Melia Cayo Guillermo Feb 27 to March 5 2016

First trip to Cuba and didn`t know what to expect. It is a bit of a drive to the resort and the resort caters to the elderly and families. Staff were wonderful, therooms were clean and bug free, and there was plenty of food. The dessert bar was amazing with lots of variety! Depending on the time of day and clouds, the water was a different colour every time you looked at it! Lots of beach chairs and easy to find a free one. Only minus was the water pressure was very low so try to shower at off times if you hope to wash long hair!

Great Resort

Great resort very clean and everyone very friendly. Food was pretty good. The only thing was most days when everyone went for a shower at the same time there would be no hot water. Surprisingly never got bitten by mosquitoes.

Quaint and Quiet- Just what I needed

This resort is quiet and good to relax and enjoy the weather, beach and pool areas. Food is good and property is well groomed. The public areas and our room was clean and the water was hot. It's a good resort for adults which worked for us. If you have kids I don't think much to do other than the beach and pool, not a lot for kids to do.

Melia Where?

Trip changes ta the last minute by the wonderful people at Transat. No problem with that considering the Melia CG were having air conditioning issues (AKA AC not working so well). Melia Garden Del Rey was a suitable replacement thyough Transat offered few options.

A relaxing vacation

Our stay at the Melia Cayo Guillermo was a relaxing one. Though it was almost full, the spread out design of the resort meant we were not crowded by others. The staff were very friendly and helpful, especially those who worked in the buffet restaurant where we ate most of our meals. We felt like we were part of their families. We had only lukewarm water for t [... read more]he first few days and the air conditioner was not in the best shape but we managed by opening the patio door for half an hour just before dark to allow for a flush of fresh cool air. We plan to return next year to the same resort. There is no higher recommendation than that!

In Need of Renovations!

This hotel is badly in need of renovations like new mattresses, Air Conditioning that works in all the rooms, increase in water pressure for all the rooms, hot water, and newer bathtub/shower stalls. On the positive side; the beach is amazing, the staff are friendly and the food is good!

Lovely resort but very outdated

Our recent vacation to this resort is with mixed feelings. The resort is in desperate need of being updated, it must have been amazing 15 years ago but time has really taken it's toll. The service and food are great and it is wonderful that it is small and very easy to get around. It has the most beautiful beach but unfortunately it has a huge problem with sand flees. Great for the price!

The beach is one the nicest I've seen, although because of the winds there was a huge amount of kelp swept in from the ocean. I had not seen this in previous years there. Our experience with the staff was totally positive. Our two complaints with the room were immediately corrected the next morning. The dining room staff were incredible. The mattresses were not the best but ok. The early evening entertainment was very good and they had an incredible guitarist, Daniel. Food was ok. There was lots [... read more]. The dishes did not vary very much from day to day. They had a lot of seafood. They warned us that there may be some biting insects that would be attracted to certain individuals and not others. The last 2 days of our stay I got several very itchy bites. I never saw what it was that was doing the biting. On the whole, we had a wonderful week.

In need of Renovation

The plumbing for this hotel should be completely replaced.Hot water is not always available in the afternoon. Renovation is needed and we have proof that things get broken,but don't get fixed.The transat representative suggested to all that you should put the toilet paper that you use to wipe yourself in the garbage can instead of the toilet as you might block the toiletThe A la carte restaurants are quite good. Nice quiet & cozy small resort

Very clean, Staff & food is amazing. Smaller resort that is not over crowded with lots of room to enjoy your stay & to relax, this was our fourth time here. Beach is always extra clean with low waters but no big waves, excellent for kids. Can fish off the pier on the spot.

Amazing resort !

We just came back a week ago.Vocation was wonderful ! MCG is really beautiful (a hope,that management will invest some money and will renovate hotel rooms)because it is very outdated .Service is great (we had problem with TV and it's been fixt with in cople of minutes)room was always clean .Food was good,a lot to try ,buffet was great. Great Resort, Amazing people!

This resort is the perfect size, everything is central and doesn't require a lot of walking. The beach is incredible and the different colours of the water are mesmerizing. What makes the resort is the people who run it, they are so friendly and personable and make every meal very enjoyable. Guillermo, Tony, and Edel are great servers in the buffet, make sure you get to know them! The only downfall is the little bugs, bring bug spray with lots of deet!

Home away from home

I have visited this resort 4 times in the past 2 years.. the resort it's self needs a little TLC here and there, but if you go in with an open mind.. realizing that it is Cuba and not a 5 star Mexican resort you will love it. I'm a picky eater and have no problems with the food. The Beach is beautiful, pool is also a great place to be.. but the lining in some spots is coming up and needs to be fixed. Not what I expected!

