When Royal Caribbean launched their first Icon Class ship, we thought there was no way they could top it! And then they do it with each new Icon Class ship! Hero of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s fourth Icon Class vessel, arriving in Miami in August 2027, is no exception. With nine pools, 28 dining venues, a record-breaking waterpark, and a three-story family treehouse suite, Hero of the Seas isn’t just a ship; it's truly a destination at sea. Sailing the Caribbean, the maiden voyage departs August 11, 2027. Bookings are open now!
The Ship
Hero of the Seas is the largest cruise ship ever built, weighing in at around 248,000 gross tonnes and carrying over 5,600 guests. It homeports in Miami, sailing seven-night Caribbean itineraries from August 2027 onwards, with the maiden voyage departing August 11th.
What makes Icon Class special isn't just her size; it's what Royal Caribbean has done with it. All Icon Class ships are divided into eight distinct neighbourhoods, the family-focused Surfside, the lush Central Park, the adults-only Hideaway, the thrill-seeker's AquaDome, and more, each offering a unique atmosphere. Hero of the Seas takes each of those neighbourhoods to a new level, so you’ll never feel like you're just wandering an endless corridor.
What's New on Hero
Nine Pools — A Record
Hero claims the title of most pools at sea with nine distinct spots to swim, splash, and lounge. That includes the brand-new Coconut Cove, a laid-back tropical pool with in-water loungers and direct access to The Lime and Coconut bar, featuring views over Central Park's lush greenery. It's the kind of pool you sink into at noon and surface from at four, wondering where the afternoon went.
The adults-only Hideaway also gets a major upgrade with not just one pool, but two plus what Royal Caribbean is calling the largest swim-up bar at sea, complete with an in-water DJ booth. The Swim & Tonic adults-only pool is also 30% larger than it is on sister ships. For guests who want a more grown-up pool experience, this is where you’ll find it.
Category 6 Waterpark
Already the biggest waterpark at sea, Category 6 gets two brand-new family raft slides on Hero, including the first-ever funnel raft slide at sea. Splash up the curved walls of a giant funnel bowl before dropping through the centre. It's spectacularly fun! The mat-racing Storm Chasers duo also has new, faster and twistier lanes, for even more thrills!
The Ultimate Family Treehouse
This is the suite that has everyone talking, and rightfully so. The Ultimate Family Treehouse is a three-deck private suite sleeping up to twelve guests, something that simply does not exist anywhere else at sea. You get a rooftop terrace with a private whirlpool, a two-deck teen hangout space, and two main bedrooms each with their own bathroom and private balcony. Designed for multigenerational families who want to be together but also have their own spaces within the same accommodation, it's a genuine landmark in cruise ship design.
Dining
Twenty-eight venues cover everything from a quick poolside bite to a full theatrical evening out. The standout new addition is Orleans Parish Supper Club, a multi-course Cajun and Creole dining experience with live jazz, craft cocktails, and a setting inspired by the early 20th-century French Quarter. Every Icon Class ship has a signature supper club; Hero's New Orleans interpretation feels like the most inspired yet.
Royal Railway, a theatrical train-car dining experience that guests absolutely rave about, returns on Hero, only the second Icon Class ship to feature it. Board a vintage dining car for an immersive, multi-course meal with a full story arc. Part theatre, part restaurant, entirely memorable. We recommend booking early as bookings fill up quickly.
The Itineraries
Hero sails two 7-night itineraries from Miami, an Eastern route, and a Western route, both include a stop at Perfect Day at CocoCay, Royal Caribbean's private island in the Bahamas. That's not a minor detail: CocoCay is one of the best days on any Caribbean cruise, and the fact that it's guaranteed on every Hero sailing is a real selling point.
The Eastern route takes you from Miami to CocoCay, then on to St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands and St. Maarten, before heading back to Miami. It's our top recommendation for first-time cruisers or anyone who wants to tick off the classic Caribbean islands.
The western route goes from Miami to CocoCay, then onto Roatan in Honduras, and Cozumel in Mexico, before returning to Miami. Roatan sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest coral reef system in the world, and offers world-class diving and snorkeling. Cozumel offers brilliant cenotes and stunning beaches. We recommend this route for returning cruisers or anyone with a passion for the water.
You’ll enjoy a stop at CocoCay on either route. With the Thrill Waterpark, the largest freshwater pool in the Bahamas, miles of white sand beach, and the option to upgrade to Coco Beach Club for an adults-only infinity pool experience, Cococay offers one of the finest beach days in the entire Caribbean.
