Nassau, Bahamas

Long a popular destination for North Americans, Nassau gets better and better as each year passes. From a primitive island in the early sixties, it is now a cosmopolitan sun destination for even the most discriminating traveller. Two main beach developments grace the island of New Providence: Cable Beach, and Paradise Island. The original development at Cable Beach is closest to the airport, and on the main island. Resorts are built tightly along a small stretch of beautiful beach, about a fifteen-minute transfer from the airport. The resorts are quite large in comparison to the size of the beach, particularly the Radisson Cable Beach and the Nassau Marriott. In full season, these beaches are quite busy. The casinos in these hotels dominate the activity in this area, and other nightlife is available at the small strip of hotels along this stretch - an easy walk. A short cab ride takes you into downtown Nassau, where an abundance of shopping choices await on Bay street, from the straw market to the upscale boutiques and duty free shops. The street is busy, especially when large cruise ships are in port.

Paradise Island is connected by a twin causeway, and a water taxi service. It is possible to walk across the bridge, but few do, opting instead for a short cab ride. The beach on Paradise Island is much wider and longer, but there is quite a slope from the resort areas down to the water. This island was home to the Paradise Island Resort and Casino, formerly owned by Merv Griffin, which has now been transformed into Atlantis - a theme hotel built on Vegas proportions. This amazing resort contains a massive aquarium, impressive grounds, and a stunning lobby and public rooms. In fact, it is a tourist destination in and of itself. A range of good quality hotels line Paradise Island, but little else exists but manicured gardens and new condo developments. If you haven't been in a few years, you must return to see this amazing destination. It remains a popular three or four night getaway, as it offers something for everyone.
