Stay away

Where to start... Hotel staff only provided one key for our 2 bedroom because it's "policy", not any policy I've seen before. They also tried to charge us again for breakfast we paid for in our package once we got to the hotel. There also is no gym as advertised, and pool is smaller than you'd think. Pool shower is not clean and has no water pressure. Their cleaning standards are VERY low! The floor in our (spoiler alert) first room were sandy, the room smelled sandy and wet as well. The glass i [... read more]n the shower was not clean, and all the bathroom hardware, including the toilet paper holder was riddled with limestone. More terrible water pressure with a rusted shower head. Some of the lights were busted and the TVs only had 2 channels. Very spotty wi-fi as well. Safes in the hotel are also all broken. Water in the toilet bowl was not clear, it was a light yellow still don't know what that's about. When we asked staff if all the rooms were like that, they said nothing was wrong with the rooms. They moved us a room over, and it was basically more of the same but at least all the lights worked. There was still hair in the shower from a previous use and the shower head was pointed towards the entrance of the shower so every time we used it, it made a mess. Since they also have no carpet, they just put towels on the floor. Hope you have slippers cause your feet will turn black walking around your own tiny room. The place is right off fifth ave, so it is very loud and there was also a horn going off like every hour, we never figured out what it was. Also the doors are not flush to the ground and we found salamanders in our rooms more than once. Would only recommend this place to people I hate. Best thing that happened was nobody stealing our stuff. Avoid at all costs!

Location great decent hotel

First day police took 100$ from my wallet after searching and finding nothing second night 2 local woman spiked our drinks and robbed us stole all our my credits cards and phones. Be careful but good location. Everyone is a scammer. Be careful.

A normal hotel for its price, but very noisy

Pluses: 1. The hotel is located close to the beach(walk for about 10 minutes) and fifth avenue 2. They cleaned the room almost every day Cons: 1. Very loud music plays until 2 am and on weekends until 4 am. In general, it is impossible to fall asleep because of it 2. The neighboring room was being renovated when I stayed there, so the renovation noise started at 8-9 in the morning and continued until the evening. But that's just my experience. A rather small pool, in which there was always cold water and it stank of chlorine

Provided the basics

Middle range hotel. Positives - quiet, felt safe, nobody hassled us in hotel, nice swimming pool, room cleaned daily, meal plan availabe in restuarant across the street including drinks. Negatives - room had an odor, fan was broken, ground floor balcony space was not private, one of the shower faucets did not work. 10 minute walk to beach. Playa del Carmen public beach was not very peaceful because of many vendors. Sargassum sea weed had to be cleaned up daily. Transfer back to airport (supposed [... read more] to have been provided by Air Canada vacations) was hard to arrange (no contact no provided, Spanish speakers at the contact number that we were given via hotel reception, hotel reception not very helpful with assisting) and did not in fact materialize, so we had to take a last minutes 70 USD cab ride to airport.

Maskless

its good because all the access is outdoors and this allows for less spread of illness such as covid. i had a great time with no mask the entire week. the locastion was good and food was great. i loved the staff so much,

Great Resort!

This hotel is perfect for anyone who is looking for a basic and clean hotel to stay at while in Playa del Carmen. It is centrally located and is within walking distance to the beach, 5th ave and all the surrounding shops and restaurants. The staff were very helpful and responsive. The only negative thing I can say is that sometimes in the morning the cleaning staff talk very loudly and it can be a bit disturbing.

Exactly what we expected

Our two weeks spent at El Tucan Hotel we’re just as expected. The location was perfect, the staff were amazing, and the breakfasts were yummy. We would go back again anytime. If you go there say hello to Ramon For us

Average Hotel on 5th

This is an older hotel in the middle of the busy 5th Avenue area. It is close to all of the tourist shopping and restaurants. We took the room with breakfast included and the breakfast was located across the road at their buffet facility. We did not have a fridge so I did miss that but the rooms were comfortable. Our housekeeper Amira was great...they should give her a raise. The pool is small with a few loungers around but you can see that in the pics online. The location is such that only tour vans can make it here. If you like to spend your vacation on the resort then I would upgrade to a nicer place but if you are out a lot doing things then this is ok. I requested extra pillows 3 times and got lucky on the 3rd try. The room A/C worked great and there was a safe in the room. Showers had hot water and we did have a small balcony.

Beautiful resort.

This resort is in the perfect location in Playa Del Carmen. It is on the main shopping street but is far back enough that no noise from people walking and shopping can be heard. Resort about a half block from Scotia Bank, fifteen minute walk to Walmart, about ten minute walk to Mega store and about ten to fifteen minute walk to ocean. Maids kept rooms very clean. Breakfast was absolutely perfect, coffee delicious. Staff in both hotel and restaurant were very friendly and courteous. There is also lots of restaurants off the main street that were both delicious and reasonable prices.

Amazing Hotel/Resort

Wow, Wow, Wow. This hotel was in the heart of it all right on 5th Ave. The photos of the grounds do not do it justice. From the time you enter from the street until your room is reached it feels like a jungle paradise and are well kept. Even sitting on the balcony of our two bedroom suite it was a tropical view. Their are tons of restaurants to choose from for meals within walking distance. We found the farther you were off 5th the cheaper meals were. Lots to choose from. We even found the cheapest place to buy cold beer from just two blocks from the hotel. Beach was very beautiful and depending on where you wanted to be was a 5 to 15 min walk. Pool was decent although a bit cool. There was what appeared to be a hot tub but it was not. Only disappointing thing. I would definitely stay here on a return visit to Playa del Carmen.

