Such a lively, friendly, and clean resort! Beds were comfortable, staff always friendly and willing to help with anything. Entertainment was constant of you wish to join in. Areas of peace and quiet if you didn't.

Nicole was fantastic to work with! She took the time to find several vacation options that fit our budget and helped us choose the perfect one for our family of five with three teenagers. We just got back from Riu Tequila in Mexico and had an amazing vacation! Nicole was friendly, responsive, and made the entire booking process easy from start to finish. We highly recommend her and will definitely use her again for our next trip.

Everything there was fabulous and I definitely would recommend the RIU Tequila to anyone. The staff, the lobby, the nightly entertainment, the restaurants, the beach. Definitely 5 star plus. Will definitely book with the RIU wherever I travel in the future!!!

Advise: Transportation from the airport to the resort may present a problem. Make sure you are on the shuttle list, otherwise, it will cost in excess of $400.00 for transport to and from the airport. There is shuttle service to and from the beach or if you chose to walk it will take approx. 15 minutes. I should state that the shuttle airport/resort thing maybe an isolated event. The travel agent is working to to resolve the matter.

Little rough checking in at 12.00 am only one person working at front desk finally got to the room unpacked got to bed at 130 am. we started our day at 700am and from there it was nice pleasant stay breakfast was good and lunch and dinner Staff was great pools were nice I thought it would be a problem to go to the beach but it was not the shuttle only took a couple of minutes or you could walk not far at all, beach was huge could use the pool and restaurant, bar at The Riu Yucatan, nice there too. Beach had seaweed but everyday they were cleaning it up you were still able to go into the ocean. When we went to Playa Del Carmen we noticed a mini market just down from the resort so we went there and they had some really nice shops. All in all we would definitely go to that resort again

We stayed at RIU Tequila in February 2026 and were very pleasantly surprised by the overall quality of the resort for the price. The grounds are beautiful, well-kept, and have a lively, fun atmosphere. Our room was modern and nicely updated in black, red, and white tones. Housekeeping was excellent—very thorough cleaning every day, and the towel figurines were a cute and thoughtful touch. Food was abundant and good quality. The selection was on the simpler side, but everything was fresh and tasty, and we never had trouble finding something we liked. The wine was surprisingly good, and the in-room alcohol dispensers and well-stocked minibar (beer and soft drinks) were convenient, even though we are not big drinkers. The hotel is not directly on the beach, but it’s just a short, pleasant walk through the grounds. There were plenty of beach chairs and towels available, and no need to wake up early to reserve spots. The beach restaurant was great, and the fresh fruit selection was a highlight for me. We had a small issue at check-in—the toilet wasn’t working properly—but we reported it to the front desk and it was fixed quickly and professionally, which really impressed us. The RIU Party was epic! We attended the White Party and it was one of the best resort parties we’ve experienced—fun, energetic, and comparable to a quality nightclub atmosphere. Overall, we were very impressed with the value, service, and quality of food and facilities. We would definitely return. Playacar itself is wonderful—safe, perfect for long walks, and very convenient with nearby markets, shops, pharmacies, and even a Starbucks.

We enjoyed everything about the Riu Tequila. The rooms are clean and comfy. The air conditioning works well. The quantity and quality of food and drinks were great. The entertainment is fun. The staff is very friendly. The beach is lovely. The ride to the beach club is quick and convenient. It is very nice to use the other 2 sister resorts for everything except their a la cartes. All 3 resorts have the same 4 a la cartes at each, so you're not missing out on anything. I like the fact that you don't have to reserve the a la cartes each morning. The money exchange is better at the resort than at the money exchanges in town. The proximity to Playa del Carmen is also convenient. You can either walk the 3 klms, or take a taxi for 150 pesos. The Playacar Plaza is just outside the resort and has many little stores and kiosks that offer all that you need for souvenirs and other needs. We plan to return again next year.

really enjoyed my stay hotel was very very clean staff were brilliant rooms very clean and the food was very good well worth the money a 5 min walk to the beach or you could get the mini bus but was better walking down a private entry shaded so it was cooler

We spent a wonderful time at Riu Tequila between February 24 and March 3rd . Flight with Sunwing from Toronto was ok. All was perfect : room is renovated and very nice, resort is big and well maintained, Mickael Jackson show was amazing too. Ocean water was not very shallow upon entry, and this is something that affected me since i cannot swim, but the beach is outstanding, with lots of palm trees for shade. Thank you What a

This resort to me is still truly awesome. Location is excellent, heavily secure gated community in the heart of Playacar. The facilities are showing a little of its experience. but all in all I believe it adds character and ambience of a well-established resort. STAFF is still biggest asset. They are so friendly, polite, helpful and aid in helping you feel comfortable, secure and happy. All areas are very clean and manicured to perfection Resort lobby and the room in which I stayed were spotless, just lovely. Food is terrific, expertly prepared and plenty of choices. Beach is a very short walk away or shuttle service is offered. 150 pesos gets you taxi service to the famous 5th avenue, Music and entertainment is still very colorful and energetic. Very very easy place to relax and unwind or to dance and party. I shall return!!!

