedure. I have been to a couple of places where the chairs are marked with the time the roving staff first see the towels and if the chair is not occupied in 30 minutes they remove the towels, freeing the chair. This is excellent as it illuminates those chair hogs who reserve a chair first thing in the morning and then go on an excursion.
Food - I can still not believe how bad it was. My husband has been ill for 3 days now., and we took Dukoral! The al a carte restaurants are disgusting. In fairness the Gourmet was ok - the halibut cooked to perfection but we walked out of the Brazilian and went to the buffet - at least we could eat a salad or bread or dessert. We should have done the same at the Italian. Never tried the Japanese or Mexican. The food on the buffet is substandard at best - and I have been to Cuba where the food is expected to be bad but it was better. I understand it takes a quality item to become a quality dish however I believe the Be Live is purchasing the cheapest cuts of everything and attempting to cover it with whatever comes to mind to disguise the horrendous beginning. I swear the same corn potatoes, and broccoli were on the buffet the entire week - breakfast , lunch and dinner.
Food Staff - well trained, polite, friendly, except for those who work the Brazilian/Italian restaurants (they are the same staff). Rude, disorganized, could care less about providing and service never mind exemplary service. Dirty dishes everywhere. Never offered a drink or wine. The manager of the main buffet needs to go and kick some butt down at these restaurants.
Front Desk Staff - Replace them all except for Roberta who is a gem.
Problem - we were not leaving until late on Sunday evening and were told we could spend the day on the resort and go to the gym to freshen up. Our luggage would be left in a room in the lobby where anyone could access it. No lock or guard on the door. No requirement to prove the luggage is yours. We were not comfortable with this so we were told to return on Sunday morning and if there was a room available we could pay $49.00 to have a 6pm checkout. I asked Roberta if there was please anyway to book the room as the wheelchair makes it difficult to use the gym facilities, my husband needs to help me with a few things and being able to stay in our room until 6pm would alleviate a lot of my concerns. Roberta smiled and proceeded to book the additional time in 12205 for us. On Sunday at 3pm I returned to our room and was locked out. My key card did not work. I found a phone and called the front desk and was told to come to the lobby to have the key card reactivated. I told them this is their mistake and they needed to come to me to fix it. Transferred from 1 person to another and then another and then another and then the phone just rang and rang and rang. I asked a room porter to open the door for me - no English apparently. I asked a Housekeeping Supervisor to open the door for me - "You have to go to the front desk". I finally went back to the pool and asked my husband to handle this issue - he went to the front desk. I ran into our Housekeeper (noted earlier for being fantastic) and she gladly opened the door for me. Frustrating, irritating, unnecessary. No concern at all for the guest.
Animation Team/Nightly Shows - the same standard fair in every resort in every country. Irritating, pushy, loud, minimal talent BUT - they try so hard to make sure everyone is having a good time. They are on the premises all day and then into the night. Incredible work ethic.
Photographers, Local Vendors on the property and Vacation Club Sellers - It became so irritating I finally asked my husband to respond to them in Finnish so they would leave us alone. Highly unlikely anyone there spoke Finnish - hey whatever works, right? I don't want my picture taken, I don't want to buy an overpriced, poorly made trinket, and I certainly don't want to have a Vacation Club membership.
This resort is sold as a 4 star and after 7 days we have agreed it is a 3.5 at best and I believe we are being generous. I would never recommend this resort to anyone I know.

Sunscape Coco Punta Cana: Good value resort
Be Live Collection in Punta Cana is a good value all inclusive resort. The food at the buffet was the standard that you find in most resorts. The resort has 14 separate buildings with 3 floors of rooms all with decent balconies. The rooms have air conditioning, ceiling fan over the bed, a fridge and ok washroom and tub with shower. The cleaning staff was friendly and did a nice job daily of making the bed and stocking the fridge with local beer and bottles of coke, sprite and water. The room we [... read more]had was on the ground floor with a walk out to a pool between the two buildings. The grounds were clean and looked after. The secured beach was nice with white flour like sand. The ocean was clean and warm. The main pool and bar area had lots of chairs and loungers with a nice swim up bar. There is a casino and disco on site for evening adventures. They had nightly entertainment by the pool and main bar area. There were many day trips available off of the resort to see around the island. Overall it was a good value resort.
