Traveling to Croatia
Croatia is a Central and Southeastern European country bordered by the Adriatic Sea, where Mediterranean softness meets Central European heritage. Although independent only since 1991, Croatia draws on a millennia-old history shaped by Illyrians, Romans, Venetians, Austro-Hungarians and Slavic peoples. This blend of influences is visible in its architecture, gastronomy and way of life. With more than a thousand islands, a spectacular coastline and a preserved hinterland, Croatia offers a rare balance between culture, nature and seaside pleasures.
Stretching over nearly 1,800 kilometers of coastline, the country is dotted with historic coastal towns, crystal-clear coves and sunlit islands. Inland, forests, lakes and mountain ranges reveal a wilder face of Croatia, where national parks protect exceptional biodiversity. Whether visiting for the first time or returning after many years, travelers discover a country that feels both familiar and surprisingly authentic.
ZAGREB
Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is a lively yet human-sized city with a strong Austro-Hungarian character. Built between hills and plains, it is divided between the historic Upper Town and the elegant Lower Town. Cobblestone streets, churches, museums and cafés create a welcoming atmosphere where culture plays a central role.
Despite being the country’s political and cultural center, Zagreb remains easy to explore on foot. Its many museums, vibrant neighborhoods and green spaces make it an ideal introduction to Croatia, offering a refined urban experience without the crowds of the coast.
THE CROATIAN COAST AND DALMATIA
The Adriatic coast is the heart of Croatia’s international reputation. From Istria in the north to Dubrovnik in the south, seaside cities such as Pula, Rovinj, Zadar, Šibenik, Split and Trogir combine historical depth with relaxed Mediterranean living. Roman remains, Venetian palaces and medieval fortifications line the coast, all facing the deep blue of the Adriatic.
Dubrovnik, often called the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” stands out for its perfectly preserved city walls and monumental old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Split impresses with the remains of Diocletian’s Palace, seamlessly integrated into daily life, while Zadar surprises visitors with its blend of ancient ruins and modern installations like the Sea Organ.
THE ISLANDS
Croatia’s islands are an essential part of the travel experience. Each island has its own identity, from the lush landscapes of Mljet to the refined charm of KorÄula, the vibrant nightlife of Hvar and the preserved authenticity of BraÄ. Accessible by ferry or boat, the islands offer a slower rhythm, ideal for swimming, hiking and discovering local traditions.
The Kornati archipelago, a national park composed of dozens of uninhabited islands, reveals a striking mineral landscape surrounded by turquoise waters, making it a favorite for sailing and diving enthusiasts.
NATURE AND NATIONAL PARKS
Beyond its coastline, Croatia boasts remarkable natural heritage. Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the country’s greatest treasures. Its cascading lakes, waterfalls and wooden walkways create a spectacular and constantly evolving landscape.
Krka National Park, near Šibenik, combines waterfalls, river scenery and historical remains, while inland regions shelter forests inhabited by bears, wolves and rare bird species. Croatia’s commitment to preserving its environment allows travelers to experience nature in a raw yet accessible way.
DID YOU KNOW?
Croatia is the birthplace of the necktie, a fashion accessory adopted by European courts in the 17th century. Dubrovnik is home to one of the oldest pharmacies in Europe, still operating today. The Dalmatian dog originates from the coastal region of Dalmatia, and the white stone of BraÄ was used in iconic buildings abroad, including the White House in Washington.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
The official currency is the euro, and Croatia is part of the European Union. Croatian is the official language, but English is widely spoken, especially in tourist areas. The electrical current is 230 volts with standard European plugs. Croatia is six hours ahead of Montréal.
CUISINE
Croatian cuisine reflects regional diversity. Along the coast, menus focus on fresh fish, seafood, olive oil and grilled dishes, while inland regions favor richer recipes influenced by Central Europe. Local specialties include cured ham, sheep cheese, seafood risottos and slow-cooked dishes prepared under a traditional iron bell called peka. Wine production is deeply rooted in the country, with both continental and Mediterranean wine regions gaining increasing recognition.
CLIMATE AND BEST TIME TO VISIT
Croatia enjoys a continental climate inland, with cold winters and hot summers, while the coast benefits from a Mediterranean climate characterized by mild winters and dry, sunny summers. Spring and early autumn are considered the best periods to visit, offering pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds and more moderate prices. May, June and September are particularly ideal for combining sightseeing and seaside relaxation.
