| Day # | Description |
Arrive Phoenix Arrive into Phoenix by 5.00pm and transfer by hotel shuttle bus to your hotel near the airport. The remainder of your day is at leisure.
Phoenix - San Carlos This morning we join the group to depart for Mexico with an early morning pick up at our hotel. We also make a stop in Tucson for passengers joining the tour. We will be crossing the border at Nogales and arriving into Magdalena for a brief stroll through the square to view Father Kino's Mausoleum. After lunch, our journey takes us to Hermosillo to see the Cathedral and the murals at the Government Palace. This evening, we arrive by sunset into San Carlos Bay, where the desert meets the sea, the Sea of Cortez. Our hotel is a deluxe oceanfront resort, fronting Algodones Beach, meaning 'cotton beach' for the purity of its white sand! Dinner is served at our hotel. (AB L D)
San Carlos - Alamos An experience in ecotourism, we visit a cactus garden for an interpretation of the desert fauna and flora, followed by a private yacht excursion in search of exotic sealife. We enjoy lunch overlooking the Sea of Cortez, then we travel through the ^breadbasket^ of Mexico, the region of the so-called ^green revolution^ near Obregon City, where man has turned the desert into a garden. We reach the foothills of the Sierra where the road ends at Alamos, Mexico's northernmost colonial city, a national monument for the preservation of its architecture and Spanish heritage. We enjoy dinner and a folkloric show tonight. (AB L D)
Alamos - El Fuerte A native guide takes you along the fascinating cobblestone streets to visit some restored baronial mansions, dating back to the day when Alamos' silver mines were the richest in the Americas. Along the way, the storytelling includes many 'boom and bust' episodes, as well as the tales of ghosts. Alamos is known as a national landmark, and the site of a renowned annual music festival. We'll also meet the Mayo Indians and learn how they have preserved their identity, language, culture and customs. After lunch, transition to the ^thorn forest^, where the desert meets the tropics of Sinaloa. We continue through Mexico's largest agricultural valley, arriving in El Fuerte de Montesclaros, founded in 1564, on the banks of the river that bears the same name. Our hotel is the former residence of colonial-time church and political authorities, truly a living museum! (AB L D)
El Fuerte - Copper Canyon (2) Today we board our private rail car at 7.30am and embark on the most spectacular train ride in North America, the 'train ride in the sky'. Albert Kimsey Owens conceived the idea in the 1880's, the utopic dream of an American trader to link the Midwest and the Sea of Cortez for the China trade. The dream took nearly 100 years to realize, given the difficulties of the terrain to conquer. Through 86 tunnels and over 39 trestles, the train must elevate itself from sea level to 7,000 feet in less than 150 miles. This breathtaking journey along precipitous Septentrion Canyon ends at Temoris, site of the line's dedication in 1963. Here, by engineering ingenuity, the train ascends by ^loops^ to the mountaintop, from the Tropics to the Alps almost instantaneously. We are now entering the country of the Tarahumaras. Next to the Najavo Nation, this tribe is the second largest tribe of native Americans. We arrive at Posada Barrancas by mid-afternoon, and are transferred to our hotel. (AB L D)
Copper Canyon Area Our day will be dedicated to the grandiose scenery of this landscape, four times larger than the Grand Canyon, a complex of seven canyons with the generic name of ^Copper Canyon^, in places so deep that it surpasses the ^Grand^! What adds to the experience is to meet the semi-nomadic, cave-dwelling Tarahumaras, expert farmers. Later, enjoy time on your own perhaps to take an optional helicopter ride. (AB L D)
Copper Canyon - Casas Grandes After breakfast this morning, we transfer to Creel via Oteros Canyon. We will enjoy lunch en route, and then descend from the high elevations of the 'Barrancas del Cobre' into the Chihuahuan Desert and the city of Casas Grandes for the night. This evening, we will get together with our fellow traveling companions for a farewell dinner. (AB L) (HD)
Casas Grandes - Phoenix Paquime is Mexico's northernmost archeological site, the ghost of the great Chichimeca civilization, an original ^trading post^ between the desert cultures to the North, and the advanced civilizations of MesaAmerica in Southern Mexico and Central America. The well-preserved adobe apartment houses and ceremonial truncated pyramids are a silent tribute to a truly great human legacy. After our visit to Paquime, we leave the Casas Grandes area and travel through Chihuahua before re-entering the United States. We make a stop in Tucson , for passengers leaving the tour, and on to Phoenix, arriving at our hotel in the early evening. (AB L)
Depart Phoenix After breakfast, your morning is free until hotel check-out time. A departure transfer to Phoenix Airport will be available by hotel shuttle bus. (AB)|Please note: This itinerary has been designed to bring the best scenic views and local sights together in one tour. You will discover breathtaking vistas and encounter the fascinating representatives of ancient cultures. Knowing what to expect will assist you in preparing for this tour, and will ultimately make this a very enjoyable and memorable vacation. It is important to realize that the Copper Canyon is still remote and rustic. The tour will reach some very high elevations. Some of the accommodations and services encountered on this tour are rather basic by American standards. Entree choices at mealtimes may not be as extensive but they will be quite adequate. Facilities, especially in the remoter areas, are limited. This tour is best enjoyed by the experienced traveler in reasonably good health who can take it in good humor if not all of the 'comforts of home' are readily available. Sometimes, the train schedule and other parts of the itinerary may be subject to delays or variation due to circumstances beyond your hosts' control.