We have stayed here 5 times and thoroughly enjoy all the trees and bushes and spaciousness of the grounds. I do think there is too much food waste though. For instance the steak house- the portion I got was enormous and I could only eat 1/3 as it was way too much meat. I would suggest to advertise 2 sizes- small and large.Also there is no. need to have the buns as an appetizer when we have another appetizer. Also place more signage reminding people to not waste and not to take more than they will eat- as it gets reflected in the hotel price. Also too many people stop to feed the animals roaming- better signage here also needed to not do so and enforce with staff discouraging it. We will stay again as absolutely it is the best hotel we have stayed anywhere thanks maureen.theresa

The best asset this resort has is the STAFF. No matter what area you are in, front desk, buffet, bar, room service, pool and beach areas and yes even ground keepers They all seem to really care, they help you in feeling comfortable, relaxed, secure and happy. The location is excellent, heavily secured gated community in the heart of Playacar. Easy access to gorgeous beach and 200 pesos taxi ride gets you to 5th Avenue. Actually you can walk to 5th Avenue if you desire. I have No complaints Food selections and varieties are plentiful. No watered down drinks, you can have them made as strong as you like. Music and entertainment very colorful and energetic. Super great place to unwind, relax or to dance and party. Simply put I love it and shall return !!!

The Riu parties are fun, the performances were as expected, nothing special. The entertainment always got pushed later sometimes almost 11pm so there were times when we just ended up going to bed after a few minutes of the show. There were quite a few things to do throughout the day. I tried three times at three different bars to get a decent margarita, no such luck, they were all rimmed with table salt and had no flavour. The food at the buffets are good, service is decent but I didn't find much of the staff overly friendly. It's nice that you can get food and drinks 24 hours a day. The beach is okay, albeit crowded with little shade. The walk does not take too long and is shaded and there is a shuttle, but make sure to check the times posted as there are times during the day it doesn't run. The rooms are comfortable and the mini bar is stocked every other day, although you can request more if needed. There is serve your own alcohol (bottom shelf at best) in the room. Pool areas are clean, I stayed away from the party pool as not many people leave that pool during the day even while drinking and it can be very loud. I heard the disco can be busy but watch your drink!…I know of two people being slipped something in their drinks! It takes over an hour to get to the hotel from the airport. I would return here if I got a good deal.

The Hotel is great! We went as a family with kids, they are activities at night, beach was beautiful and foods are tasty! Lots of choices! The buffet is always fresh with updates! Workers are friendly! We will be back for sure!

All-in-all an okay resort, good food, service was always good, if not a bit flat. I didn't find any of the staff to be overly friendly, and were very curt, other than Rafael that lead the Spanish lessons, he was great. The white party was a lot of fun. I honestly wouldn't return because of the many negatives I experienced. I may have enjoyed the resort more if I had gotten a full night's sleep and not been mortified by a thoughtless act.The worst thing for me was the disco where I was slipped something in my drink. When I told someone at the front desk, they radioed over to the club and the whole thing was broadcast throughout the lobby area, I was mortified and felt afraid for retaliation for telling staff, I felt like I was being shamed. If you do go to the disco, watch your drink like-a- hawk. Further, we had a room on a second floor of a bungalow and all I would hear all night would be doors slamming and people yelling. It echoed so badly that I was woken up many times throughout the night, and then the furniture moving and balcony doors slamming would begin first thing in the am. We finally had to put white noise on my phone so we could sleep through the night. Worth a note: We couldn't get a third device to work on the wifi even though it says you get up to 4 devices per code and we only had two, even after speaking with IT. There were more things I liked but the negative far outweighed the positive IMHO.

The Tequila is a beautiful resort, with excellent staff always willing to serve you with a smile. The a la carte restaurants offers delicious food between the Steak house and Italian. Don't be shy to request anything you want and they will try thier best to accommodate you. Great resort.

This resort is full of activity. Visiters to the Palace resort could be found at the Tequila Sports Bar enjoying sports not readily available at their resort. No need to pay more when Riu Tequila has it all. We spent time at the Yucatan resort enjoying the ocean and pool. Our stay included the Yucatan and the Playacar (a nice walk on the beach to stop for a refreshment.) Great food, atmosphere, shows and entertainment staff.

This was our first trip to Mexico in 30 years.We didn’t know what to expect especially after COVID.The resort is well maintained ,extremely clean and well layed out.The fact it’s located in a secure gated community was an extra measure of comfort and it’s a 20 minute walk to main Shopping Area(5thAve). There are 3 restaurants with no reservations required as well as a buffet and all in all the food was good especially breakfast. Lunch was also available near the pool area serviced by a barbecue which was beyond fantastic.Best burgers around and the variety of barbecued meats,steak, chicken and pork was great.We pretty much ate there every day. Our favourite part was the 24 hour sports bar that had food available and we were able to watch most of our football,hockey and soccer games. My only criticism is the fact there was only 1 swim up bar.Being a popular location it became very crowded as the day went on . The beach which is located across the street was beautiful and well maintained as well.There is a shuttle every 10 minutes and also a lunch buffet/ bar available there too so you can easily spend the whole day down there.