Beach and water good as well as the entertainment, however the resort is 2-3 stars the most. It is not my first time in Cuba such I know what to expect but this vacation was not really a vacation. One a la carte restaurant even they posted 3. The 'Italian'? Was in renovation and they were still booking even when painting and strong odour of paint. The Buffet was open but was not clean. A  [... read more]terrible skin rash with hives in the last 2-3 days destroyed even the last chance of vacation. Bring hydrocortisone cream with you, bug repelant. The skin problem last 2-3 weeks after returned from Cuba. Food was reused! I do not recommend it.

Another Great Week at MCG

You know we just spent another amazing week at the Melia Cayo Guillermo. Travelled with a group of 4 and had another amazing time. We have nothing to complain about. Staff are awesome and while some have moved on the new staff are equally amazing and go out of their way to make sure you have a great trip, you just have to let them.

Great week

Our week at melia cayo Guillermo was very good. The resort is a little tired and does need a lot of updating but the staff makes up for it. This resort is smaller and the staff gets to know you and takes care of all your needs.Most people we met there have been to this resort many times. That alone tells you everything. The beach is beautiful. We would not hesitate to go back again.

Awesome Beach and the Staff are #1

I spent a week here in late Sept and had a wonderful time. I brought two friends that had been to many other high end resorts in Mexico and the Dominican, and I wasn’t sure if they would like it, but they were very impressed also. The resort has a real ‘chilled’ intimate vibe to it, and the pier is amazing for fishing and snorkeling. The Staff are a major reason why I will be back. Pleasant good size resort on a beautiful beach

Cuba doesn’t have access to food like Mexico and they don't have those chefs with fancy recipes. But they do a pretty good job with what they have especially since I traveled in low season. Choice of food was a bit repetitive but good and we never starved. If you're going for gourmet dining, I suggest you go to Riviera Maya. But we already knew what to expect when in Cuba. The entire staff at the resort were very nice and accommodating. Special thanks to Yaninis, Misleidys and Alexeis at the lobby bar. They know what their client's want. Special thanks to Omar who works at the pool bar and buffet area; he went out of his way when my hubby wasn't feeling too well because of the extreme heat. The beach is easy to access from pretty much anywhere on the resort. Long stretch of beautiful white sand, warm turquoise water, and a very long deck on the ocean. I especially loved that deck for my early morning yoga practice at sun rise Such a view and peaceful moment to practice yoga. The beach is beautiful. NO ALGAE problem there! I urge you to keep it clean if you should go there. Bring a recyclable mug or bottle and use it each day. If everyone does his part, that beach will remain beautiful for long. Some tourists are a little sloppy, they figure that some Cuban will come around to pick up their garbage in the evening. Yes, they probably do, but if they miss some spots, that garbage ends up polluting the beautiful water for the fish to eat. Not pleasant to walk on old plastic cups and beer cans either. Keep in mind that you can visit the five other Melia hotels around there for 5 cuc/person using a shuttle. You can spent the day at another Melia to eat and use their facilities. Nice way to compare. We personally had a very nice and quiet room (1302). What impressed us was that you didn't hear the air conditioner; they use heat pumps to cool the rooms. So you get a quiet sleep. Buildings are all concrete so a lot more quiet in your room. Rooms were very clean and comfortable. Beds were very comfortable too. Melia Cayo Guillermo hotel does need to be refreshed but it is kept very clean. It could be a gem like another tourist said if they refreshed the hotel and upgraded the food more. Would be great if clients to have free wifi all over the resort too. Some improvements with Internet. You can now buy 1 hr internet access cards and connect via your various devices instead of using their computers. The cards cost 2 cuc for 1 hr. That's pretty much it. I probably would go back at some point if I want to rest and do my yoga on the water front. Perfect size hotel for that. Enjoy!

Fantastic Resort! Highly recommended!

This hotel was beautiful with a stunning view off the balcony! The staff were amazing and worked extremely hard. The pool bar had great piña colada's and beer. We went to two A La Carte Restaurants Cuban and Italian which were both fantastic! The Cuban restaurant was overlooking the ocean and the window we opened to allow a nice breeze inside. Nice one

We were in room 1311 and I loved it. Resort was small so everything was close by - the beach, dining area, pool, bar. This resort is close to Pilar beach and it is a must see. Everyone was friendly and place was clean. My favourite food was lamb, roasted pig, and beef goulash with rice. International drinks are included in the price so you don't have to drink local baverages. Fridge in the room always contained bottled water, pop, and beer.
