| 3 | PARIS - BEAUNE We head into Champagne and the ancient capital of the county, Troyes. Its magnificent centre of medieval buildings is appropriately shaped like a champagne cork! Now in to the province of Burgundy, famous for its fine wines. On our way to Beaune, our home for two nights, we stop in the world famous wine village of Chablis. Despite its fame, the village retains a quiet atmosphere and we have a chance to taste the local nectar. Hotel: Mercure Beaune Centre. (BB,D) |
| 4 | VéZELAY EXCURSION Today we see some of the beautiful Burgundian countryside with road signs that read like a wine list. We drive to the picturesque town of Vézelay, built along a rocky ridge among the northern Morvan foothills and famous for its wonderful basilica. From here, Richard the Lionheart set off for the Crusades. Then we return to Beaune for a highlight visit of the Hôtel Dieu with its stunning multi-coloured tiled roof. (BB) |
| 5 | BEAUNE - CHAMONIX We head towards the Maconnais and Beaujolais before turning to the East and ascending the Alps. A scenic symphony awaits as we head into the mountains and climb towards the fashionable ski resort of Chamonix, also known as France's mountaineering capital. Hotel: Les Aiglons. (BB,D) |
| 6 | CHAMONIX - GRENOBLE This morning we take a breathtaking drive to the lake-side town of Annecy. There's time here to perhaps have lunch in the Little Venice area or take a boat trip? Finally it's off to our hotel in Grenoble, proud capital of the Dauphiné region. Hotel: Grand Hotel President. (BB,D) |
| 7 | GRENOBLE - NICE Today we travel in the footsteps of Napoleon as he made his victorious return from Elba. It's a scenic, rugged landscape of precipitous gorges and swift rivers that leads from the Alps, down towards the Mediterranean coast. Following part of the route of the Monte Carlo Rally we head to Nice, Queen of the Riviera, and one of France's oldest cities on the Côte d'Azur. We check in to our hotel for the next two nights. | 8 | NICE AT LEISURE On this morning's sightseeing tour, we journey to the pocket sized Principality of Monaco. We see the Grimaldi Palace, then visit the cathedral, burial place of Princess Grace and other Monegasque Royals. We then enjoy a drive on the Grand Prix circuit and views of the busy port with its luxury yachts. The rest of the day is at leisure to enjoy the French Riviera. This evening, why not enjoy an optional dinner of local specialties? (BB) |
| 9 | NICE - AVIGNON This morning we visit the medieval town of St Paul de Vence, sitting high above the Riviera beaches. We have time to explore before driving through Provence to Cézanne's home town of Aix-en-Provence. This afternoon we continue into the Luberon, made famous by Peter Mayle. We pass Bonnieux, La Coste and Cavaillon en route to our hotel in Avignon which was once the Popes' capital. Hotel: Mercure Cité des Papes. (BB) |
| 10 | RHôNE EXCURSION First we admire perhaps the greatest legacy of the Romans' presence; the aqueduct called the Pont du Gard. Then we head towards the Rhône river and Châteauneuf du Pape, where we taste some of the wine. This afternoon, back in Avignon, we take a little train ride for an overview of the town and then there's time to relax, visit the Papal Palace, or dance on the 'Bridge'? Later, maybe visit an olive mill to see how olive oil is produced? (BB) |
| 11 | AVIGNON - MONTPELLIER We witness another side of Provence as we travel to Arles. Van Gogh lived and painted in this Roman City and we visit the amphitheatre before driving through the wild lakelands of the Camargue. We pass Vaccares, Le Grau du Roi and stop in Stes Maries-de-la-Mer where the gypsies gather annually to honour their patron saint. You may see flamingos and wild white horses on the way to our hotel in Montpellier. Hotel: Holiday Inn. (BB) |
| 12 | MONTPELLIER - TOULOUSE After breakfast we cross the Languedoc to visit medieval Carcassonne. Here we enjoy a walking tour of this walled city with its fairytale turrets, used for the film 'Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves'. Now we continue to the thriving commercial city of Toulouse for our overnight stay. Hotel: Holiday Inn Centre. (BB,D) |
| 13 | TOULOUSE - BRIVE LA GAILLARDE We stop in Cahors famous for its 'Black Wine' before heading to Rocamadour. A resting place for pilgrims on their way to Spain, the town is perched on the cliff side above the Alzou river. There's time to explore this beautiful medieval town and its sanctuary, before heading on for our two night stay in nearby Brive la Gaillarde. Hotel: La Truffe Noire. (BB,D) |
| 14 | DORDOGNE VALLEY EXCURSION This morning's drive takes us into the stunning Valley of the Dordogne where we visit the town of Sarlat-la-Canéda with its fine historic golden limestone houses. Now we make our way to the prehistoric site at Lascaux. After viewing the world famous cave paintings we return to Brive La Gaillarde where tonight, we enjoy a magnificent highlight dinner of local specialities. (BB,HD) |
| 15 | BRIVE LA GAILLARDE - PARIS Our first stop today is at the town of Limoges, where we visit a porcelain showroom. Then on to historic Poitiers to board our TGV train for the fast and comfortable journey to glittering Paris. Hotel: Sofitel Forum Rive Gauche. (BB) |
| 16 | PARIS SIGHTSEEING With our local guide we see the splendid Notre Dame Cathedral in the oldest part of the city - the Île de la Cité. Now we drive past the facades of the Louvre and the luxury shops of the Champs Élysées to admire the Arc de Triomphe. We also stop for a photo of the Eiffel Tower. Now we see the landmarks from a different perspective as we enjoy a cruise along the River Seine. Our tour concludes with a visit to Napoleon's Tomb in the Église du Dôme.
