Memories Flamenco Beach Resort: Just wow!
This was an amazingly clean resort with extremely friendly and helpful staff. Food was not like the typical Cuban fare you would expect, it was like being at a high class Toronto resort. Tons of seafood, tons of everything! My room was immaculate. The toilet didn’t work a couple of times, but was fixed so quickly each time I notified the customer service people. Though it was really busy, there was always lounge chairs at the beach and by the pools. And the entertainment staff were so much fun-p[... read more]eople were dancing in the pools. And it was half an hour from the airport and there was no snow!
Would highly recommend.

Paradisus Varadero: Run down
As usual the beach was the only good thing about this resort -- the grounds are run down and it is very large so expect lots of walking. The description of the resort is not what you will experience - most restaurants and buffets are closed; there are no water sports or options for same. We paid extra for the "Reserve" area and it was not worth it - no extra amenities as listed. Our room was a very basic two double (not queen) beds and a pull out couch which was on the floor. We had no hot w[... read more]ater - not even warm for the first 4 days out of 7. Toilet paper is in short supply so bring your own. Nightly entertainment was usually just few dancers. It was a very quiet resort with basic services. I was expecting bad food but the food is absolutely horrendous with limited options and the same food for every meal. The only "snacks" available every day is french fries and a bun with cheese on it.

Dhawa Cayo Santa Maria: Serious need to improve!
This was our 3rd time at the Dhawa and probably our last unless major improvements occur. We are all aware of the food shortages in Cuba and went very well prepared with food and snacks. However, this time was beyond acceptable. We arrived on a Thursday and were about 100 guests. Friday morning the occupancy doubled as Cubans came to spend the weekend at the resort. The variety of food was nonexistent and the food would disappear immediately as locals would be taking portions big enough fo[... read more]r five or six people. Now don’t get me wrong, we all know how difficult it is for them so it is very difficult to blame them for this, however the staff admitted to us that they were limiting the amount of food at the buffet for that reason but what about Canadians who paid good money to be there? It’s like the saying goes, they are biting the hand that feeds
them. After the weekend, we were down to about 60 guests and they closed the buffet for dinner, only leaving the a la carte restaurant with 4-5 meal options. Due to the low level of occupancy, there was no entertainment during the day and for the 9 nights we were there, they had a couple of musicians in the evening for an hour but the rest of the time was simply a fashion show. The sad thing is that they don’t seem to realize that whether they have 60 guests or 500 guests, they should commit to still providing entertainment.
The positive of this resort is the staff, the beach and the size of the hotel, as it’s very small and making it convenient to get from one place to the other

