A Barcelona city break of 7 to 10 nights is the most common Spain package from Montreal, and the seasonal nonstop flight makes it particularly convenient. The next most popular option is Barcelona + Madrid, which is easily done by high-speed train in about 2.5 hours. For a two-week trip, many Montreal travellers add Seville or Granada for a taste of Andalusia, including the Alhambra in Granada and the historic cathedral quarter in Seville. Summer beach extensions to Mallorca or the Costa Brava are also available.
Where to stay (examples)
- Barcelona: Gothic Quarter/El Born (historic centre, most walkable area), Eixample (grid neighbourhood, near Sagrada Familia), Barceloneta (beach access), Gracia (residential and local-feeling)
- Madrid: Sol/Centro (central, near the major museums and Retiro Park), Salamanca (upscale, good restaurants), La Latina (historic neighbourhood), Malasana/Chueca (lively, younger crowd)
- Seville: Santa Cruz (near the Alcazar and cathedral), Triana (local neighbourhood across the Guadalquivir), Centro (main square area)
- Granada: Albaicin (historic Moorish quarter, views of the Alhambra), Centro (near the main square and covered market)
Weather and when to go from Montreal
Montreal travellers often find May, June and September to be the best months for Spain. In Barcelona, May and June bring temperatures of 20 to 26C with comfortable evenings, and the city is active without the full summer crowds. September keeps similar temperatures while adding warmer sea conditions. Madrid is comfortable in spring and fall but should be approached with care in July and August when heat can exceed 38C. The Balearic Islands are excellent from June through October for beach-focused trips.
