TRAVELING IN NORWAY

Take a deep breath. In Norway, every breath feels like a bath of pure air. Traveling through this country means entering a world where water is everywhere, where solid ground sometimes becomes thin and fragile to give way to fjords, lakes, and waterfalls. Here, nature sets the rhythm—and the silence. A true, almost tangible silence.

Norway unfolds landscapes with evocative names—Geiranger, Sognefjord, Lofoten, Tromsø—and offers a succession of breathtaking coastal roads, lush mountains, deep forests, and colorful wooden villages. Stave churches, grass-roofed houses, and ever-changing reflections on the water can make travelers feel as though they have stepped into a Nordic fairytale. It is not uncommon to imagine, at the turn of a path, the shadow of a troll or the discreet trace of its passage.

The capital of Norway is Oslo. The country covers an area of 385,155 km², and its official language is Norwegian. The currency is the Norwegian krone. Norway is five hours ahead of Montreal. Electricity operates at 220 volts, and the international dialing code is 47.

DID YOU KNOW…

Norway has the longest coastline in Europe—excluding Russia—with more than 53,000 kilometers shaped by fjords. It is also home to the deepest lake on the continent, Hornindalsvatnet, and Europe’s highest waterfall, Vinnufossen. Norwegian engineering feats are equally impressive, including the Lærdal Tunnel, the longest road tunnel in the world, and the Eiksund Tunnel, the deepest subsea tunnel ever built. Norway also preserves nearly all of the remaining stave churches, unique medieval wooden structures found nowhere else in the world.

PREIKESTOLEN (PULPIT ROCK)

East of Stavanger, Preikestolen—also known as Pulpit Rock—rises 600 meters above the Lysefjord. This perfectly flat cliff appears suspended in midair and offers one of the most vertiginous viewpoints in Norway. The hike to reach it crosses streams, lakes, and raw, untamed landscapes, revealing the beauty of the region step by step. At the summit, the sensation is overwhelming: the world seems to stretch endlessly below. Caution is essential, as no guardrails interrupt this direct communion with the void.

TROLLTUNGA

Trolltunga, or the “Troll’s Tongue,” is one of Norway’s most iconic natural landmarks. This dramatic rock formation juts out over Lake Ringedalsvatnet nearly 700 meters above the water. The effort required to reach it is significant, but the reward is extraordinary: a spectacular setting of stone, turquoise water, and endless horizons. To fully experience the magic and isolation of the Nordic landscape, an early start is highly recommended.

GEIRANGERFJORD

Geirangerfjord embodies the very essence of Norway’s grandeur. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it unfolds like a natural theater where steep cliffs, deep waters, and legendary waterfalls converge. The Seven Sisters, the Bridal Veil, and many other cascades punctuate this dramatic scenery. Whether discovered from the road, hiking trails, a kayak, or a boat, each perspective offers a different yet equally breathtaking view.

THE LOFOTEN ISLANDS

Located north of the Arctic Circle, the Lofoten Islands are a true paradise for lovers of wild nature. Connected by bridges and tunnels, the archipelago reveals a striking succession of landscapes where jagged mountains, white-sand beaches, and fishing villages coexist in perfect harmony. The water is crystal clear, the light constantly shifting, and hikes lead to unforgettable panoramas. Staying in a rorbu—traditional fishermen’s cabins on stilts—allows travelers to fully immerse themselves in the soul of the islands.

OSLO

Oslo is a capital city that surprises with its perfect balance between urban life and omnipresent nature. Forests, fjords, and parks blend seamlessly into the cityscape. Oslo stands out for its cultural richness, with numerous museums, a striking modern opera house, and contemporary art galleries. A short ferry ride to the Bygdøy Peninsula reveals Norway’s maritime history, while the Oslofjord offers a sense of escape just minutes from the city center.

BERGEN

Often described as the gateway to the fjords, Bergen is nestled between sea and mountains. The city charms visitors with its warm atmosphere and its historic Bryggen district, whose colorful wooden façades are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fish market is a must-visit to discover local flavors, while Mount Fløyen provides exceptional views over the city and its surroundings.

URNES STAVE CHURCH

Urnes Stave Church is the oldest surviving stave church in Norway. Accessible by boat, it stands proudly on a hillside overlooking the fjord. Nearly 900 years old, it showcases remarkable craftsmanship, blending pagan and Christian symbols in finely carved wooden details.

THE TROLLS’ ROAD – TROLLSTIGEN

Trollstigen is one of the most spectacular roads in Europe. Clinging to the mountainside, it winds through sharp hairpin turns and dramatic landscapes dotted with waterfalls. An observation platform allows visitors to admire both this engineering masterpiece and the untamed nature that surrounds it.

TROMSØ

Located beyond the Arctic Circle, Tromsø is often called the Arctic capital of Norway. In winter, it is one of the best places in the world to witness the Northern Lights. In summer, the midnight sun bathes the landscapes in continuous daylight. Surrounded by fjords and mountains, Tromsø is also a lively city, rich in culture, museums, and outdoor activities.

FLÅM

The village of Flåm is world-famous for its panoramic railway, the Flåmsbana. This spectacular journey crosses mountains, valleys, and waterfalls, offering one of the most scenic train rides on Earth. The surrounding area is also ideal for hiking and exploring the nearby fjord.

SVALBARD

Svalbard is a land of extreme contrasts, dominated by glaciers and Arctic wilderness. Here, polar bears outnumber humans. Despite its apparent harshness, the archipelago fascinates with its exceptional wildlife and profound sense of absolute freedom. Every excursion feels like a journey beyond time.

CUISINE

Norwegian cuisine is deeply connected to the sea and the natural environment. Salmon, cod, king crab, and fermented fish play a central role, while game meats such as reindeer and moose complete a cuisine that is simple, hearty, and flavorful, often accompanied by rich, aromatic sauces.

SHOPPING AND SOUVENIRS IN NORWAY

Norway is renowned for its clean, functional design. Silver jewelry inspired by Viking motifs, wool products, decorative objects, and local food specialties make meaningful souvenirs. Fish markets and design boutiques offer opportunities to bring home an authentic piece of Norwegian culture.

SAFETY

Norway is one of the safest countries in the world. However, caution is essential when engaging in outdoor activities. Weather conditions can change rapidly, and some sites lack protective barriers. Hiking, mountain excursions, and glacier travel should be undertaken seriously and, when necessary, with experienced guides.

HEALTH ADVICE

Norway’s healthcare system is of excellent quality. Nevertheless, it is strongly recommended to purchase travel health insurance, particularly when visiting remote regions. A consultation at a travel health clinic before departure ensures adequate preparation.

CLIMATE

Norway’s climate varies greatly by region. Coastal areas benefit from relatively mild temperatures thanks to the Gulf Stream, while inland and northern regions experience harsher winters. Summer offers long, luminous days ideal for exploration, while winter captivates travelers with polar atmospheres and Northern Lights.

RELIGIONS AND BELIEFS

Although highly secular, Norwegian society maintains a cultural connection to the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Religion now plays a discreet role in daily life but remains present in certain traditions and national celebrations.

ETIQUETTE AND CUSTOMS

Norwegian society places great value on respect, equality, and civic responsibility. Punctuality, rule-following, and discretion are essential. It is customary to remove shoes when entering someone’s home and to bring a small gift when invited. The relationship with alcohol is distinctive, with consumption largely concentrated on weekends.