The grounds at this property are beautiful, and the staff that look after it do an amazing job. This is probably the cleanest resort I have ever been to. The public areas and washrooms are always clean and the cleaning staff do an amazing job. There were 4 ala carte restaurants and 1 buffet restaurant. The restaurants do not take reservations so some can get quite busy at the beginning of dinner time. The buffet restaurant was fantastic and offers a wide variety of different types of foods. I ate at 3 of the ala carte restaurants and they were all good. We had a regular room in 3rd block which was conveniently located close to the main lobby as well as one of the pools. The room was quite spacious and very nice. Most nights the entertainment was pretty good. The entertainment team was fantastic and always friendly and happy to answer anything you had questions about. One day they had a foam party in the activity pool and it was quite fun. Everyone seemed to enjoy it. The beach was across the road and about a 5-7 minute walk through a pathway. The beach was quite large with lots of chairs to use, however not much shade only palm trees to keep the sun out. Even though I was aware of the seaweed problem in the Playa del Carmen area, I was disappointed to see that there was still quite a bit of seaweed there everyday that you had to wade through to get out into the water. The hotel did there best to keep it under control by cleaning it up everyday but it just kept coming back. All in all this was a fantastic resort for all age groups and I would definitely return and recommend it to anyone looking for an all round great time.

Clean hotel and public restrooms, really good food, comfortable beds and pillows and nicely decorated rooms, friendly staff, good drinks, beautiful sandy beach and turquoise water. Wouldn’t even know it was a pandemic at the resort, which was slightly uncomfortable. Meaning the Friday night Riu party - super crowded & guests arriving by the bus load to the resort, the foam party at the pool - super crowded and foam being shared by everyone in the pool, the buffet was mostly self serve and some guests were not very sanitary in the food area.

The Riu Tequila was a great experience. The food was excellent - buffet was great and had a vast variety of foods, and the a la carte restaurants were good and convenient (not having to reserve was really appreciated). Room was nice (especially the bathroom) and well-appointed. Grounds were meticulously maintained. Entertainment was okay, but the Neon Party must be experienced! The service was tremendous - drinks were generous and the servers were eager to serve. Wait times were non-existent. There was a pool for everyone (kids, quiet folk, and a more 'energetic' crowd!). A bit of a walk to the beautiful beach (missed seeing the beach all the time), but the overall experience made up for it. Well-done Riu!

We needed a stress reliever after 2 years of no vacations, this resort was clean, well spread out so social distancing was not a problem, the food and staff were amazing. I highly reccomend this resort for rest and relaxation with a hint of excitement. Sincerely, Deanna & Aaron

Hotel was refreshed recently. New beds and furniture including washroom and shower. It was very nice. Even tho beach was a short walk it was well worth it, I would stay at it again. Food and bars were amazing as so was the service. Only thing that grossed me out was the swim up bar at the pool as it had a different tint to it as I suspect most guests would not use the washroom.

First of all, with all Covid concerns, they did an excellent job. Masks worn, temperature taken, continuously mopping and wiping things down. The resort is beautiful, almost like beings in a forest. The food was pretty good. Lots of vegetables and fruits. If you had dietary restrictions, I think you could find a good variety of food here. The pools were nice. Entertainment was pretty good, REALLY LOUD. My only complaint would be. The ocean is far away. One shuttle that seats 7. Can't understand why you don't have at least two shuttles taking you to the beach. Also why not offer a shuttle to take people from their unit to dinner. I have knee issues so found the walking painful many nights. I would not recommend this resort to someone with mobility issues, it is big and an effort if you like a beach, plus quite a step down when you go into the water. Tons of chairs and shade at the beach once you get there. Overall our vacation was relaxing and enjoyable despite the amount of rain. My Trip Central consultant was amazing.

Riu Tequila is a wonderful resort. It appeared to me early that this resort had a great management team with strong leadership skills. No matter which area or corner of the resort you were in the staff and workers were extremely positive, polite, friendly and eager to please. Such pleasure to see and feel. The food was terrific, great varieties and excellently prepared. Rooms are newly renovated, modern and refreshing. The pool's and pool area's are spacious with lots of chairs and palaps. Evening shows and nightly entertainment are very musical and colorful, with lots of dancing and singing, especially the White Party (60's 70's 80's tunes). A definite must see. The spa treatments are fantastic. Initially you think "WOW" this is a little pricey, however after you indulge in a massage, you gravitate to a different zone and a special level of appreciation. Well worth the price. Entrance to the beach is a short walk and even shorter ride. It is somewhat majestic, a long corridor with white pillar architecture, beautiful vegetation and greenery, also the occasional small monkey. It opens to a gorgeous sandy beach. A massive area decorated with palm trees and beach chairs. Very, very comfortable and relaxing setting. This is a truly awesome resort that caters to your comfort. I shall return!!

Everything was great. Rooms were spacious and very clean. Lots of food options, very tasty. Really liked the restaurants. Lots of fun activities for the entire family. Beach was beautiful and well maintained.

Our hotel room was clean. The food was great. Our 2 and 4 year old kids did not get sick from the food. The staff was very helpful and hospitable. I would book here again. Staff was very accommodating.

This was the first time in Mexico and it was awesome! Love the Riu chains as been to the DR and Jamaica. Lots to do and great restaurants and buffet. Food was great everywhere, even at the beach in the yukatan hotel area where pools are. Only a 5/7 min walk to beach from Riu tequila. And you can shop nearby too. We had 6 days of sunshine then rained once. Hotel staff were great all around. The white party was nothing I have ever seen so much fun. I will definitely come back one day.

