Traveling to Turkey
Turkey is a vast and fascinating country straddling two continents, Europe and Asia, where civilizations have overlapped for thousands of years. From the Hittites and Greeks to the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans, each era has left an enduring imprint on the land. Modern Turkey, founded in 1923, is a secular republic with deep cultural roots, offering travelers an exceptional diversity of landscapes, traditions and historical sites.
Bordered by four seas and crossed by mountain ranges, Turkey feels like several countries in one. Bustling cities, ancient ruins, pristine beaches and remote highlands coexist, creating an endlessly varied travel experience that appeals to culture lovers, nature enthusiasts and food lovers alike.
ISTANBUL
Istanbul is Turkey’s cultural and historical heart, a city unlike any other. Divided by the Bosphorus Strait, it is the only metropolis in the world spread across two continents. Formerly known as Byzantium and later Constantinople, Istanbul was once the capital of both the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires.
Today, the city blends monumental heritage with vibrant modern life. Mosques, palaces and bazaars stand alongside cafés, galleries and ferry terminals. A walk through Istanbul reveals layers of history at every turn, from the domes of the Blue Mosque to the lively streets along the Bosphorus.
ANATOLIA AND ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS
Beyond Istanbul, Turkey’s interior reveals a land shaped by some of the world’s oldest civilizations. Ephesus, one of the best-preserved ancient cities of the Mediterranean, bears witness to the grandeur of Roman urban life. Troy, immortalized by legend, evokes the myths of antiquity, while Hattusa recalls the power of the Hittite Empire.
Central Anatolia is home to Cappadocia, a surreal landscape sculpted by erosion. Its rock formations, underground cities and cave churches reflect centuries of human adaptation to nature. Hot-air balloons drifting over the valleys at sunrise have become one of Turkey’s most iconic images.
NATURE AND LANDSCAPES
Turkey’s natural diversity is striking. In the east, Mount Ararat rises above the high plateaus, while Lake Van offers vast open landscapes near the Iranian border. The Black Sea region is lush and forested, contrasting sharply with the dry plains of central Anatolia.
Along the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, turquoise waters meet sandy beaches and hidden coves. Places like Ölüdeniz, Patara and the Datça Peninsula combine unspoiled nature with archaeological remains, while waterfalls, national parks and mountain ranges invite hiking, rafting and outdoor exploration.
DID YOU KNOW?
The word “turquoise” originates from Turkey, as the stone reached Europe through Anatolian trade routes. Turkey is home to tens of thousands of mosques, including some of the most architecturally impressive in the world. Istanbul alone spans two continents, and despite its long history, Turkey has one of the youngest populations in the region.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
The capital of Turkey is Ankara, while Istanbul remains the country’s largest city. The official language is Turkish, and the local currency is the Turkish lira. Electricity runs at 230 volts with European-style outlets. Turkey is seven hours ahead of Montréal. Bargaining is part of daily life in markets and bazaars and is generally expected.
CUISINE
Turkish cuisine is one of the richest in the Mediterranean world, shaped by centuries of Ottoman influence and regional traditions. It balances meats, vegetables, grains and spices with remarkable finesse. Street food plays an important role, from döner kebabs and grilled fish sandwiches to stuffed flatbreads and savory pastries.
Meals are often shared and accompanied by mezes, followed by sweet desserts such as baklava or künefe. Tea is a constant presence, while raki, an anise-flavored spirit, traditionally accompanies long evening meals.
CLIMATE AND BEST TIME TO VISIT
Turkey’s climate varies greatly by region. Coastal areas enjoy Mediterranean conditions with hot summers and mild winters, while inland regions experience colder winters and warmer summers. Spring and autumn are generally the best times to visit, offering pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds and ideal conditions for sightseeing, hiking and coastal travel.
CUSTOMS AND HOSPITALITY
Turkish hospitality is deeply rooted in tradition. Visitors are often greeted warmly and may be offered tea, food or assistance without hesitation. Respect for local customs is appreciated, especially when visiting mosques or rural areas. Modest dress, polite greetings and an openness to social interaction go a long way in creating meaningful encounters.
