10 Last-Minute Fall Colour Getaways You Can Still Catch This Year

10 Last-Minute Fall Colour Getaways You Can Still Catch This Year

Blink and you’ll miss it. Fall colour season moves fast, and the window for those fiery reds and golds is shorter than you think. The good news? You don’t need months of planning to catch it. Whether you have a long weekend or a full week, these 10 getaways still have colour to give. Some are a short drive from home. Others are a quick flight south, where peak season runs well into November. Pack a sweater, grab your camera, and let’s go leaf peeping.

We’ve ordered these by timing, so the ones fading first come first. Go now, or go later. Either way, you’ll catch the colour.

Mont-Tremblant, Quebec

Peak: late September to around October 10

This is your Thanksgiving weekend pick. The Laurentians put on one of the earliest shows in Quebec, with hillsides of red maple framing a pedestrian village straight out of a postcard.

Don’t miss: the panoramic gondola to the summit for views over the whole valley.

Charlevoix, Quebec

Peak: October 1 to 15

Mountains meet the St. Lawrence here, and fall is when it really shows off. Think winding coastal roads, cozy inns and farm-to-table everything.

Don’t miss: a scenic drive along Route 362 between Baie-Saint-Paul and La Malbaie.

Muskoka and Haliburton, Ontario

Peak: the first two weeks of October

Cottage country at its best. Lakes reflect the colour back at you, and the summer crowds are long gone.

Don’t miss: the Dorset Lookout Tower, with views over a sea of treetops.

Cabot Trail, Nova Scotia

Peak: early to mid-October

One of the most scenic drives in the world, and fall is its moment. Highland forests blaze red and gold right down to the Atlantic.

Don’t miss: the Skyline Trail at sunset, plus live music at the Celtic Colours International Festival if your dates line up.

Eastern Townships, Quebec

Peak: October 5 to 20

Rolling hills, covered bridges and vineyards make this the coziest fall drive in Quebec. It’s also one of the best options right now.

Don’t miss: a tasting stop along the Brome-Missisquoi wine route, then a hike up Mont Orford.

Seoul and Seoraksan, South Korea

Peak: around October 20 at Seoraksan, early to mid-November in Seoul

Golden ginkgo tunnels, red maples around royal palaces and mountain temples wrapped in colour. Korea’s season runs late, so there’s still time to book this month.

Don’t miss: the Changdeokgung Secret Garden in Seoul, then a day trip to Seoraksan National Park.

Bruce Peninsula, Ontario

Peak: the second and third weeks of October

Turquoise water, limestone cliffs and fall colour, with fewer crowds than Algonquin.

Don’t miss: the Lion’s Head lookout on the Bruce Trail.

Hudson Valley, New York

Peak: mid-October to early November

Art, apple orchards and riverside towns, all wrapped in autumn colour. Easy to pair with a few days in New York City.

Don’t miss: Storm King Art Center, where giant sculptures sit among the fall foliage.

Niagara, Ontario

Peak: late October to early November

Missed the early colour up north? Niagara is one of the last places in Ontario to turn. Bonus: wine harvest season.

Don’t miss: a slow drive along the Niagara Parkway, with a winery stop or two in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Kyoto, Japan

Peak: the second half of November into early December

Not quite last-minute, but if you can book this month, it’s worth it. Temple gardens glow red and gold, and some light up at night.

Don’t miss: Tofukuji, Eikando and Arashiyama.

How to book a last-minute fall getaway

  1. Follow the colour south. Missed the peak up north? Head to Niagara, the Hudson Valley or the Smokies, where colour lasts into November.
  2. Check the fall colour reports. Ontario Parks and Quebec’s regional tourism sites post weekly updates during the season.
  3. Pack layers. Frosty mornings, warm afternoons. A light jacket and a sweater cover most days.
  4. Book flights and hotels together. A flight and hotel package can save time (and money) when you’re planning on short notice.