Very clean and well kept hotel. Very good food. Have Celiac and they were very good to help me with the buffet items. They prepared gf pizza and pasta when requested. Also did my omelettes in a clean frying pan. Italian restaurant was very good. Rafael the head waiter spoke very good English and was well versed about gluten free items. Beach was beautiful. Not beachfront but knew that beforehand. Close to Playa de Carmen for shopping. One hour bus ride from airport.

This was our second time staying at this resort (pre and post renovations) and it definitely lives up to its 5 star rating (and I have stayed at more than 8 Mexican 5 star resorts.) The grounds are spotless, the food is unbelievably incredible (the best I have ever had) and the beach is breathtaking (the short 5-7 minute walk is relaxing and beautiful, or you can catch a shuttle that takes 1 minute). The rooms are nice, modern, clean and cold. The fridge always stocked daily. the only concern with the room was that there were many mosquitoes inside the room everyday/night (my room and my families room). I think they were entering through the vents. It was definitely an issue, however we did not contact management and had we done so they probably would have moved us to a new location. We stayed at the very end building in the 2600. Other than that, everything was perfect. The night life entertainment was great! Staff was very kind and accommodating. The dining dress code is a little strict. I highly recommend this resort and we will definitely be back for a third time!

Everything was exceptional: food, service, excursions, comfortable and spatious room. Every day I woke up early to experience as much of the area and sunshine as possible. A short break from the cold back home was rejuvinating.

A truly top notch hotel. From the minute we arrived, the check in process was smooth. We were offered a fruit drink on arrival and then our luggage carried to our room right away. The rooms are spacious and very clean. I loved the Mexican feel to them. They did an excellent job of cleaning the rooms daily and always included a little surprise to brighten up our day......flowers, towel figurines. The pool was also very clean, lots of loungers and clean towels available all the time. The pool bar was excellent and their drinks were definitely not watered down. The beach is across the street. There is a lovely treed walkway or you can take a shuttle. We loved to walk it though especially after having a large breakfast. Lots of loungers at the beach so never had to worry about not getting one. While at the beach you can have lunch at the restaurant that is located at that resort and also use their pool and pool bar. We ate lunch there a couple of time but found it very busy so we preferred to head back to the Riu Tequila where things were not as crowded and in my opion food was much better with more selection . All the restaurants at the Tequila were excellent , the food was exceptional. We enjoyed every meal we had. The restaurant are also very clean. The staff is always making sure that food is fresh and serving utensils at the buffet are replaced frequently. I have actually never been to any other resort where they do such an impeccable job. The evening entertainment is like nothing I have seen before. The team is extremely talented. It was like watching a Vegas show every night. You can tell that all the staff take pride in what they do. They are friendly , courteous and go out of there way to make sure you are enjoying yourself. It feels like they are all one big happy family. I was extremely impressed at how well things are maintained and the fact that they pay attention to small details. I would have rated it a 10 star if there was such a thing. They are doing renovations in the spring so I really hope they don’t change the feel of the hotel too much by modernizing it. It is perfect just the way it is. We are already looking at booking our next visit there. Thank you again to all the staff for making our vacation so memorable!

Great beach area with a few snorkeling spots 20 minutes beach walk. Great food but small pool, rooms clean and spacious. Resort is located very close to 5th avenue shopping area in Playa del Carmen. There is a shopping mall right beside the resort, please do not go there. Is the biggest scam I ever seen, they literally charge you 30 to 50 times the value of the goods. Instead go visit Centro Maya in Playa del Carmen. I need to go there to buy basic stuff as Sunwing Airline mishandle one of my suitcase, which came after three days at the resort. Do not even consider Sunwing Airlines, they provide horrible service.

Overall the rooms were clean and the grounds were well kept. The food was very good. Only bad thing we weren't close to the beach. 5-7 minute walk. Over all it was a good place for a vacation. Staff was very kind and nice! Heard they're renovating and would love to see it when it's finished in 6 months.

Where should this review start? This trip was myself and my elderly mother (her first time to Mexico, my third time, but never at Tequila). Two people and we only got one room key. We had the "garden view" room, the view was of a manhole and the street. The knob of the dresser fell off as soon as we got there. The blankets smelled mouldy. The alcohol in the room was watered down, one alcohol dispenser was broken. The buffet food was lacking, salad bowls had water at the bottom. When eating it, it tasted as if there was chlorine in it. Last but not least, ROACHES! I wondered why the hotel staff kept cleaning all the time; well that's why...little critters crawling around the hotel lobby! Oh wait! There was cat in the lobby who kept vomiting! This trip was a total disappointment and waste of money.

This hotel is great! The resort is very clean. It has nice rooms that are cleaned everyday and towels,sheets and drinks replenished everyday. It has yummy food to cather to all. The beach and grounds are beautiful. The service staff is always working hard to make your visit memorable.

The grounds were beautiful! Service was great all around from house keeping, to waiters, reception...! And the food was amazing not a day we were there were we disappointed!! Hope to be back there again sooner than later :) Thank you To Riu Tequila for an amazing vacation away! Miss it already!!

All staff and entertainment was just amazing. Hotel holds it old world charm of Mexico. Would've been nice if it was on the ocean as well, but it was just a short walk away. Hats off to the Entertainment staff from the early morning, well into the evenings who were always out to make sure everyone was enjoying themselves.