Second visit for us. Quite happy with resort location and helpful and courteous staff

I will be returning again in May. Despite poor reviews we have been very satisfied with our stays at the Tukan. Grounds are kept very clean. Public washrooms also very clean. Staff at reception and other staff we encountered were all pleasant. Room was great. Good size and comfortable. Plumbing and hot water worked well. A/C and TV were fine. Our ground floor room was steps away from lounge chairs and the pool. Music from a bar was somewhat loud but stopped at a reasonable hour. Great value a [... read more]nd location for the money. Really can't complain about anything.

This place is worse than a motel 8!!!

This place was disgusting. The rooms were old and the bathroom shower was filled with mildew. The towels were and so old and threadbare, they were grey instead of white. Also they only gave us one towel per person each day ( I need one for my hair and one for my body and my husband needs one). Didn't think it would be a big deal to ask and get some more, but when we did....they said no!!!! Bedding was also old and threadbare. Only two pillows in the room . Overall, very disappointing experience and would never recommend this place to anyone but 20 year old frat boys!!

Mixed feelings

The best thing about this hotel is its location; right on 5th Ave at the centre of the action. However, multiple things are problematic: 1) our room was located right by the cleaning crew's storage room which meant very loud and inconsiderate conversations at 6am and 11pm. 2) although our room was cleaned daily, we had to ask for basic things like hand towels and for the shower head to be fixed. The shower head was so bad that it was impossible to shower. Who would put guests in a room that  [... read more]has such amenities? 3) don't count on a good night's sleep... we could hear the shows/music from nearby venues as if they were playing right in our room.

Older Mexican style Hotel - certainly not a beach club

The picture of the hotel is a little deceiving. It actually is covered in plant life, which was okay but could see little from our room, which overlooked the pool. The building itself was old but clean, and was a walk-up, which I knew before I left so that was okay but for someone older they should be informed because it would be very difficult. We had a bit of trouble getting through the grounds to get to the front of the building because it was like a maze so we went out the side door to t [... read more]he alley, which was fine for us, no clock, no phone, no coffee pot which probably is the north american style. However, the front entrance and side entrance were right on or close to Fifth Avenue and we could walk everywhere and eat at the restaurants. The local food was really good and service great. On a scale of 1-10 I'd give it a six. I don't think we'd go back to the area though. We love Mexico and we'd move on.

Return Visit

Just returned from a weeks stay at El Tukan. This was my second visit to El Tukan and my wifes first.Check in was quick. Staff was helpful and friendly. No frills kind of place. Room was clean and an ample space for us. Small pool with loungers on grounds with loungers.Outdoor changeroom and restroom if you have to check out and wait around this is nice as you can still hang around the pool area.Free wifi worked in room as well. Tv had one english language channel available if that matters.Haird [... read more]ryer in room as well as a keyed safe. AC worked very well. El Tukan has a jungle feel that drowns out most of the hustle and bustle of Quinta Avenida which is where this is located. Right in the heart of Playa del Carmens 5th Avenue tourist strip.Maid service was great everyday. We look forward to our return primarily for its location and value pricing. We stayed with no meal or drink package included, however food and drink packages are available. We do not drink much and we used El Tukan as a hub.

Awesome Resort

This was excellent, the staff were very nice and helpful, the room was very comfortable, the hotel had so many beautiful trees it look liked a jungled, i loved it. It has a buffet restaurant, a la carte restaurant and 2 bars, and one bar at the beach. All of these had amazing food and excellent service. The hotel was in 5fth avenue, it was so centered everything was so close, even thou it was right by the beach it was a nice short walk and you still got to enjoy drinks at the beach at the Kool b [... read more]each bar. I would recommend it, we had an amazing stayed. I'd go back again, and off course the price was right. again great atmosphere, center, comfortable and excellent food and service.

Overall Good.

Hotel location was both great and not so great. Great because is located in the middle of the action. Not so great because the music coming from the bars is very loud and finishes off until the wee hours. We had to request a change of rooms twice. They obliged, it was OK at the end.

A basic hotel in the middle of everything

This is a great place for singles on a short stay. We didn't spent more time than necessary in the hotel and it served its purpose of bed and shower base. Air conditioning worked, and it was the only thing that matters for us. There are so many cool place to eat, drink, swim and dance in the area that hotel was just a place to store our stuff. This is not an all inclusive type hotel, so everything you need for life you should bring yourself (bottled water, hair dryer, hair conditioner, beach tow [... read more]els and a good sense of humour).

Hotel was good value with no problems.

Hotel was clean and staff helpful. Enjoyed the location including nearby ocean and entertainment. Nightlife and restaurants offered great choices in town. Ocean was great with several beaches to choose from.

Beautifully quaint resort

From the main street in Playa del Carmen you would never know that just behind the bar there is this hidden away, small tropical garden filled resort. There was a small pool and hot tub which was never crowded. We did not book all inclusive but there are so many restaurants everywhere that we had no trouble finding somewhere to eat. We did eat at the buffet restaurant affiliated with the resort and the food was great. The front desk staff were really nice. Especially Sandra!! She would take time [... read more] to answer any questions you had about where to go for dinner etc. Our maid Maria was also great. The room was cleaned well every day and she took time to do it right so that every day you would walk in and say "wow, it's so nice". The beach was a short walk away. And you could souvenir shop on the way there and back. There were no vendors on the beach, which was nice because while walking there you had no shortage of vendors. I don't mind them because they are just trying to make a living and when you said no thanks, they backed off.
