We spent a week at the MJR Feb 19-26 2020, great sunny week (a few clouds), beach is amazing. Never spent anytime at the pool only about 15 minutes at the quiet one. Lobby grand, could actually be a little bigger sometimes gets very crowded. Enjoyed the walking, would not be good for someone with mobility problems but that being said they had cars taking people around. Our room was nice, clean, 17203. Think the towels were only switched up once, but not a big deal. Sheets were not changed. Air c[... read more]onditioning worked really well, actually had to turn it off a few times. Never stocked our fridge for the last 4 days, disappointing. We only had issues once with the water, none for couple hours on our last night, not a big deal. The buffets were always busy, ate at the grills mostly. It was hit or miss about getting service, although we did have a few good ones in the mornings. Not a big selection of fish, no shrimp or salmon like other Cuban resorts I have been too but did enjoy the white bass and tilapia. Chicken was good, great breakfast and salads. The a la cartes not so good, I enjoyed the Oriental had salmon delicious, but husband's pork was chewy. The Cuban was terrible nothing on the menu and had substitutes for everything, we ended up walking out an d going to the buffet. The Mediterrean was not much better desert was the best. Met some great people and loved that we could visit the other two Melia's to see what they were like. Would I go back, yes it is now on my list of return resorts if the price was right.

Paradisus Rio De Oro: Nice resort
Loved our room we had a wheelchair accessible room it was in a great location close to the buffet. There was a few things I was not happy about I had to pay 100 Canadian to rent a wheelchair because they only had 1 and it was out. All the walkways are all very rough I had a cast on so I had to literally hold my leg up because the bumping hurt my foot. The food was great, the staff was very friendly and could understand and speak English very well. The walkways along the Ocean site could use som[... read more]e fixing they were doing some when we there. I found the majority of the people at this resort were over 60. The entertainment was ok. If you love the beach the water in front is all coral so you need water shoes or walk down the beach a piece to swim. Great snorkeling at this beach Unfortunately I didn’t get to. There ladders into the pool are into the water like the start of the Ladder is not on dry cement one was missing completely. It was a nice resort. It is on a cliff the view was beautiful

Melia Jardines del Rey: Nice resort
Good looking resort . Beautiful beach and grounds. Clean rooms and bathrooms . Good food especially international restaurant and Mexican . Italian restaurant not worth to try . Buffet way to busy (20 min. wait for breakfast)
Shortage of cutlery and glasses for that many people . Short on staff (nearly 2000 guests in high season) Hard to find a chair and space on the beach . Loud music in the lobby at night. This is not a place for people like me who like to relax and find some quiet moments .

Melia Varadero: R & R Vay Cay
Needed a getaway to unplug from work and other life stressors take in some sunshine fresh air get that vitiamin D we all need to endure our long cold Canadian winters. No cell phone no internet, just a book a glass of Brandy and a good Cuban Cigar and get back to basics. Walked daily ate healthy at a Fabulous Resort the Melia Veradero. I simply called my go to travel agent explained what I needed to decompress 3 days later I was off. The staff were gracious and very polite to deal with throu[... read more]ghout this resort. Rooms were clean the grounds were beautifully maintained and the beach was glorious. Now when it comes to Cuba folks are always concerned about the food, let me tell ya you will not have that issue at this resort as the food was excellent to say the least. I ran into many vacationers who are returnees to this resort probably more so than any other resort or chain I have vacationed at over the years. I now know why as I will indeed be returning and bringing my family to experience this Melia Resort. So Melia Veradero get ready for another happy traveler who will now become the next traveler to become a multi return visit vacationer. I would like to put a special shout out to 2 staff in particular that work at the main bar the lovely bartenderness Seniorita Fatima who's happy demeanor and infectious smile makes you feel like you've known her all your life. And lastly Luis Miguel a young eager to insure all his table serve customers are happy and feel welcomed yet not overbearing just genuine charismatic personality. As a business man who has hired over thousands of employees this young man has potential to be a valuable asset to the Melia Team whom I would not hesitate to invest training to see the heights this young man can obtain. Melia Veradero I thank you for a providing me with one if the best Vay Cay I've ever had. I say Cheers to all the Melia Team OUTSTANDING !!

