| 3 | VIENNA - LJUBLJANA Our route takes us southwards through Styria's forested mountains and into the 'sunshine state' of Carinthia - a favourite holiday destination since the time of the Hapsburgs. We drive along Europe's warmest lake, the Worthersee and stop in the resort of Velden. Now it's only a short drive across the border and on to the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana. Hotel: Lev. (B) |
| 4 | LJUBLJANA - ZAGREB This morning a local guide will show us the Baroque elegance of the 'White City'. First we ascend the hill to the imposing medieval castle for splendid scenic views. We also see the City Hall, grand squares, the Triple Bridge and Cathedral of St Nicholas, patron saint to the fishermen of Ljubljana. Now free time for a romantic stroll along the Sava River or perhaps a little shopping, before we depart this afternoon for Zagreb. Hotel: Dubrovnik/Arcotel Allegra.(B) |
| 5 | ZAGREB - PLITVICE On our guided tour of Zagreb, we see Roosevelt Square and the attractive facades of Ban Josip Jelacic Square. Just around the corner lies the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Now to the medieval core of the Upper Town, including the Presidential Palace, Stone Gate, St Marks Church and the Pope's Tower. Free time to explore before we depart for the fortress town of Karlovac on the River Kupa. Tonight we stay in one of Europe's natural wonders - Plitvice National Park. Hotel: Jezero. (B,D) |
| 6 | PLITVICE SIGHTSEEING Cameras at the ready as we explore the crystal blue-green beauty of the Plitvice Lakes; a scenic wonderland of 16 inter-connecting lakes flanked by thundering waterfalls and primeval forest. We visit Korana Canyon to see the 230 feet high falls and Tomicevo Pogledalo for spectacular panoramic views over the park. (B,D) |
| 7 | PLITVICE - SPLIT After breakfast we cross Krka National Park to visit Trogir, founded by the Greeks in 400BC. We admire the Romanesque cathedral and Renaissance Cipiko Palace before continuing to the historic port of Split. 1700 years ago the Roman Emperor Diocletian built his palace here. Today those very buildings make up the historic heart of the old town. Listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO, we explore the historical buildings and labyrinth of streets built within the walls of Diocletian's Palace. Then time to relax along the palm lined, Marshal Tito water-front promenade! Hotel: Marjan. (B) |
| 8 | SPLIT - CAVTAT Today we visit the ancient Roman port of Salona. Here we admire the 2nd century Amphitheatre, Roman Baths and vast Necropolis. Then it's on to our resort hotel, beautifully situated on a peninsula overlooking the Adriatic and the picturesque old city of Cavtat. | 9 | DUBROVNIK SIGHTSEEING Our guided sightseeing tour in the old town this morning explores the stone paved streets inside the 16th century bastions. We see Onofrio's fountain and the Rector's Palace, the awesome city walls, as well as the Franciscan and Dominican monasteries. This afternoon is at leisure. (B) |
| 10 | CAVTAT AT LEISURE According to George Bernard Shaw - 'Those who seek Paradise on earth should come to Dubrovnik!' So today is completely free to shop for handicrafts in the bazaar, sample local fish delicacies or just relax in Paradise...! (B) |
| 11 | CAVTAT - ZADAR Today a magnificent drive takes us along the Dalmatian coast, a scenic symphony affording panoramic vistas of sparkling deep blue sea, studded with rocky islands. We stop in the medieval port of Sibenik, with its fine merchant houses, palaces and superb Cathedral of St James. Finally we reach seaside Zadar, contested over the centuries by the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Ottomans, Austrians and French - but now it's a peaceful resort! Hotel: Kolovare. (B,D) |
| 12 | ZADAR - VENICE We continue along the sunny Dalmatian Riviera, through sun drenched Adriatic resorts and charming fishing villages to briefly cross into Slovenia. Now we head into Italy and follow the coast to Venice. Tonight we stay on the Lido, one of the most fashionable resorts on the Adriatic!Hotel: Biasutti. (B,D) |
| 13 | VENICE SIGHTSEEING Venice - a living treasure! Appreciate her splendour as we cruise by private launch to St Mark's Square. Once, one of the greatest trading centres of the world, the city's wealth and power is evidenced by the riches of St Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace and its adjoining Bridge of Sighs. We also visit a glass showroom for a demonstration of traditional craftsmanship, unchanged for centuries. Now we relax on a highlight gondola ride through the romantic canals and under ancient stone bridges. Later, don't miss the chance to try the delicious seafood, freshly caught in the lagoon! (B) |
| 14 | VENICE - VIENNA We leave the Adriatic coastline today, driving through the spectacular Italian Alps beneath towering cliffs alongside mountain streams. We cross into Austria and make our way back to Vienna. This evening, we enjoy a highlight dinner. Hotel: De France. (B,HD) |
