Not a 4 star

When I stayed at this resort in 2015 it was a 4 star but since then it has become really run down. The beach, location and some staff are the only good things and I will not return to this resort unless they do some major renovations!

Old

Very old place. Only the price was right . Need repairs/ painting. Very unusual lobby, not enough places to sit especially when the weather is cold and windy. Not enough towels,beach towels, umbrellas. In the main restaurant there were always line up because cooks were very slow . Food was bad specially meat. Was scary to see the way staff did't change utensils after people left and they prepare for the next. They just left unused one(in their view unused) on the table for the next.

Good Resort

Close to beach great !!!! This was our second time staying there we found the food was not good always found something but they need to improve on that . Staff always wonderful polite helpful the buildings need a little upgrade The lobby bathroom needs constant attention !!!!!! But love the fact close to downtown not big at all as a resort There was always enough chairs at beach and pool. LIke I said just improve the food a little Would I go back to this resort Yes !!!!

You get what you pay for

This resort is what you can expect for the cost you're paying. The first 10 minutes after checking in, we had immediate issues. The toilet wouldn't flush. The housemaid was amazing had called to have it fixed, which it was immediately. Later the same day as our arrival, our door wouldn't close! I was stuck in the room for an hour waiting for some to show to fix it. This was incredibly frustrating. I had asked to switch rooms, but they told me it wasn't possible as it was at capacity. The door wa [... read more]s so warped that the wood was rotting. They temporarily fixed the door for us. A few days later we had a flood in our room as the house maids were mopping the floors in the hallway and everything poured into our room!! Easily cleaned up, but again, annoying. And clearly the problem with the door. The TV in our room didn't work, in fact we didn't even have a remote for it! We went with friends and they didn't have any of these issues, so maybe we just had some bad luck. The beach was closed due to rough waters and jelly fish being washed up on shore for the whole week we were there. The pool was freezing cold and you couldn't even go in. The drinks are extremely strong, which can be great for those who love to drink, but I like to take it easy and have multiple drinks all day. The entertainment was amazing!!! Highly recommend going to the shows!! And the staff at the resort were amazing as well, however I found the front desk staff slightly rude. I'm sure they deal with a lot,but it's your job! When you arrrive to you room you receive 3 bottles of water. This is to last you for the WHOLE week!! 3 bottles. When I asked to have more water they told me I had to BUY it! Are you kidding me!!! They advertise they have wifi... which you also have to pay for. We did pay for it, but it wouldn't work the whole time we were there. As I said before you get what you pay for. I would definitely not say this is a 4 star but rather a 3 star at best.

Nice resort.

The rooms were nice. The food was, well it was Cuba. But we didn’t starve. The staff were very friendly and courteous. The grounds are nice. Not too big but not what I would consider a small resort.

Run down

Ground floor and second floor rooms are not suitable for rental (black mold, rot, humidity and sewer smell etc). After many requests, we were finally moved to a better room two days prior to our departure. This resort definately needs some tlc and it is certainly not a 4 star.

Resort review

The resort was clean and the grounds were well kept. The building itself was dated but the bathrooms were upgraded. The staff were friendly. The food was good by Cuban standards but the buffet food was not hot when it should have been unless you got it off the grill. There was usually a good assortment of choices. The bread was amazing. The beach was beautiful and clean. This is good value for the price but because the price is so good there were a lot of young people partying until late into th [... read more]e night and they were not considerate of others in the resort so it was difficult to sleep some nights because of the noise.

You get what you pay for

You only get what you pay. If you want a 5 Star Hotel then pay for it. My wife and I stayed at Playa De Oro from 11 Jan. Until 18 Jan. This was our 8 trip to Playa de Oro. As before we had a good time. The weather was not the best, but we cannot blame the hotel for it. The hotel was recently sold and is now called Playa Varadero . We noticed no changes to the overall enjoyment of the hotel. The people are still as accommodating and friendly as before. We arrived via Sunwing and for a ch [... read more]ange there were no last minute changes to our flight schedule. We arrived in Varadero at 1000 HRS. And arrived at the hotel at 1230HRS. Having been there before the greeting by the staff was outstanding. Check in was smooth and efficient. Our assigned room was on the 5 floor with an outstanding view. The room was dated, but clean. Our maid left a welcoming note in the room on our arrival. The food is as good as in any other 3 or 4 star hotel in Varadero. The food at times is on the warm rather then the hot side in the buffed. There is plenty for everyone. After the first time you eat and leave a tip you will find your seat is reserved for you by the waiters. At noon we normally ate at the beach restaurant. The food there is barbequed fish, chicken and pork, as well as potatoes and other vegetables. The nice thing for repeat visitors again you are known and appreciated. Here is a tip for picky eaters. If you eat at the beach restaurant at noon and for supper at the buffet you will have two different types of food. Barbeque at noon and Buffet food at night. The beach is a dream beach with many beach chairs. The hurricane damage in the resort and on the beach is mostly repaired. They have people available to put the chairs out and clean them; naturally a small tip goes a long way. The only drawback the toilets are in the pool area. Entertainment is amble for anyone who wants to participate during the day. The entertainment staffs are a cheery and happy bunch. The main attraction for us is the live band that plays for lunch at the beach bar and in the evening for one hour for dancing. The main show starts at 1000HRS and is the best you will find anywhere in the Caribe. The entertainers rotate from hotel to hotel so you will see them at any hotel in Varadero. The grounds are kept clean and lush with any flowers, fruits and birds you want to see. The pool area again needs some work to be done. There are plenty of beach chairs and it is usually not necessary to get up early to reserve a chair. Repeat customers are treaded well with a bottle of rum, chocolates and beer in your room. To top it all off you will get a monster lobster dinner for two with live entertainment. As for stealing. The only people that steal are tourists. Any Cuban working in the hotel is lucky to work there, they get tips, and Canadians are usually very good in giving out tips if the service warrants it. Naturally you are in the tropics with animals moving around freely. No seen flies are sometimes a problem and it is wise to bring some repellent against them In conclusion if you have any problems that are not looked at in a timely fashion see the customer service manager, he will sort it out. Great staff