This is our second visit to riu tequila. Typically, we stay at a chain we know, but like to try different locations. What we loved about this one is that it's got everything going for it. Food, clean, great staff, playacar location, best beach, memories, awesome show and all activities are around a central area making it easy to be at the hotel. Love it there

Loved the resort, the beach, the pools and the atmosphere. The staff was welcoming and helpful. It was nice to be able to walk to the town from the resort and feel safe to do some shopping. The food selection was wonderful and everything was very tasty - really good food.

I cannot say anything negative about this hotel. The food was very good. We only tried the steak house for a la cartes. We preferred to just go to the buffet. All of the staff were very friendly. Our favourite bartender was Ray at the bar outside of the sports bar. The entertainment staff worked so hard to get to know everyone. Special thanks to Victor, Anderson, Ricky, and Edy for making our week so memorable. The entertainment staff will take you to playa del carmen to a club at night. It sounds very sketchy but is not at all. They take very good care of you and make sure you are safe at all times. The rooms are nice and clean. The beach is phenomenal. The pool is nice but very quiet with a few activities throughout the day. All in all it was the best resort I have ever visited. Would love to go back!!

We loved the Mexican hacienda ambiance of this resort and found it to be kept very clean and well organized. The staff was very friendly and helpful. There was a great variety of food, very tasty and we didn't have any trace of illness, which we were wary of from previous bad experience in Mexico. If you want a Mayan moment, make memories here!

Hotel rooms does't have much view and little old.The room was clean. Food was good but the buffet in total was better than three existing restaurants. Beach is ten minutes walk but we could use pools,bars and the lunch buffet of RIU Yucatan which it was good and full of activities. we stayed 14 days and enjoyed every moment.

I was really impressed by the quality of this resort. Proximity to beach, downtown, stores and various attractions is perfect. Food was amazing at all restaurants. Grounds were beautiful and well maintained. Room was spacious, nice and well stocked. Matresses not the most comfortable though. Housekeeping was great and all staff were friendly, accommodating and professional. Evening entertainment between supper and club opening was a bit boring for us twenty-somethings. Should offer a selection of movies to order in room.

Had a great time. The staff were all wonderful and efficient. My room seemed to be recently redone with nice furniture and a comfortable bed. I was close to the main building but it was quiet. The beach was awesome. White, powdery sand. Lots of palm trees for shade. The food was excellent in all the restaurants. Not much to complain about here.

Second time in three months. Fantastic. Staff, entertainment, rooms, friendly, amazing food. Being an all inclusive 24hr bar should include pool free as I didn't want to carry cash. Entertainment was great but saw the same shows.

We had an amazing time. Spent 15 days in Riu Tequilla! Rooms are great, staff friendly, shuttle to the beach always working (does not run between 13:00-15:00), takes 5 min on foot to the beach from the lobby, beach is amazing! All in all, we are coming back!

This resort was wonderful , we loved the décor, the dinning rooms , the steak house was awesome, I would have liked a seafood house instead of steak but they did have a skewer of shrimp and snapper which was delightful. Staff was wonderful .Buffet was excellent, our hotel room was at the very back but that was good because after drinking and eating it was a nice walk back to room. The only thing I didn't like was all the coati animals , for this reason we would not go back, they are an issue they actually almost cornered us trying to get the food we had in containers...they are not afraid of humans, and the other stupid tourists that have feed them in years past has caused this problem. We were originally going to the Bahamas to snorkel ,but because of hurricane Matthew we had to pick another destination , so this was not our first choice, but everyone there just wants to make money of you, going Akumal , going to the ferry Cozumel ......etc. Excursions way to much money and they are in US dollars but the hotel doesn't even accept US currency...The beach shuttle works fine just be prepared that there are 1000's of people on the beach very nice sand and you can walk for miles only 2 days were Yellow flagged the rest Red Flagged......We will not be back , but we did enjoy are stay of 7 days of rain and monsoons. and raccoons everywhere..............

The hotel is really beautiful, strongly recommend to keep the colonial flavour in case of refurbishment. The other RIU resorts located on the beach have a modern glass/chrome flavour that I hate. If I need that I can go to a hotel downtown Toronto. Staff is great from top to bottom. Had the feeling that I'm part of a big family. Food was great, good variety. Had lamb, turkey, steak, roast, tuna, salmon, salads, variety of cheese, natural juice. Of course hamburger, hot dog and pizza for the morons who prefer fast food instead real food. Croissants were not the real ones that I like and the desserts were a step back compared with what I had at other resorts in Mexico but this is just a drop in the ocean and by no means a deal breaker. Usually the family strategy is to have a different experience with each trip. If this will change we would be more than happy to return to RIU Tequila.

Riu Tequila is a slightly older resort and it's age really presents in the accommodations. Not that the rooms were unbearable, because who's actually spending that much time in them anyways?, however the beds were very uncomfortable an made for long nights and early mornings. The location of this resort was great. It's tucked away in a gated community that really makes you feel safe. The beach can only be accessed through the sister hotel Riu Yucatan. The walk to the beach isn't too long (maybe 10 mins) and is completely shaded. Worth noting that the gates to the walkway lock at 11:00 pm, so a night beach visit always required some quick runs back. The best part of Riu Tequila is the food. There are not many restaurants to choose from but what is available is always delicious, including the buffet. Staff are very friendly and willing to help in anyways possible. The resort grounds are nice. It has more of a forest type feel rather than a beach resort. There are many animals on the premise including cats and cootes!! The pool is very small and the pool bar was always crowded. However there is bar in the lunch area that is only a few steps away. The nightly entertainment was disappointing. Often it was shows filled with amateur dancers an very revealing outfits. The Yucatan seemed to have better entertainment. Daytime entertainment wasn't anything special either. Most people were at the beach during the day so there was not many groups of activities taking place. Although there always seemed to be a game of bingo going on. Overall the resort was satisfying and provided a relaxing vacation, although If you are beach people then I suggest staying at the Yucatan and saving yourself long walks after tired days.

