Overnight flight to Milan.
2MILAN AT LEISURE
Complimentary transfers depart Malpensa Airport at 09.00 and 12.30 to your tour hotel. This afternoon we tour elegant Milan with its Gothic Cathedral, dominating the central Piazza and the famous La Scala Opera House. Later, there's time to shop or explore. Tonight, join your Tour Director and fellow passengers for a Welcome Drink, followed by a highlight dinner in a local restaurant. Hotel: Star Hotel Ritz. (HD)
3MILAN - ST MORITZ
We bid farewell to the economic capital of Italy, and make our way into the enchanting Italian Lake District. Here we visit lakeside Como, then head northwards to the mountains of Switzerland. We ascend the Maloja Pass to reach the renowned ski resort of St Moritz, fashionable with the jet set!Hotel: Crystal. (BB,D)
4ST MORITZ - VENICE
We leave the mountains this morning and head south to the great northern plain of Italy. We pause in medieval Verona, setting of Shakespeare's 'Romeo & Juliet', where we walk with our Tour Director to see Juliet's balcony and the imposing first century Roman arena. Soon we arrive in the magical city of Venice. Tonight we settle into our historic hotel, situated on the Grand Canal. Hotel: Principe. (BB)
5VENICE SIGHTSEEING
What better way to see Venice than from our own private launch? Relax and listen to the informative commentary as we cruise past palaces and churches to alight at St Mark's Square. First, we admire the famous Bridge of Sighs that connects the Doge's Palace to the prisons. It was from here that Casanova made his daring escape! Around the corner lies the belltower and Byzantine Basilica, adorned with dazzling mosaics. Then we watch the world's most treasured glass being made in a demonstration of Venetian glass-blowing. Now we enjoy a highlight ride along the Venetian canals on one of this floating city's famous gondolas.This afternoon, why not take a boat to one of the islands for a delicious seafood lunch? (BB,D)
6VENICE - TUSCANY
With ample time, we are able to take a route to Florence many visitors to Europe would never have the chance to experience. We skirt the Venetian Lagoon, past fishing villages such as Chioggia, as our journey takes us south along the Adriatic coast. We cross two of Italy's most important rivers, the Adige and Po, before approaching the city of Ravenna. Here we stop to visit the Church of St Apollinaris in Classe with its dazzling ancient mosaics. This afternoon the scenery changes dramatically as we enjoy a scenic drive into the Apennine Mountains, to the Tuscan spa resort of Montecatini for our two night stay. Hotel: Francia & Quirinale. 7FLORENCE SIGHTSEEING
This morning we drive to the Tuscan capital, Florence, where our day begins with a specialist guided tour of the Academy Gallery to admire Michelangelo's original Statue of David - a truly incredible sight! Now we experience the city's other unique treasures. At the Duomo, Florence's famous cathedral, we see Giotto's belltower and the Baptistery, adorned with Ghiberti's 'Gates of Paradise'. The buildings form an eye catching array of white, green and pink marble, which displays the traditions of Florentine art from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. We then continue to the political heart of Renaissance Florence, the Piazza della Signoria, and also visit Santa Croce Basilica, where Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Rossini and Galileo are all buried. After a demonstration of Florentine leatherwork, there is leisure time to shop for local specialities or perhaps continue sightseeing in the famous Uffizi Gallery? Tonight, why not try a Tuscan feast accompanied by Chianti wine? (BB)
8TUSCANY - NICE
This morning we leave Montecatini and make our way down the beautiful Arno valley, towards the Mediterranean coast. First stop is the city of Pisa where we visit the Field of Miracles, aptly named as, in the centre, stands a most famous sight, the Leaning Tower of Pisa. There is time for a unique photo, to admire the stunning Baptistery and Cathedral, and shop for marble souvenirs. Then we follow the Mediterranean coast past the marble quarries of Carrara to Genoa, birthplace of Christopher Columbus, and on to the border between France and Italy. Now we follow the magnificent coastline to the magical city of Nice, often referred to as the 'Queen of the Riviera'. We stay here for two nights.Hotel: Radisson SAS. (BB)
9MONACO EXCURSION
This morning we take take the corniche road to Monaco. We see the Grimaldi Palace and the cathedral where Princess Grace lies buried, before taking a drive on the Grand Prix circuit, and seeing the famous Monte Carlo Casino. Then it's a short drive to the hill-top town of Eze, with stunning views of the sea and coast. We also visit one of France's oldest perfumeries before returning to Nice. The rest of the day is at leisure to enjoy our exotic location on the Riviera. (BB)
10MONACO- ITALIAN LAKES
Today we follow the pleasant 'Highway of Flowers' back into Italy. From the coast we take a scenic drive north into the Maritime Alps, to arrive in the Italian Lake District. This fairyland of vivid blue waters at the foot of dramatic mountains, has always been a favourite haunt of artists and travellers. Our overnight stay is at the resort town of Baveno, on the shores of Lake Maggiore. Hotel: Splendid. (BB,D)
11ITALIAN LAKES - Return
Our tour concludes with a transfer to Milan Airport this morning. (BB)