Melia Las Antillas: Great Vacation!
Not only was this our first trip to Cuba, it was our first vacation at a down south all inclusive in over 17 years. We were not disappointed. Everything we had heard and read about the friendliness of the Cuban people was true and more! The staff at the resort all go out of their way to make you feel special and welcome - Jorje, Colon, Clemente to name just a few, and our housemaid Aimee was a total delight. The resort is attractive and clean. The beach area is amazing. The pool is wonderf[... read more]ul, and the animation staff do a great job keeping everyone entertained. We especially enjoyed the live entertainment at the roof top patio before the main shows each evening. Loved the water ballet. Can't comment on the other main evening shows as we did not go to see them. We were pleasantly surprised by the food as we had heard so often that "the food isn't great but everything else is in Cuba." It certainly did not compare to the food on the Alaskan cruise we did last year, but we did not expect it to. But the food certainly did compare to what we would make and serve on a regular day at home as we certainly don't cook 5 star meals 7 days a week at home! The breads, cheeses and charcuterie were great. I had no problem building myself a nice salad with the fresh greens and vegetables on offer and there was always some fruit (though not the variety at home) and there was ice cream! The omelet station was great. There was decent variety in the meats, fish and sides (it helps that I really do like rice and beans and their typical cuban version is really good). The only negative I could say is that the "hot" items were sometimes just barely warm by the time we got to a table to sit down to eat. The spanish wines served at lunch and dinner were quite good.
The buildings are nice, but not spectacular or particularly opulent. That suits us just fine. We loved the location of our room in one of the smaller buildings as our balconey was always in shade so we always had somewhere to go for an hour or so when we needed to get out of the sun. The room is large, with a nice sunken living area included. My only complaint would be that the bathroom is very dated and really needs to be refreshed with more modern fixtures and decor - it really felt like an old bathroom straight out of a 1940's roadside motel.
We did two day trips, the Havana trip including dinner and show at the Tropicana, and the Jeep Safari tour. Both were great and allowed us to learn a lot about Cuba, it's history, and it's current way of life. We only wished we had taken along some items for the children on the Jeep tour as the kids ran to the roadside to wave at us as we drove through the small villages. Along that vein, yes, if you're going to Cuba by all means tip regularly with CUCs, but also bring along some of the goods that are in short supply there - they are very much appreciated. In all likelihood we will be back in Cuba someday, but probably at another resort, just because we prefer to not go to the same place twice. We did notice that many people do return over and over as evidenced by the hugs and greetings from staff when some new guests arrived. We did thoroughly enjoy our time at Melia Las Antillas and I'm sure you will too!

The property itself is well maintained and quite lovely.
The pools are large and fabulous.
Thats were its stops.....the food is less than mediocre with the same 8 items repeatrd 3 times per day. Breakfast had the addition of eggs. The ala cartes have wonderful menus .....unfortunately none of this food is available.....pork or chicken unless you wish to pay 30 cuc for the overcooked lobster.
The bar and wait staff are very professional...at avoiding you and eye contact.