This resort was one of the better Riu resorts that I have been to. My main complaint with most resorts is the food but I have no complaints just praises for the Tequila. I am a very fussy eater with a sensitive tummy but I had no trouble finding foods that I not only liked but enjoyed. We did go to the beach everyday because the pool water was like a warm bath & not refreshing at all. The beach was beautiful & the walk or short ride was not a problem. We did encounter a problem with the line up for the beach shuttle as their is no control over the clueing process so many rude people just rushed up & got on before those of us waiting in line. This needs to be addressed as it can be very annoying & that is not what vacations are all about. The rooms were dated & a bit musty smelling. There rooms & resort in general were well attended too & clean. Bed & pillows were comfortable. All in all a perfect spot.

The resort was very charming beautiful not too big not too small beautiful settings very nice resort The food was excellent and the service was nice the resort itself was very Mexican architecture which made the resort looks very nice compared to some of the resorts that we were visiting nearby they were newer but didn't have the Mexican so my reckoning mandation would be would go back excellent resort

Everything was exceptional to the highest extent. The rooms are huge, clean, and close to pools, bars and entertainment. The beach was beautiful and the best part is being able to use two other resorts while in the same vicinity. The staff are very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation.

The Riu Tequila is a great resort that is designed in the old school hacienda style, which I really enjoyed. The grounds are kept in a clean and immaculate state by a really dedicated staff. The resort does show it's age in some areas but I prefer that to a brand new resort that has no flaws but is styled like a downtown condo. The best part about the resort has to be the staff, they are so welcoming and professional. Additionally, the food and drinks are also top notch. The buffet offers so many choices and has a different theme each night. Our family travelled with a teething toddler so we chose not to try the a la cartes as we wanted to be able to eat as soon as we sat down. Our room was clean and stocked with lots of water, pop and beer every other day. The resort has two storey haciendas and is flat, so great for people with mobility issues. The clientele was a mix of Europeans and Canadians for the most part and everybody was friendly.

Spent a week at Riu Tequila, our second time in Playacar Gated community. Its walking distance the downtown Playa del Carmen, we did the jaunt to 5th ave twice this week. Overall impression of the Riu Tequila was very good. Ill touch on a few key points; The food was amazing- there was something for everyone- there was only one day throughout the trip where is was less than par- everything overcooked; but overall no complaints about food. The drinks were fabulous! Premium spirits and they were not shy with them- they learned quickly what you liked and how you liked it and never let you go without a drink in your hand. The staff was SUPERB! By far the best customer service we have received yet in Mexico - even the staff that did not have great English communicated themselves in other ways very well and understood what you asked- though could not always give a great verbal response. The staff definitely made up for any downfalls. The entertainment was slightly disappointing at times, but we did see 3 spectacular night shows- Moulin Rouge, Michael Jackson and Mammia Mia were great make sure you see them- props and costumes were spectacular I thought. The rest of the shows- and the day entertainment- not overly great- we enjoyed it more down by the beach pool at the Riu Yucatan. The Tequila is a walk from the beach but a manageable one- there is also a shuttle that runs every 10 min- they stop for lunch between 1-3. The beach itself if beautiful- and even though you share it with all the other Riu's and the Wyndam is tucked in there too there were lots of loungers. Once you are down there there are 2 "snack bars" at which you can eat, one at Riu Yucatan and one at Riu Palaycar. This was not a downfall for us but would be for many- the resort feels more in the "jungle" your surrounded by lush greenery so If your looking for a great "beach vacation" I would encourage the Riu Yucatan or Riu Playacar. The rooms were very clean and well kept, the grounds were meticulously maintained- its not a new resort but definitely does not feel old. All in all- good resort:)

Even if its an older hotel, it was in excellent shape, very clean, spacious room with a well stock bar. Buffet restaurant was amazing so we did not bother to wait in line to get in at one of the 3 restaurants. Small walk to the beach and if you don't or cant the have a shuttle. once there plenty of chairs, bar. superb pool and restaurant at our disposal. Best feature for us, you can walk 2km either by the beach or street to playa del Carmen.