Playa Vista Azul: Delightful Resort
The grounds were well-maintained and the washrooms mostly clean. Knowing that toilet paper and paper towels are of a shortage (having been to Cuba once before) we came prepared and stocked with these. Food was fairly good but lacked flavour. The A La Carte restaurants served some delicious meals however. The staff were all very attentive and ensured that we were well looked after for every need. The beach was fantastic and staff assisted with lounge chairs, drinks etc. The pools were wonderful[... read more] and the excursions fantabulous. Playa Cayo Santa Maria: We loved our 2 weeks at Playa Cayo Santa Maria!
This was our 2nd time at Playa Santa Maria and I have to say this was the best 2 weeks we’ve spent in Cuba since we started coming in 2017! We have found a place that we will be looking to come back to.
First thing is that we noticed many improvements since our first visit in 2023 from the grounds to the furniture in the lobby and beach to the food (to be fair the food is really based availability and situation in the country at the time) but we had no complaints here. Claudia Cruz Sanc[... read more]hez (from customer service) was pivotal in helping us make this vacation so enjoyable and special (from helping us with reserving a room that accommodated our wishes, to reservations at the restaurant to just being there to answer any questions we had0. We also got to enjoy her company a couple of times where we had to opportunity to sit down and get to know her a little more (this kind of thing makes our time feel more meaningful as we get to know people at a more personal level). Also a mention goes out to Yaidelis Calvo Reyes for also keeping on eye out for us.
Our favorite restaurant was the Italian - especially the cannelloni and ice cream cake!!! We also really enjoyed the Hamburger/Pizza place for lunch (reservations required). We had the chance to attend the repeat customer dinner which did not disappoint - the food (salmon and steak) was delicious and we enjoyed the live music while overlooking the ocean. The snack bar offered omelettes in the morning (with cappuccino) and always had nicely done grilled sandwiches with fries for an alternative to the buffet or as a snack. The morning we left the resort (at 6am) they quickly prepared sandwiches for us to have on the bus as the buffet wasn’t opened yet. Thanks to Claudia Cruz Sanchez and to Lauren for making the reservations so easy and accommodating our requests.
The buffet always has a good selection and we found more than enough of everything to eat. What made the experience of going for meals exceptional was the staff - at the buffet we met so many (unfortunately I don’t remember everyone’s name) wonderful people that made us feel so very welcomed and taken care of: Leo, Abel Raul, Ybel and Mario. There were so many others that always had a smile and hello for us that I am not mentioning that deserve our appreciation as well.
The hotel had a nice variety of drinks available from Spanish coffees (lobby) to Marguerita’s (beach bar), crème the menthe and gin and tonic. They always offered wine (red, white or rose) at all the restaurants and buffet.
Our room (a suite overlooking the ocean) was lovely. Bright and airy with lot’s of room. Yes the paint and furniture is a little dated but everything was functional and clean. The air conditioning kept us cool although during the afternoon it was nice to have the patio door open and let the warm breeze come through. The only thing that needed repair was that our 2nd toilet had problems flushing (thankfully we had 2 toilets available in the suite and were able to just flush the 2nd one with a bucket of water). Otherwise the room was great. Lot’s of closet space and storage, a table, chairs, couch, fridge, nespresso coffee maker (we brought our own pads that we got at Walmart - regular size pods worked perfectly). Our chamber cleaners Alfredo Vazquez and his lovely wife Mildrey were always there to give us anything we needed (toilet paper, bottles of water, extra towels) as well as just always being there with a hello and smile. There is a safe in the room (no extra cost) and internet always worked well - you get a code at your arrival and this stays the same for your whole visit - no limits on time and no cost. Then internet even worked at some part of the beach!
I had the opportunity to have a relaxing massage with Yasmani at the spa - the area of the resort is just so relaxing with the zen music, small garden with chair and little pool which I enjoyed very much.
The beach has a new boardwalk and stairs making it easier to get down to the water - there is a little edge that you have to climb down - very manageable from many areas but the new stairs are a nice addition (I would only say that the last step down is quite high - maybe the sand has eroded away making it such a big step). The beach itself is gorgeous - we swam everyday and walked both sides of the beach - we never reached the end on either side. There was always chairs available for us both at the beach and the pool.
The entertainment staff was great (we usually are pretty quiet during the day) but could hear the activities on the beach in the morning and at the main pool in the afternoon. But we really appreciated the variety of the many different musicians that came through and played in the lobby late mornings and evenings. From solo musicians to larger groups (thumbs up for the group Septeto Atabey). We were so fortunately to be there at this time as the hotels on Santa Maria have just started organizing a weekly cocktail at the Plaza La Estrella on Thursday nights for Canadians. This was such an enjoyable evening - we absolutely recommend it. All free - a bus picks you up at the lobby and returns later in the evening. At the plaza there is live music, dancing, shows, food (plenty to snack on for supper) and drinks going on from 7 to 11pm. This was one of the best evenings we have ever spent in Cuba so far!
We also took a day trip on the $5 bus out to Playa Las Gaviotas which is a natural protected reserve at the end of the island. Well worth the trip out there. Note there are no facilities so bring along what you will need (towels, water/drinks, snacks, shoes, sunscreen). You pay a $5 entrance fee at the gate and walk down a trail for about 10 minutes to one of the most beautiful pristine beaches we have even been on.
We also used the tennis courts to play a little pickleball - which was a nice thing to do earlier in the morning (we brought our own balls and rackets).
In summary, we really enjoyed our 2 weeks at this hotel and we look forward to coming back here again in the future! The resort filled all our needs but getting to know the staff made it so very enjoyable.