I had a great time consider the weather it was a great stay. Staff was nice food was good and beach was amazing I would go back again. It is close to alot of great places to visit and close to the air port

Great value. Amazing people

I enjoyed my week at this hotel. For that price its a great value. The doors did not close perfectly. The showers are a bit old. The rooms could be redecorated but i am not going to cuba for those reasons. I was going mainly for the amazing people and the service they deliver. For the amaing beach and the nice weather. So i was not disapointed. I have been to this hotel 3 times and i have no complaints for the price i paid. I will keep very good memories from piña collada made by adam at the bar. Great mojitos from laysie at the bar and good care of my room by milady. Resort was fine

Resort was great stuff was great had no problems with the resort itself food was very good only problem was the young people from Quebec they wouldn’t stop partying till six in the morning Lifeguards on the beach were extremely helpful with any problems especially Victor

Cuban home away from home

This was our third stay at Muthu Playa Varadero formerly called Playa de Oro. Again we enjoyed the resort, the staff and we will be back. The resort is small enough that we feel at home yet big enough to provide everything we are looking for. The only issues we had this trip was the long delayed plane with very limited information at the Varadero airport ... we also upgraded our seats to Elite Plus but we're disappointed when the description did not meet what we actually received ... overall we  [... read more]had another great vacation

Fine for a few days

We spent 5 days here last week and had a good time. We had rooms on the first floor looking to the sea so a good location, very quiet. No mold but peeling walls, in need of paint and furniture repair, and one room had no hot water at all. The fridge worked fine and we had sufficient water bottle supply. Beds were comfortable if old. The staff are wonderful, especially Tony, Mirabelle and Ironeida at the buffet. The grounds are kept clean, the entertainment was great, food as you'd expect. 5 [... read more] days of fish, rice and salad. Didn't want to try anything else. The beach is gorgeous. For the price it is fine, but I'd rate it a 3 star not 4 for Cuba and for a longer trip I's say pay the extra for a 5 star, mostly for better food. If you're heading there bring along some black pepper and hot sauce. The Cuban a la carte was good but the Italian was horrible. The coffee bar was excellent.

Ok resort

Playa de Oro needs a good renovation through out, hotel is very outdated not enough washrooms through out the resort. Great Stay

Playa De Oro was a great place to stay, friendly staff and very accommodating, and the food wasn't all that bad. AC was leaking in first room so they moved us to a new room as soon as possible. Bar staff made sure all patrons were served with a smile.

Good value for the price

Pool area and beach are very nice. The rooms and facilities are in need of some updating, but are kept in a very clean state. The staff work very hard on this. The grounds are still recovering from the hurricanes, but are fairly maintained. Food was what you expect to get while in Cuba, but good considering. We enjoyed our stay there and would have no problem going back there again!

Another great time at your resort

This was my second time at your resort, great room, amazing staff and truly a great trip...The hotel is not too big or small, perfect fit for me, I arrived Christmas Day, the resort was about half full and as the week progressed it filled up and leaving New Year's eve it was completely booked, but my service was still the same, not waiting. Thanks so much to the staff.

A resort you should try to avoid

The lobby restroom is disgusting! Beach live guard is never on the high chair, but busy in selling cigars! And unbelievably, my feet was badly cut in the swing pool. No medical assistance at all! In general, resort staffs are very nice. The tennis court is clean. I can't believe this resort is rated 4 stars even unofficially.

Need Maintenance Resort

All grounds, public area and rooms need maintenance work.The first day the safe did not work (lack of batteries), no hot water, we had a leak from the ceiling and had a big black cockroach in the room. All of this during a 4 nights stay.

Nice hotel. What you would expect of a 3.5 star

The hotel itself is older but they continue to spruce it up. Layout of property was excellent. The beach volley ball nets are in excellent condition and very solid. The beach of course is beautiful. The pool and deck area are very well maintained.