Melia Las Dunas: Beautiful beach!
Just got back from a week with my 3 kids... we had a nice time. The resort is pretty well maintained for Cuba. There was lots of food and if you hunt around, there are some pretty good options. Service was good - but I tipped at each buffet, bar and daily for housekeeping so think we got a little extra love for that! :)
The beach was beautiful - you could usually get loungers which was nice. Did three of the a la carte restaurants - Latin, International and Mediterranean. All the items [... read more]on the menu aren't always available but food there was generally very good.
Didn't really spend much time at the pools as we are beach people - but they seemed nice when we popped by.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Beautiful resort but needs some work
Lovely resort but showing a bit of wear and tear, videos and pics are misleading. They showed the royal section which is only available if you book it, otherwise you are on the crowded side of the resort. Room was clean and chambermaid was lovely and always greeted us with a smile. The room was musty when we turned on the AC. The bathroom fan was broken. But otherwise quiet The sand fleas /no see ums were horrendous, I counted 150 bites on one of my husband’s legs and he had to visit the hospi[... read more]tal upon our return. 1 month later and we still have signs of the bites. The beach is gorgeous, no aquatic life so don’t bother with your snorkeling gear, but don’t forget bug spray and wear it at all times, as the resort doesn’t appear to fog or spray. So stay off the grass as the bugs hide out there. This is my 10th time to Cuba so I am not new at this but I have never seen bug bites like this in my entire life. I enjoyed the entertainment and had a great time at the piano bar for karaoke the lovely lady who plays the piano and sings is great, so were the guests that sang. The food was alright, no complaints, it’s Cuba not Mexico. Occasionally the odd bar would run out of things like tonic water etc so they need to refine their supply chains. The 24 hour had no food one night, how does that happen? All in all the weather was good, most of the staff we encountered were kind and helpful, but varadero is just different compared to guardalavca where we have been in the past.
I spoke to other Guests who had been there previously and noted that things have gone down quite a bit. If they fixed everything up along with supply issues maybe fixed all the facilities and make use of all the empty hot tubs around the resort it could go up a star rating but it’s definitely not 5 perhaps 3.5 star
The royal section is lovely and so are the pools but I wouldn’t pay what I paid To return. If you get a good deal then go, but make sure your room is what you paid for, my friend had to switch 4 times because things just didn’t work or were broken.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Not a 5 star.
First let me say this, the staff for the most part are wonderful. Now onto the not so goods. Our first room from the moment we entered smelled like mold. Not musty, not mildew but mold. Signs of it were throughout the main room and bathroom. Spent one night in that only to be awoken by what one would think was an earthquake. Umm no, our bed broke! Went to front desk and spent a few hours sorting that ordeal out. Finally ended up in a room with 2 twin bed which we pushed together for the [... read more]remainder of our stay. The grounds were not maintained as well as they should've been. The hot tubs weren't working. One had water in it for who knows how long. Ran out of towels for our rooms and got some the following day. Having been now to what I was expecting to be a 5 star top notch resort, I'm saddened to report it is not. I sincerely hope they correct this and regain their status. If you expect 3.5 to 4 then you'll be satisfied. I feel we paid too much for what we received.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Another wonderful visit
This was our 10th trip to Cuba and our 5th visit to the Paradisus Princesa Del Mar. We have another wonderful vacation. The weather was fantastic and we had a lovely ocean view in the building we had requested. It was wonderful to see old friends, such as Liuba, Diane and Luisa who served us during breakfast and lunch. We enjoyed catching up with Yusmila in the piano bar and we had 2 incredible meals cooked by Evelio at the Sakura Japanese Restaurant (one was the teppanyaki style and the other w[... read more]as a personal sushi dinner for the two of us). He has served us every visit and he puts on a great show with delicious food. We ate at several a la carte restaurants and some were better than the others. We enjoyed the Japanese, French and Cuban. The buffet offers a large selection so you will never go hungry! The only disappointment was the lack of wine. We could buy wine at the restaurants but there was no house wine available. We did not like that we had to pay at an all-inclusive but this was a small detail. Our room was always clean, and one night we did not have clean towels, as they had not been delivered, however as soon as they arrived the house keeper brought them to our room. The staff at the resort is incredible. They are always smiling and ready to assist you. You will never have to wait long for any service. The resort is clean and the beach is really nice. We never had an issue finding a great spot on the beach. This was our first time in February as we normally go in April. There was more sea grass than normal but it never bothered anyone. My husband and I always recommend this resort for a relaxing adult’s only experience. We look forward to our next trip to this resort.

Paradisus Rio De Oro: Stunning!!
This resort was by far the best we've been to. We were a little sceptical going to Cuba, as this was our first trip there, but wow were we wrong. This resort has an amazing beach, lush mature grounds that are extreamly well maintained, friendly staff, quiet when you want quiet relaxation but still fun and full of entertainment when you want it.
I would 100% recommend this resort. We cant wait to book again for next year.

Melia Marina Varadero: Not good
Everything was in poor condition. Cracked tiles on grounds. Food didn't seem to be replenished during meals when they were empty. Specialty restaurants had very slow service. A lot of things on the menu were not available. Seemed to have run out of wine late in the week. Coffee in room was only replaced once and there was no sugar or milk. I have been to Cuba a number of times and this was the worst resort I have stayed at.
