There are usually several daily flights to Rome flying out of most of the major Canadian airports.  It is easy to access flights to Rome on tripcentral.ca’s flight reservations system to find the flights nearest you. Available flights to Rome increase in May and then decrease in December.

Depending on which airport you are flying from, there are even more flights available from mid June to mid September.  Air Canada and British Airways have daily scheduled flights to Rome from Calgary, Halifax, Ottawa, and Vancouver. Flights to Rome from Winnipeg are available with Air Canada. 

Toronto and Montreal have the most flights to Rome available. Air Canada, Alitalia and British Airways have consistent regular scheduled flights. Air Transat offers daily charter flights from Toronto and Montreal airports from May to December.  From mid June to mid September Sunwing has weekly charter flights from Toronto to Rome.

The best time to book your airline tickets is between one to four months before your desired departure date. Booking early lets you take advantage of any discount airfares before they sell out.  Always compare scheduled and charter airfares when looking for cheap flights from May to December. Not everyone is aware of the availability of charter flights to Rome from Toronto and Montreal and they miss out on discount airfare.  

Airlines have very competitive airfares and may offer discount airfare or have last minute seat sales. However, it is a myth that if you wait to book your seats until the last possible moment you will get discount airfare through a seat sale. There is no value in missing the flight you want for a hypothetical sale. Seat sales can give you very cheap flights but there is no guarantee there will be one. You risk missing your desired departure date or having the ticket price increase waiting for a possible seat sale.

When flying last minute to Rome it can be expensive so always take the time to look for but not wait for seat sales. Often cheap flights offered by Air Canada, Alitalia and British Airways will have sold out. If possible take advantage of charter airfares offered by Air Transat and Sunwing.  Charter flights are often cheap flights because charter airfares don’t change with demand.  Instead, charter airfares are set in the fall for the following summer season.

Before choosing a flight consider what is more important to you, discount airfare or non-stop flights?  Direct, non-stop and connecting flights all have advantages. Most scheduled flights to Rome are connecting flights, though some are direct or non-stop. Non-stop flights are non-stop – no stops en route.  Direct flights make a stop in another city to pick up or drop off passengers but a there is no change of planes. 

Connecting flights sometimes have a great advantage. You will need to leave one aircraft and board another aircraft during your trip. This makes it a convenient way to add a destination to your trip. You may wish to spend some time at the connection location. With connecting flights it is often possible to arrange flights that let you spend hours or even days there before continuing onto Rome. Additional costs or savings may be involved, depending on the airlines and the season.

Frequently savings from cheap flights in border cities are not real savings once the cost of getting to the different airports is compared. Seat sales are only valuable if they save you money.
