Cancun is a vacation hotspot with Sunwing and Air Transat providing charter flights all year. Other than these flights there are no direct or non-stop flights available. Charter Flights:
Sunwing and Air Transat offer a couple of weekly flights from Vancouver to Cancun from October to April. Between May and September they both provide one flight a week. The benefit of charter flights is discount airfare. Charter airfare is set months in advance, usually the spring for the following fall and winter.  This means that charter airfare usually does not change with demand.

Sunwing and Air Transat might offer cheap airfare before any seat sales or discounts.  Everyone can fly charter and take advantage of the discounted airfare. However, most people are booked on charter flights as part of a vacation package. Sunwing and Air Transat often reserve seats for people booking vacation packages or with all inclusive resorts.  This means you will want to book early as there are usually fewer seats available. Occasionally there may be a last minute seat sale, but not usually. This only happens when the seats held for vacation packages have not sold thirty days prior to departure.

Scheduled Flights:
If you are unable to take a charter flight from Vancouver you will need to fly out of Calgary, Toronto or Montreal. This involves connecting flights. You can arrange for your connecting flight to be a regularly scheduled or charter flight. Air Canada and West Jet offer daily scheduled flights from Toronto all year. Between October and May there are daily flights from Montreal and Calgary. Air Canada leaves daily from Montreal and West Jet leaves daily from Calgary.

Regularly scheduled airfares are very competitive and it is possible to find cheap flights.  Air Canada and West Jet now and then offer discount airfare or have last minute seat sales.  The best time to book your airline tickets is between one to four months before your trip or holiday. It is a good idea to book early and get any discounts before they sell out.

There is a myth that cheap airfare is always available at the last minute. It is true that there is a chance there might be seat sales within 30 days of departure.  But if you are waiting for seat sales you risk the flight selling out and missing the departure date you wanted. Also because flights to Cancun can sell out quickly you may find that ticket prices increase instead of decrease. Vacation Packages:
Vacation packages frequently include cheap flights because seats are pre-book with charter airlines. When planning a trip to Cancun it is a good idea to compare the whole trip, not just the airfare. Flying from border cities:
Occasionally cheap flights can be found at border cities. If it is more convenient or less expensive for you to fly out of the border cities you may wish to explore that option.  Just keep in mind any expenses or inconvenience involved with getting to a border city. Savings from cheap flights in border cities may not be real savings once the cost of getting to the different airports is compared.  Discount airfare and seat sales are only valuable if they actually save you money.