We really couldn't find much to complain about with this resort except that the tea could have been hotter and the oatmeal should have been served unsweetened. (Better to allow people to sweeten their own oatmeal.) The resort is beautiful, the grounds clean and nicely landscaped, and we loved the Spanish style of architecture. (We hope the resort doesn't undergo a renovation to a modern hotel look with chrome, shiny white marble floors and pink decor similar to that of a resort across the street). Our vacation at the resort was all-inclusive. We did not feel nickel and dimed or unpleasantly surprised by hidden charges. We didn't have to pay for drinks at the bar or for the safe in the room. The food was great - plenty of choices and variety. We had breakfasts and suppers in the gorgeous dining hall. (One evening, we were musically entertained by the Romantic Trio, adding to our dining enjoyment.) For lunch and afternoon snack, we liked going to the outdoor restaurant. For a nice change some evenings, we took advantage of dining by reservation . The staff were friendly and helpful and always greeted us with "Ola" whenever they saw us. We were never asked or harassed for tips. The staff really made our stay enjoyable!! Our room was clean and comfortable and kept well stocked with water, towels, etc. We liked how the bed consisted of 2 double beds pushed together. Taxis and excursion vehicles were clean and new. Taxi fares were consistent. The drivers were neatly dressed and polite. The beach was clean, not crowded, and was well stocked with lounge chairs. There were more than enough lounge chairs for everyone and, therefore, no problem with folks claiming chairs for the day while others had to do without (as we had previously experienced on resorts in other countries and on cruises). The resort is across the street and a nice 5 minute walk away from the beach. We liked that there was often a driven motorized cart to take us to and from the beach if we didn't feel like walking. We were also permitted to use another Riu beach club for lunches - very convenient on days when we would spend time on the beach. We didn't use the pools on our resort, as we preferred the beach. Excursions were well-organized and went above and beyond our expectations. The tour guides were very friendly, knowledgeable, approachable, spoke English well. I would have liked to have had more spa services (like facials, makeup application, hair cutting/styling, as well as products to purchase), at our resort. These services were available at another resort but not convenient to access. On our last day and after checking out, we were able to go for a swim and then we were allowed to use the resort's showers, which were stocked with clean towels and hair dryer. We were so pleased with this. This had been a problem for us on a previous vacation in another country. Overall, we had a wonderful vacation at this resort!

The hotel was very clean. Food was great. Service great atmosphere was great plan on going back. Great location great beach just a short walk away Lots to do in playa Del Carmen if you get a chance do some of the excursions

We stayed at the Riu Tequila January 11-18, 2016. Of all of the resorts that we have stayed at, 5+ and 3, this one has the best of all the properties that we look for in a vacation. First off I will say that if you go looking for problems, you will find them. Some reviewers complain about age and wear and distance of beach. The positives outweigh these very very insignificant and minor aesthetics. The staff is friendly, helpful and exceptionally interested in comfort. We were a party of 11, so social convenience was an asset. The entrance/foyer/ check in was a dream. The restaurants to the left, the outdoor bar, entertainment, sports bar and disco to te right it wasn't loud, it was buzzing with excitement, activity and everyone was smiling. I loved the Mexican feel of the resort, the quaint, greenery covered pathways and a 5 min walk or 2 minute shuttle to the beach was a great way to burn off the excellent food at the buffet. The resort was so close to downtown playa del Carmen and 5th avenue which were great walking and cheap taxi. The beach was fantastic. Well groomed and the sea weed problem was very well taken care of. Not a big deal because we are so lucky to swim in the ocean on a warm day in January! The nexxus tour guide was fantastic. We worked with Alejandra and she suited us to all of our excursions. The only thing we did not enjoy was the coffee. Lucky that there was a Starbucks right around the corner from the entrance. And the resort cat was there to greet us every day!! This resort is reasonably priced, jairus our trip central agent paired us well to this location and we couldn't be happier (even with two solid days of rain-go to rio secreto and xel ha). Go!!

Room service was good food was ok got sick on the last night from it. Front desk was not very helpful. Pools were nice! Lots of walking but beach was nice ten minute walk from resort to the beach. Very clean

We travelled to this resort December 28-January 4/16. This was are second time here in 4 years. I have stayed at the viva azeteca in Playacar as well. And also have stayed at the Bahia in akumel as well as many other resorts in the Dominican Cuba and puerta Vallarta. The food is the best I have had anywhere. The buffet is the best. Al le cartes are ok but don't compare to the buffet. The rooms are clean spotless yes a little bit dated but nothing like Cuba rooms. The grounds are emaculate. So lush beautifully kept. Great location you can walk bike or taxi into playa Del Carmen. Very safe area to be out in. Playacar is a gated comunity. All in all it was a great holiday and I would foresure return. Like this resort better than the other Riui resorts. This is like a mexican hacienda the others like Vegas. We will be back some day.

The resort is fabulous. Starting from when you first arrive, you'll notice RIU tequila's unique lobby. The villa style rooms, the layout of the resort and the customer service received there are all fantastic. Playacar is a very safe district with gated security. A must go for the much needed mid winter rest and relaxation.

No major complains. Beach has lots of sea weeds this year. Came to Iberostar 3 years ago beach was awesome. Other than that it is strong 4 star hotel. Majority tourists speak Spanish. Don’t go to city especially to big malls like for example Walmart. You will be targeted by salesmen who sell excursions in a very aggressive way. Hide you bracelet somehow.

Beach is good, but far away. You have use your feet. Walking way to the beach is 1km approx. The sea water is dirty. No shadow on the beach. The service is excellent. A lots of music shows and other entertainments. Overall, it was a good vacation for 7 days.

We stayed at the Riu Tequila May 9th to 16th. My husband and I travelled with out 15 and 19 year old children. I must say that the resort exceeded our expectations on many levels. I was worried there may not be enough activities for the teenagers to do, but the entertainment throughout the day kept them busy. The entertainment staff should get a huge pat on the back for their knack at engaging everyone in the activities. They played a huge part in making our trip memorable. The food was excellent. We never got tired of it because there was so much variety. The list goes on of everything we enjoyed. Riu Tequila has it all figured out and we will definitely be back some day!

