The Algarve is Portugal’s beach coast: dramatic cliffs, walkable old towns, and long stretches of sand. It’s a great fit for independent travellers who want the value and convenience of a package, but plan to explore on their own. These packages include flights + hotel + transfers (and a checked bag).
Flights and trip lengths
Package flight options are typically built around direct service from Toronto and Montreal when available, while other Canadian gateways generally price as connecting flights. We offer the usual 7- and 14-night stays in peak season, plus winter long stays that can run 21–28 nights for travellers who want a slower pace and better value.
What the Algarve is like
Think “Atlantic coast,” not “Caribbean.” Summer days are hot, but the ocean stays cooler. If swimming in warmer water matters most, late July through September is typically the best window. In winter, the Algarve is popular for sunshine, golf, walking, and escaping Canadian cold (16C average high in January), but beach-water temperatures are too cold for swimming in winter and evenings can be cool (as low as 6C in January).
Where to stay in the Algarve
The Algarve has very different “zones.” The best choice depends on what you want your days to look like:
- Lagos: classic Algarve cliffs, beaches, and a lively old town (good mix of scenery and restaurants).
- Albufeira / Praia da Oura: busier resort vibe with lots of dining, nightlife, and easy beach access.
- Vilamoura / Marina areas: polished, marina-centric feel with golf nearby and a more “resort town” atmosphere.
Quieter stays: some resorts suit travellers who want relaxation and amenities on-site, with day trips by taxi, rideshare, or rental car.
Many travellers pair the Algarve with Lisbon (city + coast) or split their time across two bases to see more without rushing.
Need help picking the right base?
Algarve geography matters: two hotels can be “Algarve” but offer completely different experiences. If you’re torn between Lagos vs Albufeira, or want a long-stay winter resort that won’t feel isolated, talk to an agent who has been to Portugal and can help match the area to your travel style.