Memories Caribe Beach Resort: Friendly Staff
I've stayed at this resort twice, the first time was 5 years ago and it was your typical Cuba experience, basic (but good) food, beautiful beach, friendly staff, the best coffee and barista you will find. I had the same guy both visits, you will probably find him behind the counter if you go there. Tell him "Americano and latte" say hi!
There was a noticable decline in what they can offer, the shop was almost bare, the a la carte options are down to one a visit unless you purchased the premium [... read more]package, and the alcohol options were more limited without the premium package. Toilet paper was hit or miss, you had it in your room but the public washrooms only sometimes. We knew this and brought our own but didn't need to.
The resort itself is dated but clean and they certainly do the best with what they have.
My only real issue was the sand fleas, they were not an issue on my first visit but definitely on the second.
Oh, and nothing to do with the resort but a shout out to the smokers, can you just not in public places...including beaches? Nasty habit that affects everyone around you, it's just rude.

Sanctuary at Grand Memories Holguin: Great Value!
We just came back from this resort. We have stayed in block A on the Sanctuary side, February 11-18. We did not have Primium. AC worked fine in our room. We don't like it too cold, so we only had AC on when we were out of the room. I went swimming in the ocean at least 3 times a day, and we spent most of our time on the beach, not by the pools. The beach is beautiful and clean. There is a team with a tractor raking the beach and removing the weeds and garbage at least 2x a day. There was plenty [... read more]of food and drinks every day. No problems with anything for us. The room, the hotel, and public bathrooms are very clean, and you can see the stuff working and maintaining all of this all the time. Tipping is important. We had mostly CAN 20, 50 bills. They will gladly exchange CAN coins they have for your bills, and then you tip with the coins:). I think we've spent ~$300 CAN on tips + we brought some gifts.
All was excellent, especially for the price we have paid.

Grand Aston Cayo Paredon Beach Resort: Wonderful getaway
It was a wonderful getaway. The resort itself is beautiful, featuring a long beach ideal for leisurely walks along the shoreline. We were pleased to find the grounds exceptionally clean, with stunning blue waters perfect for swimming. The pools were well-maintained, and we appreciated the ample shaded areas, allowing us to relax comfortably.
One of the highlights of our stay was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff. We arrived with modest expectations regarding the food and drink off[... read more]erings, but we were pleasantly surprised. The dining options catered to a variety of tastes, and we particularly enjoyed the à la carte restaurants, although we recommend booking well in advance as they tend to fill up quickly.
The pizza served on the beach, while simple with just sauce and cheese, was delicious and cooked to perfection in their firewood ovens. However, I noticed that many guests were lining up to take multiple pizzas at a time, which limited availability for others. To enhance the experience, it might be beneficial for the resort to implement a ticketing system for pizza orders based on party size, allowing for a more equitable distribution and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to enjoy it.
We also enjoyed the excursions available, which were quite fun. However, it is worth noting that the resort is somewhat isolated from local towns, making it a bit of a trek to reach various excursion points. This is an essential consideration for guests looking to explore beyond the resort itself. The jeep excursion that navigated through small towns, providing insight into the daily lives of the Cuban people. This journey really began at a farm where we learned about cultural practices related to the harvesting of fruits, honey, and coffee. I highly recommend this experience. The catamaran excursion was equally enjoyable. We truly enjoyed our time at Grand Aston Paredon and appreciate the efforts made by the staff to create a memorable experience for all guests.

Paradisus Princesa Del Mar: Wonderful time/great people
I really enjoyed by stay there, the people were amazing and the grounds were beautiful. The only down fall I found was that the patio furniture was metal and it was rusty and that could become a health hazard. I also thought that in the future they could maybe add a boardwalk from the beach snack bar to the beach area as a person with walking disabilities found it quite hard to manoeuvre.

Grand Aston Cayo Paredon Beach Resort: Lovely resort experience
The grounds and resort were beautiful and well kept. The staff were super friendly. Our "waitress" housekeeper was so helpful in language translation and helping us with a little trouble we had. We had dinner at the Italian and Brazilian restaurants and made my birthday very special. The Air Transat liaison was so informative and helpful. We stayed by the pool as the beach was windy.