Hotel was nice. Pool could be better but use if other facilities is a plus. The beach was amazing. The food was great lots of variety buy could use more variety in the drink menus. Entertainment and music very good to.

Large pools, many activities, great service and AMAZING restaurants! Good entertainment, nice staff, relaxing spa right on site. Every restaurant offered a variety of really good dishes. Bars were a little cheap with the alcohol

This hotel is everything you want, it's amazing! Not one bad thing to say about this place. The food, the drinks, the staff And it is ery clean. Would go back in a heartbeat!!! Excellent resort!! We loved it!

Rooms are very Clean and good service on site , Lots of good selection for the food, but no Italian Restaurant on site. Please note that they need to have sharper knifes for the BBQ night at the Buffet.

Clean, efficient resort with charming Mexican decor. It has great food, attentive staff and good overall value. It is co-located with a few other Riu resorts where you have limited use of facilities. The pool area is somewhat small and not very deep but is fine if you just want to cool down after lounging in the sun for a while. The beach is probably 400 to 500 metres away, which means a hike of 10 mins or more. This was a bit of a stretch for senior citizens like ourselves. Although, there is a small golf cart "trolly" to ferry people back and forth at selected times during the day we never used it once over a 9 day stay because it never seemed to fit our schedule. One irritant for us was the WIFI set up which only allowed access for 90 continuous minutes once a day in the (at times) very noisy lobby. This was very inconvenient, so to keep contact with our family we many times had to walk minutes down the street and sit outside the Starbuck to use there WIFI signal.. In contrast the Riu Playacar and Riu Yucatan which were close by allowed their guests 24 hour WIFI from several areas on their property

The RIU Tequila is one of several RIU resorts in the area and while it is not the most grandiose compared to others, at least if feels like you are still in Mexico. The Tequila was exceptionally clean, the staff very friendly, the food excellent and the pool area with adjoining dining very nice. It is a good value also as you pay a bit less because it is a 5 minute walk to the beach or 2 minutes by shuttle but no big deal. We also liked that there were guest privileges at 2 beachfront RIU resorts for breakfast and lunch and bar service. Our first time in the area but if we go back, it will be to the Tequila.

My husband and I went there for our honeymoon in November. There was a little mix up from our booking and they didn't know it was our honeymoon though. Our first room ended up being by the street and so we had headlights shining in our room. We asked to be moved and they accommodated us right away. The food was amazing but at ter 2 weeks it gets a little boring as it does everywhere.. but you can always find something no matter what. We didn't spend much time ON the resort as the beach was a 5 minute walk down a pathway away and we preferred beach to pool. It was nice because we could still eat and drink at the beach using Riu Yucatan. The only small complaint is that the staff really enjoy tipping and will cater to your every need IF you tip them. But when you're there for 2 weeks you can't tip the whole time. So by the end we were slightly ignored mostly in the restaurant Jalisco. Our maid also would only make you 2 towel animals before she would expect a tip. Still we loved the resort and the front desk people were absolutely amazing so we would definitely go back.

Having stayed in many resort hotels over the years, this is the best that we have come across so far. The rooms were spotless, the facilities were excellent, and the food was phenomenal. The variety and quality were outstanding. The nightly entertainment too was excellent. When we stayed there, the occupancy rate was 100%. The maximum number of guests is 1,800,. The staff total was 335. If there is one drawback, it is located a 10 minutes walk from the beach, but this is made up for by the many pluses. The hotel does provide a shuttle service. This hotel is scheduled to be renovated in about three years. Some of the nearby other Rius have already had a makeover, and the results are terrible.All metal and glass. This hotel has thus far retained its Mexican spirit. MAY IT NEVER LOSE THAT SPIRIT!

This is the place that I will recommend to my friends too. We had some problems with the toilet and they fix it right away. The food was excellent , a big selection to choose.Great place ! I will go again!

The staff were always helpful and constantly smiling. The food was always good and well varied. The lobby bar staff treated us like friends and paid attention to the details. It was sometimes hard to locate beach chairs. The grounds were always kept clean.

The beach is what stands out in my mind from first impressions upon arrival. Check in was very quick . Next stop to our room which was clean with 2 beds pushed together with a shower , no bathtub, flatscreen T.V. bathroom does not give privacy. No coffee maker in room. Buffet for the first night was excellent with many choices, clean, great Mexican atmosphere, good service. There is no buffet open for lunch, its by the pool. A disappointment. We did not go to the a la cartes, did not want to be tied down with times. There is only 3 to choose from. Most of the entertaintment was very good. When at the beach we went to get a drink and where told you can,t come here to have one you have to go over there. Lunch buffet at Yucatan are open to heat and food not that good. We had a later departure and they wanted 60 us dollars to keep our room for 3 hours. We declined and had to carry our money and passport around with us . I would go back if there was a great deal otherwise there are better resorts in the area for what they charge. . It was a nice trip but we are used to an air conditioned buffet for lunch, for what we paid that is to be expected. No room service, no pool or beach service.

This resort was excellent the grounds, beach, food and hospitality was exceptional. The staff very friendly. The only small negative would be the dimly lit entrance way to your rooms in the daytime. Overall we will return to this resort.
